[FIC] Kingdom Hearts

Sometimes, when he thinks the others aren't looking, Demyx leaves the castle and goes into the city. He climbs to the top of one of the tallest buildings he can find, one with a flat roof and high railings where the near-constant rain has caused puddles to flow together and form a shallow pond. Once he's there, he strips off the long leather coat that he kind of hates because of its boring color, tossing it and his boots carelessly into a corner. The water feels good as it sloshes over his feet, and he wiggles his toes to cause tiny ripples like miniature waves. The rain slicks his hair down onto his skull, uneven dirty-blond strands that would get into his eyes if he left them open. But they're closed, clenched tightly shut because if he doesn't look, the rain spattering his bare shoulders and trickling over his chest in little rivers feels like ocean currents and he can almost taste the salt. He sings softly, making up songs as he goes along by weaving together half-remembered snatches of melodies that aren't meant to be sung in the open air.

Xigbar finds him up there one day. He stands off to one side, watching him sway to the music only he can hear, and waits to be noticed. When he is, instead of the blushing panic he expects, Demyx laughs delightedly and grabs the older Nobody's hands. A snappy comment dies half-formed on Xigbar's lips as he's pulled to the center of the roof and asked to dance. He doesn't have the heart to say no, and as he stares into sea-green eyes, he wonders how it is that someone with no heart can seem so happy.

"Nononono," Demyx says, swatting Xigbar's hands away. "You're doing it wrong."

Xigbar raises an eyebrow, his one good eye giving Demyx a look. One that's probably more effective when his hair isn't falling into his face, he realizes belatedly. "The hell, kid. There's no wrong way to make a ponytail."

"Sure there is," the kid insists from his perch on the bed, legs swinging like a suger-hyped kid's as he leans forward earnestly. "And you're doing it. Lemme do it for you, so you don't look like such a dork." He pats the space next to him, grinning brightly and far too innocently for someone tossing insults out casually like that.

"Uh-huh. 'Cause you're an expert on not looking dorky," Xigbar grumbles, but obediently sits down on the bed next to him, because, hey, why not? "And what're you doing in my room, anyway? You piss someone off again and need somewhere to hide? This place ain't freakin' holy ground, you know. You can't ask for sanctuary here."

Demyx shakes his head, pulling off his gloves with his teeth, careless of any marks it might leave on the leather. "Nah. I was just waiting for you to get back, that's all." He slides his bare fingers through the grey-streaked length of Xigbar's hair, deftly working out any tangles he comes across. His expression is intent, his tongue sticking out slightly between his teeth. It's oddly cute, and makes him look even younger than usual. When he's finally satisfied, he doesn't pull away--instead, he continues stroking his hair, winding a strand around a finger. "Is it raining out there? Your hair's damp."

"Huh?" It takes Xigbar a moment to process the question, distracted by the soothing motions of Demyx's hands. He hardly ever takes his hair out of its tie, and he'd forgotten how good this could feel. Not like he's gonna let the boy know that, though. "Yeah. Damn weather. You gonna do your magical ponytail tricks, or what?"

"Shut up. I like playing with your hair." Demyx flushes, deep pink staining his pale cheeks. "...plusIkindamissedyouandthisisnicesoshutup."

It's a good thing Xigbar's used to translating Demyx-babble, or that last bit would have been totally incomprehensible. As it is, he blinks, noting how the boy's hands aren't moving anymore and he's ducked his head and, hey, that blush really looks good on him. "Huh," he manages, none too intelligently. He tries again. "Well, uh, I sort of missed you, too. Damn quiet without you, kid."

That must have been the right answer, because the next thing he knows, Demyx is using his hair as leverage to awkwardly press their lips together. It's not exactly the best kiss he's ever had, all wet mouth and hesitant tongue, but he's not exactly complaining. There's a lot to be said for enthusiasm, and damn if Demyx isn't enthusiastic. The kid's hands are doing something in his hair and then the kiss is over, far too soon for Xigbar's liking. The smile on Demyx's face more than makes up for it, though--he looks like Christmas's come early for him, and he's just got the present he wanted but never expected. And, okay, the kiss must've affected him more than he though if he's coming up with metaphors like that.

Then Demyx falls off the bed laughing, and he realizes that while he was distracted, his hair was put into pigtails. "Oh, now you're askin' for it." Xigbar launches himself at the smaller form with a growl, and Demyx shrieks through his gasping laughter. And if during their impromptu wrestling match their lips find each other again, so what? It's no one's business but their own.

Demyx ran his hands down his front, rubbing his palms over the gradual shift from soft human skin to the thicker, rubbery flesh of his tail. The slick slide of his hands and the currents of water that followed them felt unbelievably good--it had been too long since he’d been in anything close to his original form. He hummed happily, flipping onto his back and just floating as he explored this new body through touch. It wasn’t exactly the same--the fin was a slightly different shape, the color slightly darker, but it was close enough.

A ripple nearby caught his attention. Instinctively, he kicked, twisting around and making a blind grab. Faintly-webbed fingers closed around a silvery-scaled fish, holding tight. Demyx brought the wriggling fish up to his face, grinning brightly. “You’re lucky I don’t have to eat anymore,” he told it before releasing his hold. The fish darted off erratically, disappearing into a clump of seaweed to the sound of his laughter.

Doing a somersault, he dragged his hands through the water, carefully coaxing it into thin streams that twirled and dipped better than any Dancer he’d ever commanded. They slowly gathered around him, fondly ruffling his hair as they flowed over his skin in gentle caresses. With a soft sigh, he threw his head back as the indistinct touch shifted form into watery hands. Stretching, he smiled at the nearly-invisible shapes of his water clones as they circled him. “Come on,” he said. “We’ve got a job to do.”
