Ganguro catching on in Britain? BBC: Japan's fashion rebellion goes West By Nina Robinson BBC World Service, London An underground youth culture in Japan which makes a rebellious fashion statement against traditional rules on eastern beauty, is taking hold on Britain's youth.
Manba involves devotees wearing dark tans, white make-up around their eyes and hair that is often a combination of neon colours.
British teenagers like 18-year-olds Eilish and Declan got caught up in manba after an interest in Japanese culture led them to start researching on the internet, where they came across the style. Seriously, this is one Japanese fashion trend that I didn't think would take off elsewhere. Last I checked, it wasn't even that common among cosplayers in the U.S., unlike Gothic Lolita, which has a small but dedicated following. Or maybe I'm wrong. Her social networks are important as she has friends in Japan and the US who are also into the style. ... "There are also some in America. I'm quite good friends with some of the girls who do it in America." Looks like I am wrong. In any event, it seems that the ganguro gals (and at least one guy--Declan) in the UK appreciate the irony inherent in their fashion choice. "We're Western girls trying to be Japanese girls, trying to be Western - it seems like a funny circle to go around." I can't top that. There are also two videos that go with the report. Author feud! There seems to be a writer's feud on Twitter. Now, this isn't a for-reals feud, but rather a bunch of writers who have decided to call each other names on Twitter for the amusement of others. It starts when John Green decides he wants to have a writer's feud. People suggest writers, ranging the gamut of quality from Neil Gaiman to Cassie Cla(i)re (who makes an amusingly ironic comment here. Ultimately, however, Maureen Johnson (no connection to the character from Rent) fires the first shot, despite John's stated wish earlier not to "feud" with her again. Follower counts are compared. Awards are whipped out and dismissed (though I will admit that Johnson's American covers do have unfortunate implications). There's even a comment about making John cry, as well as a commentary on John's hair. Justine Larbalestier decides to get in on the feuding action, bringing fandom_wank star Cassie Cla(i)re in with her. "Real" names are revealed. Jellyfish are ordered (for Johnson's bathtub). Jennifer Lynn Barnes takes sides with Johnson. Johnson attempts to drag Neil Gaiman in on it, but he declines, letting off what is perhaps the best insult in the whole thing. As of now, Green, who one could say started this fight (and managed to put in a good flamewar on a BlogTV show earlier today), seems to have forgotten about the whole thing. And they say Twitter is useless. Well, it probably is, and these people would be writing (or perhaps making YouTube videos in Green's case or plagiarizing in Cla(i)re's) were it not for this tremendous waste of time. ETA: Another postworthy burn. |

Let's Play I'm not sure how many people are familiar with the concept of Let's Plays but I've become addicted to them. Pretty much its someone playing a game and offering commentary on it. Blind runs are popular as well especially on horror survival games like Silent Hill. Those of you that are familiar with them do you have any favorites? Or a let's play you'd recommend to someone who'd just discovered the concept? On a minor note I've started doing LP's myself. I just finished King's Quest 3 VGA remake, and plan to start on KotR I. But I'd like to line up some games to play after that or if I run into issues with KotR, so do you guys have any suggestion? Please keep it to PC games, or games with emulators. And if any of you have tips or comments about my first attempt please let me know. :) |

You are hereby banished from the Kingdom of Squee Over the course of the recent warnings controversy, I kept seeing phrases like: "As an exiled BNF myself..." "I was forced to leave fandom years ago..." "...she was kicked out of fandom..." ...and this isn't the first time I've heard it.
I've been active in various fandoms for about 15 years now and I still don't understand the concept of being "kicked out"; nor have I seen such a thing occur.
What does it even mean? You get a court order to stop cosplaying or writing fanfic? The postal service intercepts your zine submissions? Ninjas come in the night and steal all your DVDs? I'm utterly bewildered. It seems awfully vague, not to mention unenforceable. |

Still not over Ugh. So, a federal judge in California has tentatively overturned Lori Drew's conviction in the MySpace Suicide case. ( For the link phobic )I kinda understand the judge's hesitancy, but it always sits wrong with me when judges overturn jury verdicts. (I know there are legitimate reasons to, it's just a personal thing.) I just don't like the fact that this woman pushed an already fragile teenager past the brink and might be walking away without even a slap on the wrist. Current Mood: Bitter |

I remember those good old days. I was twelve years old, and I thought everyone's internet opinion was serious business. I got my panties in a tight wad whenever someone dissed that one character I obsessed over. Then, I would proceed to declare internet war and make big essays about why no one should say mean things about my favorite character ever.
Really though, why do people care so much? It's a fictional character. That character is a figment of some creative author's imagination. It's not anyone's mom or something. Sure, people's reasoning behind things can be dumb, but let's face it: they'll get lives in a couple of years. Wankers usually do. Okay, not all of them, but still! I love Cassie Ainsworth from Skins. I have this girl crush on her, but I'm not gonna get all pissed the hell of if someone on the internet called her a stupid bitchy whore. Really? I'm too busy keeping chicks off my real life man to care about some fictional character's e-reputation.

You're standing on my neck. TV Shows on DVD reports that an upcoming DVD release has an ad for Daria DVDs in 2010! I'm so excited! I still have a bunch of videos from when The N would air edited episodes. Also (might as well consolidate my posts y/y?), does anyone have an idea as to where I can find people to fill up my San Diego Comic-Con hotel room? (I already tried the unofficial LJ comm and Facebook.) |

Rewriting DH so Snape Saves the Day! oryx_leucoryx rambles on about Snape, ded from snake, and the Elder Wand. It actually read rather reasonably IMO, but the part that made me guffaw was this: Harry arrives at Hogwarts to search for the Ravenclaw Horcrux, Voldemort prepares for attack on the school as in canon, except he does not attack Severus. Severus escapes so as not to have to fight the teachers nor open the school to Voldemort and sees Nagini under protection. He sends the doe Patronus to call Harry to an encounter where he tells him all, including Harry's status as Horcrux, Harry explains to Severus about the other Horcruxes and where they stand. Harry and friends take care of the cup and diadem, while Severus remains hidden. Then Harry and Severus have to tackle Harry, Nagini and Voldemort. I think their best chance is if Harry goes to offer himself with Severus accompanying him disillusioned, or perhaps Severus brings Harry as his 'prisoner'. (Perhaps it would have helped to have more support, but with only Ron and Hermione knowing anything about Horcruxes I can't imagine Harry and Severus being able to convince anyone else that Harry's voluntary death isn't the result of another act of treachery by Severus. I doubt Ron could be convinced, and I can't see Harry involving Hermione but not Ron. At most Harry would tell friends about Nagini.) Once again, Snape gets elevated to co-author of Voldemort's destruction. Note how oryx_leucoryx completely glosses over a great deal of arguing, stress and tension in that little 'tells him all' part. *rolls eyes* And get a load of the "Nagini bites Harry and Sevvie rushes in to save the day" Option 2. *rolls eyes again* And if you read the peanut gallery, you see the usual wailing and gnashing of teeth beginning to happen as they rail against his "cheesy death". |

It took them two years to figure this out? Jeff Sukkasem is a U.S. citizen and legal resident of Montgomery County, with a passport, a library card and a volunteer job at a local Thai Buddhist temple. For the past two years, however, he essentially has been barred from public school.
Jeff, 14, has not set foot in a classroom since March 2007, when he left his mother and sister in the Bangkok suburbs and flew to the United States to live with family friends. The soft-spoken teen, a native of California, said he is here to resume his American life. But school officials regarded him as a visitor, sent to an affluent Washington suburb to attend its superior public schools. They said he would have to pay to do so.
