Hugo buries his face in his pillow, inhaling deeply. It smells like cotton and spices and smoke, but most importantly, it doesn't smell anything like swamp. Outside the tent, he can still hear the fire going. A log cracks in the heat, followed by a low rumble of laughter from the hunters surrounding it and recounting the stories of the day's catch.
With a sigh, he rolls over onto his side. "It's weird to be back," he says.
Caesar gives him a look from the other bedroll. "I thought you were excited about it."
"I am! It's just... weird," Hugo finishes lamely. He wishes he could blame his word choice on the fact that he's speaking a language he's rustier at than he'd like to admit after nearly a year and a half of taking automatic translation for granted, but the truth is, he doesn't think he knows the correct word for what he's feeling in any language. And speaking this one means he doesn't have to correct Caesar's accent.
"Don't tell me you'd rather be back." Caesar's tone is light, but his eyes are a dark and serious green in the flickering light of the small, indoor fire. "I, for one, am glad to be rid of the zombies."
There's a photo album sitting at the head of Hugo's bedroll, along with the rest of the possessions he's not quite sure what to do with. Kazumi's handywork. But he doesn't have to look at it before answering. "...no. I'm glad I'm home."
He leans forward to press his lips to Caesar's. It's a small, chaste kiss, but it's familiar, and that's what matters. "...I'm glad we're home," he amends.
Caesar makes a noise that might be a laugh or a sigh of exasperation. It's hard to tell.
What's not so hard to interpret is the sound he makes when Hugo pauses, and says: "Hey, wait a minute. We don't have to worry about the no sex rule anymore."
