Popping in from The Land Without Internets* to tell you very important things about media conglomerates:

- EMI has dropped Graham. This is better for him in the long run (see: Radiohead and lots of other artists who are bypassing labels so as to not get ripped off by them), but this means that his new album isn't going to be released any time soon. :( I hope eventually he re-releases his back catalogue under his own power, because--

- Fuck EMI. They get no money from me ever again.

- The US postal service are a bunch of useless assholes. This isn't really news, but FFS, when someone sends a package certified mail (meaning it requires a signature), you'd think it would actually get to me.

- I will have DSL in a few days (provided the software they're sending me actually works with Windows 98 >.>). I was very amused at AT&T's attempts to squeeze an extra $5 out of me by a) not telling me about their Basic plan and b) half-assedly trying to convince me that I need the next one up. NAH!

- Beware of YouTube. I don't know if they're actually going to hand over all those usernames and IP addresses, but it seems the media conglomerates are going to get their money from you, even if they have to shake you down in the street to do it.

So I was in Target yesterday and they had a kitty collar in the clearance area. I figured, for $2.50 I'll buy a silly collar with fish skeletons printed on it and a little bell (I abstained from buying the rainbow one, lest my cat assume I was taking jabs at his sexual orientation). I just now got around to putting it on him and it is driving him nuts. He doesn't like collars/harnesses anyway, and now every time he moves the bell jingles, which confuses him, because he has jingly ball cat toys. So he keeps looking for a toy to bat at and then flipping out. It's hilarious. It is also just punishment for his new favourite hobby of knocking over the waterer I bought him.

At least when he comes to murder me in the night, I'll hear him coming. :D

Did not sleep well at all last night. No time for a nap. Must eat before work. Must do writing at work. Must finish novel. Must print and send out stories. Must stop spacing out every five minutes.

Everything feels slightly unreal when you haven't had enough sleep. Feeling is not entirely unpleasant.

LJ elections made of fail and lolz. On a mostly unrelated note, I hope that cambler catches crotch rot of the worst and most incurable variety. What a sleazeball.

I was poking through some old photos on my hard drive and came across pictures of my cat as a kitten.

He has always been a rambunctious kitty.

Well, maybe "rambunctious" isn't quite the right word.

Actually, I think "psycho homicidal jungle cat" is a more accurate description.

He used to hit his head on stuff. A lot.

I always have to spell that word really slowly because I want to type A-N-E-Y for some reason.

So today I had the dubious pleasure of giving my manager 30-60 minutes of icy silence after he referred to Third Eye Blind et al as "faggot music." I was not aware until today that I could singlehandedly drop the temperature of a room several degrees, but apparently that is my superpower. What bothers me the most, I think (aside from the fact that that sort of casual homophobia is the mark of an undeveloped mind), is that while I certainly don't want to be BFFs with him, I genuinely didn't think he was the sort of person who made with the gay slurs so casually. And of course, when he finally figured out that I'd been giving him the invisible dogpile of shunning, I got the But I Didn't Mean It Like That™ song and dance. They never do, do they? Fortunately, I think I embarrassed him enough to make him think twice about saying that sort of thing again. I think he has some serious issues with women and gender and sexuality (how many straight guys don't?), which is a pity, because he's reasonably intelligent.

I don't know why I continue to be surprised when people do things like that. I think I may have to turn in my cynic card if I keep it up.

I'm enjoying the lolz this trial is giving me, knowing that Aardvark is going to get his ass handed to him and then quite possibly get sued by the publisher that he's more than happy to sell out.

What I am not enjoying is the misogynist bias in just about everything the media has to say about it. Steve looks like a schoolboy? What the actual fuck? I'm trying to tell myself that it's all about creating as sensationalist a story as they can, and an extremely rich author suing a fan over something like this is just begging for a David and Goliath angle, but jesus fucking christ. Jo cries, so the bitch is obviously faking it for sympathy. Steve cries, and awww, don't you just feel bad for him? Fuck you very much, journalists, and way to undermine any credibility you might have had-- not that the NYT has much credibility at all anymore, after its OWN scandals. Maybe that's why they're so sympathetic to Stevie: they don't have any integrity either.

Mostly though, I'm just goddamn sick of misogyny and patriarchy everywhere I look. Of course that evil whore doesn't deserve to protect her copyright: she's a woman, so if she had any sense, she'd step back and let the big, smart, completely un-fucking-qualified man write it. She's stepped out of place, she doesn't need that money, and she should get her ass back into the kitchen. After all, she was asking for it.

All this is aside from the fact that SVA is a typical entitled middle-age douchebag adulterer who dumped his family to run off with a younger woman and try to ride someone else's coattails to fame and fortune. I hope the contemptible bastard is unemployable the rest of his life, because it's exactly what he deserves. Yes, I am angry. Patriarchy and institutionalised misogyny are always going to piss me off, especially when they involve painting a weasel like this as some kind of sympathetic character.

Wow, I just cannot believe that someone on my friendslist, someone I trusted with my friends-locked content, someone I didn't even talk smack about behind a filter, would do something so heinous as plagiarise from another writer/fanartist. I mean, what is the internet coming to when you can't trust the people you've clicked a little ticky box for to indicate that you sort of think they're cool? I feel so betrayed. I feel... lied to. I didn't even know annlarimer, but I can't stop feeling guilty. All those times I commented phosfate's fic and art... all those times I said nice things to her... it was all a lie.

Additionally, does fandom really think that LJ relies on their content to bring in new users? Because it seems to me like the majority of people on LJ use it as a journal and social networking site, not to read/post fanfic and meta. And really, if you want to "show" LJ/SUP that your content is important in terms of bringing in users, wouldn't it be more effective to, I don't know, remove all of your content instead of just not posting for a day? Oops, there I go using earth logic again.
