Catch it early, I said. Avoid the worst of it, I said.
Thought I'd dodged the bullet when WG brought home the flu for my birthday.

Clever and wise, I opted to stay home in the early stages. Then, the thinking went, I would not get as severely, horribly sick. I had a live example in WG to convince me that this was a plague to be avoided. He moaned in his sleep. I still haven't forgotten last year's flu.

How well did my plan work?

    Guess.

It might have been the miserable damp weather yesterday. I should have taken the car rather than stand in the rain at the bus stop.

Oh, what a lovely infestation I have.
Oh, wonderful. I tried downloading the latest SPN episode from mininova.org and got a virus infected file instead.

    Threat name: Trojan.Downloader.NUS
Threat level: somwhere between Kristallnacht and nuclear holocaust

Bonus? Looks like it blocks me from going to the mininova.org web page. I can't warn anyone. Except you, of course.

Currently cleaning it out with Spywaredoctor. Next I run AVG.

    S2 Layout Issues
Hi, Guys. I know a good many of the S2 themes are kinda hosed right now. Something changed with the LJ migration to their new data center. The Bloggish and Style Contest themes have their CSS hosted at LJ. That's by LJ's design, with how the code is distributed. The code is set to use LJ's CSS proxy to handle the access and display of the CSS settings. Since LJ's move, though, the CSS proxy has been kaput. But the CSS itself at LJ is still working. Until we can find a way around all this, a couple users have a way that you can use the Custom CSS in your customization area to get your layouts pretty damn close to the original for that layout and theme.

You'll enter two sets of code in that area. The first one would be the code from this URL:
    http://stat.livejournal.com/sixhtml/themes/common/base-weblog.css

Just go there, copy it, and paste into the custom CSS box.

And the second set you enter will be from the direct CSS URL for your specific theme. You can locate this URL by viewing the source of your journal in your browser (View Source code). If you scroll down to the <link rel="stylesheet" section of the source code, you'll see the direct url to your theme's CSS at livejournal. Go there, copy that code, and paste it after the base-weblog.css code above. Make sure you have "No" selected to use the included base code (it's a dropdown), and that the URL field above the custom CSS box is empty. Click to save changes, and your theme will display much as it is supposed to. There is occasionally an element like a border that doesn't come through, but it's pretty close. As an example of the CSS URLs, this is the one for the Baby theme for the Bloggish layout: http://stat.livejournal.com/sixhtml/themes/lilia/theme-baby.css The CSS URLS will be start with http://stat.livejournal.com/sixhtml with the rest varying by theme and layout. I'll still be looking for an alternative to having to futz with custom CSS, but in the meantime, that method of applying the CSS will get your Bloggish and Style Contest journal themes put back together pretty well. Thanks, Robin

    Meme and Links
    Screencap meme snagged from [info]luna_k:
    + stop what you're doing.
+ print screen of your current desktop - my desktop, I have had this wallpaper since..wow...like April maybe. I did recently give it a pink/purple 'wash' though.
+ if you have last.fm open, print screen - last.fm profile page
+ if you have a music player open, print screen - iTunes
+ pick a folder, open it, print screen - my bandom picture folder. :D

Live "Furby" Found in Indonesia - actually a pygmy tarsier, but dude it totally looks like a furby. I imagine they're far less annoying though. :)

iSerenity Ambient Sounds Offer Soothing Background Noise - I really like the Roaring Ocean one.

How Axl Rose Spent All That Time - NYT Review, unsurprisingly not glowing. I liked this part of the article:
“Chinese Democracy” sounds like a loud last gasp from the reign of the indulged pop star: the kind of musician whose blockbuster early success could once assure loyal audiences, bountiful royalties, escalating ambitions and dangerously open-ended deadlines. The leaner, leakier 21st-century recording business is far less likely to nurture such erratic perfectionists. (snip) The new rock paradigm, a throwback to the 1950s and early 1960s, is to record faster, more cheaply and more often, then head out on tour before the next YouTube sensation distracts potential fans.

I've been thinking something along those lines for awhile now. I personally think that the superstar nonsense lead to all the crap music of the 90s. I'd rather see a return to working musicians. But that's me.

    Back to beta-ing!

And the banana peel award goes to....
A banana in my backpack plus large, heavy books = not a good idea.

    Who knew?

If people wrote fanfic about my life, well, these would be the sort of deep, meaningful lessons I learn. I like to think that John Sheppard does stupid things like this all the time, and only once he's with Rodney does anyone find out that, yes, John will put his shoes directly in front of the door and then trip over them.

There must be fic. Entitled "Could Have Been In Mensa."

Archive News, and my, that sounds official

In other, less squishy, news: I'm uploading my fic to the beta version of AAOOO (An Archive Of Our Own).

The tagging feature, when carefully thought out, is very, very cool. It will make finding exactly what you want so much easier.

For example, I have 18 stories uploaded so far.

If you remember a story that involves, say, sex toys, you go to my page, click Tags off to the right there, and then click the "sex toy" filter.

"Sex toy" brings up two stories, Bacchanalian Circuit (SGA) and Lost in the Temple of Law (SPN).

Now if you want to read someone else's "sex toy" centric fics, you click on the tag "sex toy." That brings up my two stories, plus two by Kass.

    Nifty.

Let me know if my tags work for you. This is to save you trouble later on, make it easy for you to find what you want, and help create a base of solid, (correctly spelled!), carefully considered tags for everyone.

    Oooh, shiney!
Sure, you could use this interface to do all sorts of important things with like DNA or complex scientific whatevers. But me? I'd totally use this to reorganize my iTunes library. Holy christ is that shit out of control and it would be SO much easier to fix if I could just move the files around by hand.

    SGA Fic: Out Of Bounds - John/Rodney - NC-17
I'm slipping this scene in, although it actually happens earlier than the stuff with John's costume.

You can get caught up here: Out Of Bounds.

    Title: Out Of Bounds
    Author: Icarus
    Rating: NC-17
    Pairing: John/Rodney
Summary: There was no telling what ham-fisted third-rate crackpot Elizabeth would enlist as Melanie's new coach.
A/N: Thank you to my intrepid and playful betas, [info]rabidfan and [info]roaringmice.
Previously in Out Of Bounds: Known more for his jumps than his artistry, figure skater John Sheppard hires ex-skating champion and "artiste" Rodney McKay to be his coach. Their teasing friendship warms into something more. Rodney also coaches Elizabeth Weir's nine-year-old daughter, Melanie. After a run-in with Rodney's "no crying" policy, Elizabeth asked John if he'd be interested in coaching. John said no. Unequivocably. And unfortunately, complained to Rodney.

Happy birthday to me... happy birthday to me....

WG has a pressie for me -- the flu!

I'm staying home, drinking juice, and hoping I can cut this off at the pass. But somehow I'm perfectly happy. I guess that's because WG's home too. And even though he's sick, he's here. And that makes me purr.

Ooo! Time to get him more hot tea.

Happy birthday to me... happy birthday to me....

Icenetwork.com speaking, please how may we ignore you?
Icenetwork.com has absolutely dreadful customer service.

Why am I signed up with these jokers again? Oh, yeah, right. I want to watch the Regionals and Sectionals.

If anyone can give me a better option to watch these lower eschelon competitions, I will drop Icenetwork.com in a heartbeat. Any ideas?

    Archive Testing, 1... 2... 3...
An Archive Of Our Own is in a testing phase. To help facilitate this, I am slowly uploading fics there and assiduously providing feedback on what works, what doesn't.

Hopefully my suggestions are helpful and not too redundant.

Please let the archive know if you note any problems:

    Tanlines & Dogtags

First Signs Of Magic: Hermione Granger

    A Moment Of Sin

My question for you is on tagging.

What would you like to see in tags so you can find what you want to read? What makes a good tag? How general should I be? How specific? How much should I customize tags to the content of the story? Is there such thing as "over-tagging"?

This is in your interest. If I tag badly, it will make it difficult for you to find what you want.

It also helps me, so thank you all very much in advance.

The incredible untouchable fly: fun for the whole family.
The plus side of the monitor not working (and having to use the TV instead) -- kitty loves it. He's watching the incredible uncatchable fly --

(what we know as a cursor and/or mouse pointer)

    -- with utter fascination now.

This means that he stands in front of the screen, backlit, as he tilts his head to stare. Which means I have to look between his little pointy ears to see the screen.

Of course I move the mouse around until he bats at it. Who would pass on the opportunity?

For once, the whole family gets to enjoy TV. *g*

(Although he likes figure skating, too.)

    Well, then...
Guess I don't have to decide whether or not to continue watching My Own Worst Enemy. (NBC Axes Worst Enemy)

That right there is why people aren't watching television as much anymore. What's the point of investing in a show when you aren't given a chance to get involved before the network decides to axe the program?

My Own Worst Enemy had potential. Sure I thought Henry was a whiney fucking tool, but the potential was still there. But NBC pulled the plug. Knight Rider, however, gets a second chance despite abysmal ratings. *sigh*

Merlin Flashfic and status of internet reduction.
    Yay!

    [info]merlin_flashfic is up and running!

In other news, my internet reduction is working fairly well. It's been, um, four weeks now. Huh. Really? Wow. The house is cleaner, I'm cooking more, and both WG and Monte seem much happier.

    The rules that have worked:
    • No computer in the am before school. A struggle sometimes when I'm waiting for a beta on Out Of Bounds, but a very smart move. Net gain: fewer missed buses; relaxed, peaceful mornings; breakfast is consumed.

    • Once I'm home, no computer until after 7pm. This makes me antsy, especially when WG's not home, but it clears a block of time where I do things to relax that aren't computer related. Net gain: when WG's home we have "couple time" to chat about our day; newspaper is read; cat is petted; I am cooking again.

The rule that did not work:
    • At least one day per week where the computer is off (ahahahahahahah). Yeah, right.

The rules that work extremely well when I remember to do them:
    • Do not turn on computer until I have a to-do list. Really, it works great, because I usually get online for a reason and then... whoosh!

    • Shut tabs immediately when I'm done with them. Amazing how I'll come back to the same tab again and again just because I forgot why it's open. Tremendous time waster.

The wordcount added to Out Of Bounds since I've started the new rules: ~9,000.

Dont' forget, [info]wish_list is open for business!
    Hi, guys!

Sorry that I haven't been around much, my lupus has really been kicking my butt the last couple of weeks. Add to that still needing to take care of mom every day and my energy levels haven't had very much left over to get me through the day. I'm feeling a little better though, my doc upped my meds again so hopefully that will help.

What this post is for is to remind everyone that Wish List is sitting there just waiting for this year's Wish Lists. It's time to get started on spreading some holiday cheer around. Especially this year when so many of us had had such hard years. We need to start making those extra smiles.

Please feel free to pimp the comm anywhere you want to. The more people we have participating, the more chances we have to do nice things for one another. :)
