First, he knocked at the door. Thrice; and smiled at the opening door. He asked if he might talk to Kasumi Karen-san, please, and was let through.

He left his shoes at the threshold.

Karen smiled when he bowed in front of her. There were faint wrinkles around her eyes from the smile and the tension underneath it, but the make-up was impeccable despite her red eyes. He wondered if she wept flames too.

Nataku-chan wanted you to have this, he said, handing her the plush bear.

She stared at it for a while. Why ?

He shrugged.

He didn’t mention innocence and betrayal. No such outrage to be uttered when they were both prostitutes. But they knew the value of one caring gesture.

After a while, she offered tea. It glinted under the light, like fire, like gold. The bitter taste was priceless.
