Backdate: Saturday, September 16th, 2006. Monaco. Matthew Gray Gubler and jessespencer. Meeting the Spencers. Will be backdated and cross-posted. Players Only.
Jesse straightens Gray's tie and then his own, leaning in to kiss his lover gently, full on the lips. Having hidden their tuxes aboard a few days before departure, he knew he could surprise Gray. "Ready to go into town, then?" Docked in Monaco, he's taking Gray to the Casino in the Riviera and plans to show him an indulgent and decadent night. "We have dinner reservations in about a half hour."
Gray looks down at his tux and makes a slight face. "You're sure we gotta do the penguin suits?" he asks for the hundredth time.
"I think someone's gotten a bit too used to being naked," Jesse teases him and bumps his hip. "Don't worry, it's the only fancy night I have planned." He hesitates, "but, I really want you to see this place. It's a sight like no other." Pulling him in close, Jesse kisses his forehead, eyes, cheek and then lips. "Now, let's go have some fun!"
"And I gotta look like a penguin to do it?" Gray inquires dubiously. "And there is a very large scale between naked and this..." he smoothes a hand down the front of his tux. "I look like a piano key..." He lets Jesse drag him along though, actually looking forward to the evening, except for the attire.
Snorting at Gray, Jesse tugs him off the boat and onto the dock, nearly empty except for a couple at the other end. "You look dashing and debonair...I'm going to have to fend off the men and women to keep you at my side." He tucks Gray into him, arm snugging around him as he kisses the side of his face. "Love you."
"Love you too and don't worry, 'm not going anywhere...so you'll be fending them off with me helping. You're my date..." Pressing close, he strokes his fingers through his lover's hair.
Chuckling softly, he stops and tugs Gray in for a thorough kiss this time. "I like the sound of that....my date." He pulls back and they move up the dock. Stiffening as the couple approaching begins to look familiar; Jesse is swearing a blue streak in his mind. Not now. Fuck it. I'm not ready for him to deal with them. His grip on Gray tightens as he prepares himself for battle.
Feeling the tensing of his lover next to him, Gray looks over at him curiously. "What's wrong?" he asks, glancing towards the two people approaching that Jesse is staring...daggers?...at.
"Uh, yeah...take a deep breath, love. Those are the parents." Fuck! Jesse's arm tightens again and his hand tightens hard on Gray's shoulder. He's ready to reassure him when his parents approach. Clearing his throat, Jesse nods at them. "Mum, Dad...I'd like you to meet Gray, my boyfriend. Gray, these are my parents, Dr. Rodney and Robyn Spencer."
The parents? Oh...this should be interesting, Gray thinks to himself--having no delusions that Jesse's parents will like him. He smiles at them though, as he's introduced. "It's a pleasure to meet you," he says, offering his hand to Mr. Spencer first.
Immediately, Jesse wants Gray back in his arms, back away from his folks because he just knows this isn't going to go well.
Dr. Spencer reaches for Gray's hand, his upbringing and polite society demanding, it, but he can't and doesn't hide the sneer entirely. "Gray? I'm sure it is." He takes his hand back and glares daggers at his son, not able to return the sentiment, his anger that Jesse wouldn't just settle down with a girl constantly boiling under his skin.
"Father." Jesse’s tone brooks no argument and he's not about to get into this here and now...and certainly not in front of Gray. Turning to his mother, he prompts her to respond, "Mother?"
Robyn reaches out to Gray and shakes his hand. "I'd like to say it's good to meet you...only we didn't know there was a you to meet." She smiles, softening the words just slightly. "I hope you're enjoying the Lady."
"I wasn't aware previously not knowing the existence of something could mar the pleasure at finding out it did exist. I'm constantly discovering things I didn't realize were there and gain immense pleasure from it," Gray responds, his grin taking the amount of cheek present from the words.
Not able to hide the twinkle in her eye at Gray's statement, she nonetheless sobers when Rodney glares down at them. Still, she nods at Gray and smiles at her son.
"So, I heard you saw Annabelle last month. Why is it she's not the one traveling with you?" His father's baiting tactics haven't changed a bit and he dismisses Gray's presence entirely, turning to Jesse and shutting the other man out of the conversation.
Glaring at his father, Jesse tugs Gray in to his side. "Annabelle is nice enough, but she's not got two brain cells to bump into each other. Regardless, I am in love with Gray...he's my boyfriend and all the wishing and hoping is not going to have me settling down with the girl of your choice." He takes a deep breath and curses his own inability to let his father's shite just roll off him. "And, we are never discussing it again. Mother." He nods her way and moves Gray so they can walk around his parents, entire body starting to tremble with shame that they'd treat his lover so callously.
"Oh," Gray says as he's tugged away, glancing over his shoulder at the Spencers. "Pleasure meeting you!" he calls, still smiling. He'll be damned if he lets those two terrible people get to him. Well, his father is terrible; his mother just goes along with the man--which is almost as bad.
Jesse grits his teeth, though he appreciates Gray's civility and manners. Unknowing, he's got a death grip on his lover and his legs are eating up the length of the dock with a burning need to put as much distance between himself and his parents. Finally, after long moments of silence, he whispers. "I'm sorry, Gray...so sorry for them."
"Jesse," Gray says, voice firm, pulling them to a stop and forcing his lover to release the painful grasp on his arm. "Don't apologize for them. It's fine, really." And it is. Not that Gray doesn't wish they could have been civil and accepting, but what had happened is about what he had expected and he certainly didn't hold it against Jesse.
He lets Gray stop him, remove his hand, but Jesse is still looking further inwards, horrified at his parent's behavior and terrified that Gray is upset. He's so far removed from actually hearing Gray that his lover's words don't penetrate. It's as if a switch has been flipped and he has no interest in Monaco, in the party scene of ever exposing Gray to this world...he just wants to hole up with his lover and forget that his family can't be accepting.
"Jesse," Gray repeats, voice harder now. "Look at me, now."
The voice cuts through and Jesse looks into Gray's eyes, his own miserable and his body still tense.
"None of that matters," he states, gesturing. "Don't stand here and let yourself think it does. What just happened? That's pretty much what I expected to happen when I met them. Do I wish it hadn't been now? Sure...but it had to happen sooner or later. You gotta let it go..."
A deep breath, followed by another and then another. Jesse works to let the tension out of his body, eyes looked with Gray's and feeling the acceptance rolling off his lover. Without warning, he grabs Gray to him, holding him tight and then devouring his mouth on a groan. When he can finally pull back he leans their foreheads together. "I love you and I'm still sorry they were such assholes to you. But, you're right...they don't matter. Not so long as we love each other." He can feel the weight of their looks, knows they're watching from a distance and he really couldn't care less...not with Gray here with him.
"I love you too and you're right, that's what matters. Tell me: did you think this would go differently than it did? Granted, I know you expected to have more control over it, the setting, the time--but the actual outcome, you didn't expect them to be happy to see me or anything like that? If that's the case, then you can just let it go...doesn't change anything except now we can both breathe easy because it's over, I've met them, they don't like me...film at eleven and moving on. And besides, this wasn't about me and I know that too."
"No...not really. I did expect to have more control and that it would go at least a bit better than that." His eyes are a bit haunted, though Jesse has to laugh inside. "I really had hoped they'd come to realize that as much as I do like girls, I'm never going to end up married to one." He sighs and kisses Gray softly. "And, it's not that Mom didn't like you...she did, I could see it. But, Dad holds everything and she knows it."
"Well, give them time, they've only just met me once and perhaps after they see this isn't going to be ending anytime soon, they'll warm to the idea. It will be their loss if they don't."
"It will...if you're not welcome, then they won't be seeing me." Jesse lets out a huge breath, hugs Gray tight and then pulls back far enough to smile at him. "I love you." Another tender kiss and he pulls back enough to take Gray's hand. "C'mon, let's go test Lady Luck."
"I love you too...and she damn well better smile on us after that little encounter!" Gray chuckles, squeezing Jesse's hand--showing he's teasing. "I don't intend to give what just happened another thought tonight and I don't want you to either, deal?"
Jesse nods, smiling gratefully, if a touch sadly at Gray. "Not another thought. They don't deserve that much of our time." He leans over to kiss his lover softly and then grins as he takes his hand and leads him to the casino.
"Lead on then!" Gray says happily, refusing to let Jesse get himself down about this--no matter what he has to do to distract him...
