Will not add to the wank.

...is a perfectly useful and useable word. Snot-nosed culturally illiterate brats.

I'm done.

P.S. Do agree that the book was rather a yawner, though.

Your Name as Mary Sue meme [Jun. 16th, 2004|10:35 pm]
[mood | annoyed]
[music |Turn A Gundam OST]

Gacked from [info]kyuuketsukirui because it amused the heck out of me.

1. Use fanfiction.net's Search >> Story By Summary and look up your name in either Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings.

2. If there are any Mary Sues that share your name, pick the worst-sounding one and post the summary.

In HP, about 25 probable Mary Sues came up. LOTR only pulled 3 stories, one an admitted self insert, the other two a little vague. I'm grateful for this, believe me. I already have enough issues with LOTR fandom. ;P

In HP, "Rebecca" is mostly the daughter of book characters. And she's hooked up with Snape in at least two stories. Which, if he looked like the movie version, I wouldn't object to. Just sayin'.

The worst-sounding summary, without question, is that for Rebecca Dumbledor.

"Rebecca Dumbledor is part mutant part witch, and she has fallen for Malfoy same for him. Some X-men characters are going to in here. Rated "R' sex, fighting, and language." Written by "Wiccasweetie87".

Frankly, though, that one's too easy, so I'm also selecting a runner up, Running Scared: "When a long suffering Rebecca attacks her wife-beating husband with a hammer she is forced to run away before she gets put away. Somehow she stumbles in the the wizardry world where she meets Remus Lupin who must help her come to terms with what has happe".

Well, that was amusing! I'm going to go wash my brain now. With porn. :P

Issac and Teague icony things [May. 31st, 2004|07:29 am]

For those who would be interested: Been playing around with Yet Another Avatar Maker and came up with images of Issac and Teague, the main characters of the werewolf stories I've been working on. Also have avs for two other OCs in a different universe.

My two cents on posting to fandom_wank. [May. 20th, 2004|09:22 pm]
[mood | depressed]

If you're posting to FW, and the wank requires a paragraph or more of explanation--not summary, explanation--it's a boring-ass wank.

If you cannot link to or directly quote most of the supposed meat of the wank (often thereby forcing you to write a paragraph or more of explanation), it's not a very convincing wank. Think of that old standby, "Show, don't tell." Don't tell me these people are asstards, because that just makes you sound like an asstard. Let me judge their asstardery on its own merits.

If you feel it necessary to make a statement along the lines of "This might not seem very wanky," you have just killed whatever marginal interest I had. It's like the saying, "If you feel you have to apologize, you shouldn't have done the thing in the first place." If it may not be all that wanky, why the hell are you taking up space on my friendspage with it? And from a more rhetorical perspective, if you don't have any kind of conviction about the asstardery of somebody involved, how do you expect to convince me of it?

Brought to you by my irritation with unentertaining FW posts. :P

Wake me up when we've declared world peace. [Mar. 27th, 2004|06:33 pm]
[mood | discontent]
[music |Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Maps]

Where do people find the energy for this shit? Seriously. Some weeks it's as much as I can do to get my ass to and from work every day and feed myself regularly. The last thing I'm up for when I finally get home is another intergame slapfight. I can't even keep up as a bystander, never mind someone actually involved.

The biggest thing keeping me from resurrecting Mac is that I really, really like being neutral and able to just not give a fuck about any of this stuff. To walk away when the discussion gets more heated than I'm willing to deal with. Is that passive of me? You betcher ass. Gonna change anytime soon? Hell, no.

I prefer to think of it as picking my battles. God's honest truth, I just...really can't see expending this much energy and emotion on a game (or set of games). I did it once (okay, twice if we count the Mac/Sam breakup), and it sucked wet, hairy camel balls, and I'd like to think I learned from that. *nods*

Speaking of lethargic, thanks to the apnea and the resulting sleeping late AGAIN, I didn't make it for any of my errands today. I'm vexed about this. So I'm going to go have Chinese for dinner and then maybe hang out at Lestat's.

Or, you know, order pizza in and never leave the apartment. We'll see. *shrug*

Retcon rant ahoy. [Feb. 14th, 2004|12:40 am]
[mood | distressed]
[music |Beastie Boys - Sabotage]

Unto thee I say...whateth the fuck?

Apparently my definition of "continuity" is not everybody else's definition of "continuity".

Completely removed from any of the personalities involved, I'm just baffled at the concept of radical character retcon in an RPG still in progress. And I'm genuinely curious if that's actually, like, working for the player and the players of still-affiliated characters. Because when I imagine myself as a player of an affiliated character--and again, this is completely removed from the personalities involved--the only response I can imagine in myself is deep irritation. History is a fundamental basis for human interaction--what you know of a person's past, and your own previous encounters with them, drive how you deal with them in the future. It seems obvious to me that this is just as relevant when roleplaying characters. So it seems to me that in erasing/reworking a character's history, especially events that were acted out in canon, not just mentioned in backstory, one is essentially creating a new person and expecting everyone else to slot them in to the old person's place.

Retconning can and does happen in TV shows, comic books, and some long-running novel series; I don't know if that history in "public" media has made some people better able to deal with it? I tend to associate it with writers who are saddled with pre-existing characters and are so hellbent on creating their own story that they blithely fuck canon to get their way--and frankly, I consider those writers arrogant or lazy. Writers who do it with their own characters? ...I think I have to file those under "confused". Or, yeah, lazy.

For the record, of course I assume character history would be revised in the course of writing something like a novel. But once that novel's been published, then to me that establishes a canon that a responsible author does not fuck with. If, in sequels, you want a character to fulfill a specific need and none of your established characters meet that need, then...you make a new character. Or, you have an established character go through a plausible and documented series of experiences that transform them into the kind of character you need. You don't just change an established character's history to make it convenient. If you do that in a book, I will throw it across the room, and I know I'm not the only reader who would have that reaction. I lose respect for authors who retcon. And I consider RPG posts that were "public" to a game to establish characters in that game the same way a published novel establishes characters in that novel's universe.

I'm not really sure what the point of this is...just explicating the very strong "WTF" reaction I had, for my own recors. Maybe to spark some discussion. I am curious how other people view retcon, in a more general sense--am I unusually uptight about it? I'm perfectly willing to accept that idea. :D Or is the idea of "canon" in a multiauthor, ongoing thing like an RPG widely held to be more fluid than in novels and short stories?

Mandy Moore: "I want to have gone to college and live somewhere suburban, quiet and regular - I'll be in the Catskills (New York) singing karaoke in a bar. I did a film last year with Macaulay Culkin and Jena Malone and we'd go karaoking a lot."

And Mac did record vocals for one of the songs used in "Party Monster". Hmmmm.

OC ramble [Sep. 28th, 2003|03:48 am]
[mood | exhausted]
[music |House Of Pain - Shamrocks And Shenanigans]

Sometimes it's a real challenge to decide just how much angst to give your characters.

Take, for example, Teague and Issac. My original impression was that Issac is the one with most of the sturm und drang due to the lycanthropy and suchlike, and Teague is generally sweet and cheerful and supportive.

Now Teague is raising his hand and saying "You know...." He's Irish-American, and raised Catholic, but now (in his early 20s) is fairly mellow about religion--goes to the holiday Masses, generally believes the tenets of the Church but doesn't browbeat other people about them, etc.

Then I thought, "What if he didn't know/realize/think he was gay before meeting and falling for Issac? How would that affect him?" If I understand correctly, the Catholic Church officially regards homosexuality as a sin, and if you take Communion without confessing/being absolved/stopping a sin of that nature, you're committing an even bigger sin. And he's been raised to believe this, so it seems like if he chooses this relationship with Issac, then he can't in good faith consider himself part of the Church. Which seems like it would cause a fair amount of inner turmoil, even for someone not hugely devout.

At the same time, that kind of story (one person in the relationship discovering their sexuality, and attendant angst) feels like it's been rather, well, done, both in original fiction and fanfiction. So I feel a little reluctant to tread that same ground. If that makes sense.

*throttles her characters* I only have three days left to write the Sigil monthly challenge with you two! This is SO not the time to be throwing me these curveballs!

Anybody have any thoughts/suggestions?

Mood theme whining. [Sep. 28th, 2003|03:14 am]
[music |Goo Goo Dolls - Black Balloon]

Christ in a babushka, JournalFen has over 200 system moods! And the vast majority of them aren't even treed/nested, so it's not like you can assign an image to a top level mood and have it default for several others.

I've asked if the group working on the system mood themes can also explore organizing the moods better. :P Because like hell am I going to sit there assigning images individually for 200+ moods. >.<

(yeah, working on--what else?--a Macaulay mood set. don't have that many images of the boy; may have to expand it to a Mac/Kieran set or something)

I am also, for no real reason, contemplating a new layout for this journal. If not Mac-centric, then something with gay softcore photos, maybe...we'll see.
