O hai, a drabble Was glancing through my journal from the past couple of months, and I found this, which was supposed to begin a story that didn't end up existing. And since it stands well enough on its own, here it is. Fandom: PotC Title: Fait Accompli Rating: PG Pairing: J/E Summary: Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results, and Jack, of course, is ever so sane. A moment One of several moments from AWE that broke my heart a little lot. A little late for TLAPD, but I wrote it two months ago, if that counts. Do I even have to say "angst"? It's begun Posting this from the King Hall law library (on break--we get three hours of free time this week and we don't have any big reading assignments yet.) I'm really enjoying taking advantage of the UC Davis wireless internet, and getting to use my laptop to take notes in class. Our profs have repeatedly scolded us about using the internet while in class, which I admit to doing a couple times briefly--for good cause only, as I'm still trying to iron out housing issues. But I prefer not to, because honestly, who has time to do that and why? What's being discussed in class is way more interesting than surfing the web. And that's me, the information addict, saying that!
I'm really having the time of my life so far. Intro Week, of course, is not Real Law School yet--lots of orientation stuff, an Intro to Law course, minimal reading. But the Intro to Law class basically gives us just a little taste of various subjects we'll be studying later on, and I absolutely love it. The profs are not at all boring. My classmates are nice, articulate, intelligent people--some of them intimidatingly so, but I appreciate that too, as it's stimulating--and excited about the same things I am. We've had some great alumni guest speakers who've given us advice and pep talks, and really gotten me excited about the practice as well as the study of law. In fact, I have no complaints except that my backpack is freaking heavy these days and I don't even have my reading assignments for fall yet.
I truly feel like I'm in the right place, and that is a huge relief. My stress levels have actually gone way down since Monday morning, rather than the other way around.
Oh, and I know someone here! My former roommate Becka is now my classmate! We had no idea prior to Sunday night when we saw each other at the intro barbeque. Extra coolness.

Happy Lovecraft's Birthday! …”It’s All Right,” said Eeyore, looking into the dark waters again. “This Sort of Thing was Bound to Happen. Just a question of the Stars being Right, I suppose.”
“I mean,” he continued, as the surface of the water was torn asunder and a mass of hideous, churning flesh rose into view, “what else was I supposed to Expect?”
“There’s Rabbit,” he said, as the blasphemous mouth of the being from the depths opened in a scream. “He’s Energetic, Rabbit is, but he will Meddle in the Forbidden Arts. And then there’s Owl. Owl is very intelligent, but I’m afraid that in some of the older and more unsettling texts in his house he may have seen things that have driven him into shrill unreasoning madness. And then there’s Tigger. No earthly creature could possibly Bounce quite so much as Tigger.” Via cleolinda and Making Light, where the commenters do this kind of literary mash-up all the time, but not always to such delightful effect. Along similar lines: The Great Old Pumpkin. "I committed everything I knew to memory, burned all my papers, and embroidered my most unfathomable and precious secrets in near-invisible thread on my security blanket, which as you can see, I carry still." In other news, scientists are developing artificial life and a time machine. Sadly, the theoretical time machine can only be used to travel back in time to after the machine was built. I'm holding out for a TARDIS in the classic blue. Current Mood: amused | | Thursday, August 16th, 2007 | | 2:04 am |
Heil healthcare! Anyone see TDS/TCR tonight? Jon was pissed off during his interviewer with the Cheney biographer (Hayes) and the audience was right there with him. I love it when he gets all passionate and serious. Rawr. Also, the "Spoiler alert--Voldemort wins!" line was FTW. And THEN...Stephen Colbert and Markos Moulitsas! What, did someone declare it Alt Media Heroes Night on Comedy Central or something? The resultant squee may have woken my poor roommates upstairs. TCR's really been championing and publicizing Daily Kos since O'Reilly started targeting DKos as a "hate site." Stephen runs the url with giant arrows: "Don't go to this site!" Bang, Kos's server gets hammered with hits. I'm always interested to see the overlap between what Colbert and Olbermann cover and what's been featured on the DKos front page. Somehow I don't think I'm the only one getting my breaking news in orange. Is it too cheesy to say that these guys give me hope for my country even when I'm at my most pessimistic? Because they really, really do. What's sad, though, is that sometimes I catch myself being shocked at what they are still allowed to say, even as comedians. (For extraordinary instance, if you missed Colbert's keynote speech at last year's White House Correspondents Dinner--like I did at the time--hie thee to Youtube and watch it ASAP. The man has balls of steel. Notice how everyone in the audience is scared to laugh. I don't know how they managed to get him in there, but I imagine the behinds-the-scenes fallout was something else. It is incredible stuff...although the best part may be seeing the First Lady's lips form the words "fuck off" as she declines to shake his hand.) Craving a little UNreality You know, it's really frustrating to have all this kind-of free time (less free than I hoped, but more free than I'll be in a week) and not be able to write AT ALL. And have all these WIPs staring me in the face. Bottom line, AWE really did kill my inspiration when it came to PotC. I'd hoped that this would pass, but there's just nothing I'm really excited about exploring there. Other people are writing wonderful post-trilogy fic, but I don't feel like I have much to add. There's no drive to finish the snippets I do have. The characters aren't "talking" to me anymore. I can't quite care enough, I suppose. There's a lot of reasons for this, many of which I've discussed before--the conclusion of the story and character arcs, the direction of the franchise, the recent wankiness of the fandom, the untrustworthiness of LJ, being busy in RL, etc. No need to go into all that in depth here. But it makes me sad. Like the end of a love affair. The honeymoon over, the bloom off the rose, whatever. A good bit more bitter than sweet. I don't have any fandom to replace it either. Which is probably a good thing, because my obsession du jour really needs to be school for the next ten months, but I miss it. Especially since my creativity in general has ebbed with my fannish interest. (And maybe I'll come back to Pirates...I have again and again for what, four years now? I'm certainly still reading PotC fic written or recced by the authors on my flist, and reading sparrabeth, of course. But I've filtered all the comms off my default list, and I don't miss them at all.) Argh. I have EIGHT voicemails right now, which makes me feel overwhelmed even though I'm sure some of them are actually from people I want to hear from. So instead of dealing with them I am going to pretend that my phone does not exist and go watch Serenity. Or Season Three of Buffy. I haven't decided. Something Jossverse. And maybe read over bits of Deathly Hallows so I've got a chance of having something for tephroliah when she comes back from camp. *desperate attempts to rekindle fannish joy of any kind* Current Mood: apathetic |
