The lower floor of the lab is dark and cool, free from the constantly-shifting colors of the crystal above. He knows he's not supposed to go be down here, but sometimes it gets to be too much up there. The others don't understand, fixing him with wide, blank eyes when he tries to explain that he gets headaches, that the ever-present whispers of the lost souls aren't soothing to him, they hurt. There's a lot the others don't understand.

He creeps across the floor, bare feet shuffling over cold stone. There's something different down here today, something that makes the shadows jump and twist in a way that keeps his eyes darting from side to side just in case. His tail flicks back and forth as he walks, the tip twitching nervously. He can see something just around the corner, a faint, pulsing light. It's one of the tubes, he realizes--one of the weird machines that Garland stores the Genomes in while he's working on them. If he tries really hard, he can remember what it was like to be in one. But the memories of liquid sliding over his skin and clear walls closing in on him makes him shiver, so he tries not to think about it as he draws nearer.

There's a new Genome inside. He knows it's new because all the other numbers are outside, drifting aimlessly like they always do. The faint phosphorescent glow of the tube illuminates a round face, eyes shut and lips parted ever so slightly like the Genome's just sleeping. He doesn't know what makes him step forward and press his hands against the glass, but there's something about the boy. On the surface, he looks like any other Genome, short blond hair and brown tail and pinkish skin. Maybe it's because it's down here all alone, like it's not part of a normal batch. Or maybe it's the weird tugging feeling he gets from somewhere inside his chest, but he can tell. This one's special, like him.

Kuja rests his cheek against the cool glass, a dreamy smile spreading over his face. "You can be my brother," he whispers.
