[FIC] Kingdom Hearts
Title: N/A
Fandom: Kingdom Hearts
Pairing: N/A (Sora and Riku)
Rating: G
Word Count: 530 words

Sora stared out at the sea, heels drumming the old wooden fence he was perched on. It was a hot, sticky day, heavy with humidity despite the clear skies above. His school pants were rolled up past his knees, the top buttons of his shirt undone, and he was still roasting. Which was funny, when he thought about it--he'd been to tropical jungles and barren deserts, and the late summer weather at home still somehow managed to bother him. When the fence swayed under him with a creak, he didn't even look up. "Hey, Riku."

"Skipping school? On our second day back? Man, what kind of bad habits did you pick up while we were gone?"

"Says the guy who's out here with me," Sora said, stretching his arms over his head lazily.

Riku shrugged. "Never said I was any better."

For a few minutes, there was nothing but the sound of the waves and the ever-present low hum of the cicedas.

"It doesn't feel right," Sora said softly, at long last.

"Yeah, I know." The older boy sighed, taking an elastic band out of his pocket and pulling his long hair into a ponytail up off his neck.

"I mean, it's like no one even noticed we were gone. And even if they did, I don't think they'd get it. Everyone's so caught up in the little things that they don't even care that there are other worlds are out there."

"Yeah," Riku said again, a hint of sadness in his voice.

And Sora realized that this was how Riku had felt in the first place, way back when they were building the raft. He frowned. "Why are we even back here, anyway?"

Riku gave him a weird look. "Uh, because Kairi's here?"

"Well, duh." Sora rolled his eyes, leaning a bit closer and flicking him in the shoulder. "That's not what I meant. Why can't we just go somewhere else? Bring Kairi with us. We could travel all over." His eyes lit up. "Oh! I could introduce you guys to everyone! Leon and everyone would love to meet you! Well, um, okay, you probably couldn't tell with Leon, but I'm sure he would. And--"

"...Sora."

"--and Ariel, and Hercules, and Belle--though I guess you already met her, with the whole kidnapping the princesses thing, but I don't think she'll hold it against you--"

"Sora."

"--oooh, we could even go see Simba and see what kind of animals you..." Sora trailed off, blinking. "Um, what?"

"You really want to leave all this behind?" Riku's expression was unreadable.

Sora hesitated, then nodded. "Yeah. We could always come back and visit, right?"

A smile broke out over Riku's face, one of his rare real ones that were getting more common, but still not common enough, in Sora's opinion. "...yeah, we could. So, when do we leave?"

"As soon as we convince Kairi?"

"Heh. Sounds like a plan." He vaulted off the fence, ruffling Sora's hair until it stood up in even more ridiculous spikes than usual. "Race you back to her!"

"Hey, no fair!" Sora called, starting off after him.

They were gone by the end of the week.
