BBC: Japan's fashion rebellion goes West
By Nina Robinson
BBC World Service, London

An underground youth culture in Japan which makes a rebellious fashion statement against traditional rules on eastern beauty, is taking hold on Britain's youth.

Manba involves devotees wearing dark tans, white make-up around their eyes and hair that is often a combination of neon colours.

British teenagers like 18-year-olds Eilish and Declan got caught up in manba after an interest in Japanese culture led them to start researching on the internet, where they came across the style.
Seriously, this is one Japanese fashion trend that I didn't think would take off elsewhere. Last I checked, it wasn't even that common among cosplayers in the U.S., unlike Gothic Lolita, which has a small but dedicated following. Or maybe I'm wrong.
Her social networks are important as she has friends in Japan and the US who are also into the style.
...
"There are also some in America. I'm quite good friends with some of the girls who do it in America."
Looks like I am wrong.

In any event, it seems that the ganguro gals (and at least one guy--Declan) in the UK appreciate the irony inherent in their fashion choice.
"We're Western girls trying to be Japanese girls, trying to be Western - it seems like a funny circle to go around."
I can't top that.

There are also two videos that go with the report.

Former Tennessee Titans quarterback Steve McNair has been killed, a source has confirmed to ESPN.com.

McNair, police said, suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the head in downtown Nashville. A female victim was also found dead, police spokesperson Don Aaron said. Aaron said the woman has not been identified, pending notification of next of kin.

The incident happened near 2nd South & Lea Ave in Nashville.

McNair played 13 seasons in the NFL, 11 were with the Tennessee Titans. He played his final two years with the Baltimore Ravens, retiring after the 2007 season.

McNair was picked third overall in the 1995 draft out of Alcorn State by the then Houston Oilers.

Author feud! [03 Jul 2009|09:10pm]

fandom_lounge

There seems to be a writer's feud on Twitter.

Now, this isn't a for-reals feud, but rather a bunch of writers who have decided to call each other names on Twitter for the amusement of others.

It starts when John Green decides he wants to have a writer's feud. People suggest writers, ranging the gamut of quality from Neil Gaiman to Cassie Cla(i)re (who makes an amusingly ironic comment here. Ultimately, however, Maureen Johnson (no connection to the character from Rent) fires the first shot, despite John's stated wish earlier not to "feud" with her again.

Follower counts are compared. Awards are whipped out and dismissed (though I will admit that Johnson's American covers do have unfortunate implications). There's even a comment about making John cry, as well as a commentary on John's hair.

Justine Larbalestier decides to get in on the feuding action, bringing [info]fandom_wank star Cassie Cla(i)re in with her. "Real" names are revealed. Jellyfish are ordered (for Johnson's bathtub).

Jennifer Lynn Barnes takes sides with Johnson. Johnson attempts to drag Neil Gaiman in on it, but he declines, letting off what is perhaps the best insult in the whole thing.

As of now, Green, who one could say started this fight (and managed to put in a good flamewar on a BlogTV show earlier today), seems to have forgotten about the whole thing.

And they say Twitter is useless. Well, it probably is, and these people would be writing (or perhaps making YouTube videos in Green's case or plagiarizing in Cla(i)re's) were it not for this tremendous waste of time.

ETA: Another postworthy burn.

Let's Play [03 Jul 2009|07:00pm]

[kijikun]
I'm not sure how many people are familiar with the concept of Let's Plays but I've become addicted to them. Pretty much its someone playing a game and offering commentary on it. Blind runs are popular as well especially on horror survival games like Silent Hill.

Those of you that are familiar with them do you have any favorites? Or a let's play you'd recommend to someone who'd just discovered the concept?

On a minor note I've started doing LP's myself. I just finished King's Quest 3 VGA remake, and plan to start on KotR I. But I'd like to line up some games to play after that or if I run into issues with KotR, so do you guys have any suggestion? Please keep it to PC games, or games with emulators. And if any of you have tips or comments about my first attempt please let me know. :)

Somewhere on the internets, the kin are restless. Insults are hurled, egos exposed, and a report is duly written. Unfortunately, it involves some questionable creative decisions on the part of the author, not all of which are welcomed.

No exact copy of the original report, although a slightly edited version was preserved and the rest can be pieced together through wanka comments.

Meanwhile, [info]goblin and [info]_goblin_ appear to display their spiffy new powers of asexual reproduction. Or something. Recipes are shared. And [info]fanpoodlex shows up to... well, I'm not sure, actually.

The moral of this story? Snow goons are bad news.

Over the course of the recent warnings controversy, I kept seeing phrases like: "As an exiled BNF myself..." "I was forced to leave fandom years ago..." "...she was kicked out of fandom..."
...and this isn't the first time I've heard it.

I've been active in various fandoms for about 15 years now and I still don't understand the concept of being "kicked out"; nor have I seen such a thing occur.

What does it even mean? You get a court order to stop cosplaying or writing fanfic? The postal service intercepts your zine submissions? Ninjas come in the night and steal all your DVDs? I'm utterly bewildered. It seems awfully vague, not to mention unenforceable.

I remember those good old days. I was twelve years old, and I thought everyone's internet opinion was serious business. I got my panties in a tight wad whenever someone dissed that one character I obsessed over. Then, I would proceed to declare internet war and make big essays about why no one should say mean things about my favorite character ever.

Really though, why do people care so much? It's a fictional character. That character is a figment of some creative author's imagination. It's not anyone's mom or something. Sure, people's reasoning behind things can be dumb, but let's face it: they'll get lives in a couple of years. Wankers usually do. Okay, not all of them, but still! I love Cassie Ainsworth from Skins. I have this girl crush on her, but I'm not gonna get all pissed the hell of if someone on the internet called her a stupid bitchy whore. Really? I'm too busy keeping chicks off my real life man to care about some fictional character's e-reputation.

Going off of a suggestion from [info]melandry at our Suggestion Post, this would basically involve finding one or more hot-type people for each letter of the alphabet and then posting them in order, which isn't really a theme so much as a creative exercise, I suppose, but I can assure you that it would be interesting, at the very least. I can already think of at least two people to post for 'X'! Oooooh! :D

From the L.A. Times: Gale Storm dies at 87; star of 1950s sitcoms
The actress came to Hollywood as a finalist in a national talent contest, then appeared in numerous movies before starring on TV in the popular 'My Little Margie' and 'The Gale Storm Show.'

June 29, 2009

Gale Storm, who shot to the top on television as the vivacious star of two popular 1950s situation comedies, "My Little Margie" and "The Gale Storm Show: Oh! Susanna," has died. She was 87.

Storm, who also had a successful recording career during her TV heyday, died Saturday of natural causes at a convalescent hospital in the Northern California community of Danville, according to her son Peter Bonnell.

  • ranalore: Labels, Directories, and Communities - Suppose there was a community co-moderated by at least three, but preferrably six or seven, people who held different views in the current warnings debate. Suppose the purpose of this community was to create a directory of the individual labeling policies of fanworks creators, . . .. As proposed, would such a community be useful to you? As proposed, would such a community be hurtful or offensive to you? -

  • gracecourage: On Strength. And Warnings. - I'm posting because I am furious at the number of (people I thought were) decent, caring folks who are referring to survivors of abuse and assault as "fragile, delicate, mentally ill." -
    (tags: warnings)

  • [info]gabriellebelle: Your LJ is not your living room. Really. - If I choose not to label and/or warn in my own space because of some notion that my space exists in an impenetrable bubble, this stranger will likely be missing important meta-info to frame my fic. -

  • [info]puella_nerdii: On Warnings; or, Getting Readers Who Actually Like Your Stuff - Warning is a damned good precaution against getting readers who will suffer actual harm from what I've written. I don't want to harm my readers. I want to challenge them sometimes, I want to get them to think about things -- and, well, sometimes I just want to get 'em horny. But I don't write fic to prove how edgy I am, or to push people out of their comfort zones. -
    (tags: warnings)

  • ranalore: You can't actually have it both ways. - Either you are concerned about making fandom a safer space for people with triggers, or you are interested in making fandom a more comfortable and navigable space for you. Now if you take that second approach, that's fine, that's the way a lot of fandom works now. But if that's the way you roll, stop kidding yourself, and stop trying to kid other people, that you're taking the first approach. If you want to take the first approach, then you need to not dismiss other people when they tell you something you're doing is a trigger for them, no matter how inconvenient it may be to stop or reconfigure what you're doing. -
    (tags: warnings)

  • [info]veradee: On Labelling Fanfics; or On What and How I Read and Write - I don't mean to prohibit labels, but I also don't find them particularly helpful. For example, I have seen enough posts on the internet where some readers complained that a fic was labelled romance but didn't contain enough of the relevant elements to actually be called a romance. But if the labels are so narrowly defined there's always the danger that fics that closely stick to these labels end up being cookie-cutter fics. -
    (tags: warnings)

  • [info]sparky77: ... - From my perspective, it doesn't matter what started the discussion, it was the fact that the discussion was causing pain for trauma survivors that mattered. So many of the things that have been said are pretty much the exact reasons that survivors are often reluctant to open up to people about their experience -
