Is there a Thing in academic SPN fandom that explains the super hostile reaction to this comment? Because I don't understand why "They don't need to use the language of rape with the female characters ... because they use the imagery" = "Suggesting that the imagery of Ruby's death is more problematic than Zachariah's torturous attempted coercion of Dean" unless there's more background there. And then the less hostile but still oddly cold response to this comment.

It's interesting that in writing about angel-possession and demon-possession the writers felt compelled to draw a distinction between them, although perhaps not as much of a distinction as they had hoped. Sure, the demon-possession is analagous to rape, no question. But the consent to angel-possession, as you noted, is dubious. Is consent under extreme duress much better than nonconsensual possession? What if Nick (subtle name--NOT) had simply been driven around the bend and still refused possession? Would he simply be killed, or end up killing himself to escape the horrific images being used to coerce him? If Jimmy had resisted would he have been subjected to progressively more aggressive pressure to accept until he either killed himself or capitulated? Would killing himself even work at all if angels can resurrect people? (No escape FOR YOU. /soup nazi)

In other words, neither technique is exactly laudable. Coercion is just a hair's breadth from nonconsensual invasion. When the coercion has become extreme enough it seems that any distinction between the two techniques has effectively evaporated.

Srsly I have no opinion on the matter at all. I'm just wondering if there's some sort of common wank in the meta side of SPN fandom that makes people go 'FUCK OFF, DERAILER'.
