Hugo swallowed dryly, eyes flickering from one corner of the tent to another. The entrance was to his back--he could probably get out, but there'd be nowhere to run to. He'd be caught eventually. Maybe Caesar could come up with something--

But no. Caesar was too busy proving that he was either a better actor than he'd ever shown himself to be on stage, or had the survival instincts of a drunk lemming. "You wanted to see us?" he was saying, leaning easily against one of the poles supporting the tent.

Lucia's smile was dangerous. "Yes, I did. I'm glad you came, boys."

"About what?" Caesar asked with a yawn. "Could you make it quick, maybe? I was in the middle of a nap."

"You're always in the middle of a nap," Hugo muttered under his breath.

"Oh, no, it won't take long at all." Lucia waved a hand dismissively. "I'd told you before that I don't have any issues with your relationship. That hasn't changed. There's only one problem--grandchildren."

Belatedly, Caesar seemed to realize the dangers of the conversation. "...uh," he managed, his face paling.

"Mom," Hugo yelped.

Lucia ignored both of them, continuing on as though neither had spoken. "I expect Hugo to take the leadership of the clan from me at some point, and he'll therefore eventually need an heir." She paused to throw a sharp glance at her son, who was slowly trying to back out of the tent, dragging Caesar with him. He froze. "Fortunately, we have a solution to this."

"Hugo," Caesar hissed, beginning to look slightly panicked himself, "what is she talking about?"

"I don't k--oh. Oh no."

"What do you mean, 'oh no'?!"

"He means," Lucia said, holding out a small box, "that I have something for you, Caesar."

Hugo was looking positively frantic. "Mom, I really don't think--"

She opened the box. Caesar had just enough time to glimpse what looked like a rune, before there was a bright flash of light and a strange burning sensation on his hand.

"Enjoy your new True Rune," Lucia said.
