This is why I try to avoid RPGs

I always end up -overthinking- them ;_;

Persona 3 is an awesome game with a pretty bad translation which I know I would hate a lot more if I didn't have a secret, embarrassing weeaboo past to fall back upon. I suppose lots of animu nerds are currently wanking all over the place over the fact that the translation left the honorifics in, but personally I think it blows. Translation is more than finding the exact word that means the exact same thing as the exact word in the other language -- even more important is that something that has certain undertones and subtexts has the same undertones and subtexts when translated, while remaining as comprehensible as possible to someone who has little to no knowledge of the cultural context in which the original work was written. For example, instead of leaving -kun and -chan scattered all over, why not trust the nuances of the English dialogue to indicate what relationships the characters have with each other? The dialogue itself isn't badly translated in this game. It -has- nuances, it could stand on its own without Japanese honorifics everywhere.

ARGH AND THEN THE FRENCH GUY, SHUTUPSHUTUPSHUTUP.
THAT TRANSLITERATED ACCENT IS HARD ENOUGH TO READ AS IT IS WITHOUT THROWING JAPANESE WORDS IN AS WELL. JESUS CHRIST, JUST DO AS EVERY OTHER BIT OF PROPERLY TRANSLATED MATERIAL EVER DOES AND PRETEND LIKE HE IS SPEAKING JAPANESE, BUT WRITE IT IN ENGLISH WITHOUT THROWING IN SHIT LIKE "I 'AVE HAD NO TOMODACHI IN NIHON" OH MY GOD. BEING A SEWING DORK I PRETTY MUCH HAD TO JOIN FASHION CLUB EVEN IN AN RPG AND THIS HORRIBLE TRANSLATION IS MAKING ME REGRET THAT DECISION SO HARD AFTER ONLY 5 SECONDS.

"Yatta, yes! Zis eez ze best sewing I 'ave ever done!"
SHUT UP SHUT UP SHUT UP

Also, I like knowing the nuances of my choices in RPGs. Currently I'm waiting for my boyfriend to wake up and tell me what I should say to a dialogue choice that involves knowing the GODDAMN NUANCES OF SAYING GOODBYE IN VARIOUS WAYS IN JAPANESE, and while I know this is not going to end my game or whatever, there is ABSOLUTELY no reason for any choice in a translated game to require you to know the language the game was translated from.

This is only bothering me because I think the high-school simulator bits of the game are at least 100 times more interesting than the plot and the fighting v_v

SHUT UP, WEEABOO. SHUT UP ABOUT JAPAN. I guess I'm not getting any more levels of Temperance because YOUR DIALOGUE MAKES ME WANT TO SHOOT MYSELF IN THE FACE FOR REALZ.

Goddamn, this song creeps me out. o_o

I think I'm too dumb for Vox. I've figured out how to post and upload pictures, but I don't know how to find communities or read other people's posts. It's all too picture-based and user-friendly; I long for the old days when websites were written in notepad and we uploaded all our fanfics to Geocities in .txt files.

1.
Marguerite leaned close and clasped his hands, and Siebel's heart skipped a beat -- but it had been doing so since Valentin, clad in splendid soldier's blue, had announced his imminent departure. They sat together in the garden bower, as close as lovers might, as faraway as mourners will.

"He will return," she said, her voice small and trembling, her fingernails marking white crescents into his skin. "He will return." Her voice sounded no more sure for the repetition, and he held her as close as he dared, willing away the chill of the spring night, the soon-empty house, the imagined day when she would bury a brother and he...

"Ho, Siebel!" called the familiar voice, and Marguerite pulled away an instant too late, leaving Siebel blushing under Valentin's amused smile. "What tryst am I interrupting?"

"In truth," Siebel protested, "it is no --" but Marguerite let out a quiet sob, and Valentin drew her into his arms.

"Not even death can keep me from the ones I love," he said, and Siebel forgot to breathe as Valentin took his hand. "Take care of her --" and Siebel found his fingers suddenly intertwined with Marguerite's as Valentin drew away. "Until I return."

He turned, and left, and Marguerite slumped against Siebel's shoulder with a small cry. Siebel looked down at their joined hands, suddenly cold, and exhaled.

And not the browser, either. Sadly enough, I think it would be -less- dorky to slash Opera/IE than Valentin/Siebel.

The wool was pink, feathery, and thin; he'd bought it to make a scarf for Sybil, but it feels scratchy and sharp as it digs into his wrists, and he thinks that next time maybe he ought to knit a project out of silk.

He's used to heavier yarns, that knit up fast at large gauges and wrap like soft ropes around his throat, dyed bright blues and silvers that blend in well when wound about the bedposts. The pink mohair, lace-weight, tangles together, and will be difficult to un-knot come morning, but it scrapes when he struggles, and the pink marks on his wrists match the pink fibres in his hair.

Aakesh arches up into the soft weight of the yarn ball sitting on his chest, and his quiet gasp is drowned out by the clatter of a pair of aluminum needles hitting the floor.
Someone stole one of my icons.
Does this mean I've hit the big time?

Eh... usually I think yes, icon stealing is just as idiotic as people who complain about icon stealing. But that's my art and my RP character, and the person who stole it is an idiot, so now I'm a little pissed. I don't know what to do about it, though, without causing wank.

Edit -- I know html. Really. v_V

Florida slipped a few inches west, deeper into Mexico's warm, tropical Gulf. The earth shook, the very rocks groaned, old people scuttled from the heaving beaches as the land undulated beneath their feet. High winds blew roofs from houses as the US gasped its completion, and an enormous tidal wave completely submerged Isla Mujeres and wiped Cancun from the map.

Mexico shoved its sleepy northward neighbor, and the course Rio de Janeiro shifted several miles. "Move," it growled in heavily accented English. "I'm sure as hell not sleeping in the wet spot."
Ah, how I love my old anime club's mailing list! Just now, someone replied to a thread about downloading and music piracy with this gem of wank---

Wow, you are pathetic Mike the Red Devil. You would
prefer a
communist government over a totally free and
democratic one that we
have today?! YOu just make me SICK, I truely hope you
burn in hell
for your comments and beliefs. YOu know whats really
funny, I don't
even know who you are (I dont think), and I can tell
you are a
complete asshole, traitor and a communist. All hail
Hitler? Is
that your prayer each day? And yes, you are a pirate,
time to walk
thee plank.

I thought that would be the end of the immaturity! But now people are wanking about McCarthyism, and the original poster has threatened to beat up the guy who flamed him at the next meeting.

Ah, if only I still lived in Milwaukee! The people annoyed the hell out of me, we never watched good anime, but ah, the hilarity when they'd get pissed at each other!

I rant about this all the time.

Why do people who scan and upload pictures of other people's art, be it from manga, magazines, anything like that, think they deserve credit when people use those scans?

Yes, it was nice of you. Yes, it would be polite for someone to link back if they use something you scanned in a layout, or icon, or whatever. But, if someone doesn't credit you for using something you scanned but didn't create, please, for the love of god, don't go around whining and bitching like you were actually plagiarized!

And why the hell are you putting your name or URL or website logo on other people's art? Unless you drew it, commissioned it, or were given it as a gift, you have no right.

Ten seconds of sticking a book on a scanner does not create intellectual property.

Edit -- ooh, and my journal looks awesome with proper color settings.
The first fanfic I ever wrote! Based on something I read in English class! It saves the life of characters who die! It's written in script format! XD

I sucked so hard.

--- LOVE AND RHETORIC ---

[A blank stage with no set or scenery other than
a wooden pier in the middle. A rowboat
carrying two Elizabethans docks at the pier.
One of them gets out of the boat right away, but
the other stays in the boat, with his back to the
other.]

Ros. Come on, Guildenstern.

Guil. No.

Ros. What's the good of sulking?

Guil. What's the good of not sulking? Either
way, it's ended anyway. Will it really change
anything if I refuse to get out of the boat?

[Ros. puzzles over this for awhile]

Ros. Are we playing at questions again?

Guil. No.

Ros. Then I don't understand.

Guil. Neither do I. (time, and Ros. freezes) All I
understand, all that is, is... nothing. I can't bring
myself to say it, to tell you-- (he breaks off, gets
out of the boat, and walks over to Ros., who is
still standing on the dock, frozen in space. He
walks in a circle around Ros., then stops and
stands in front of him again. Ros. remains
frozen.) It's stupid, I know... and what's worse, I
don't even know.... Rosencrantz!

Ros. (unfreezing) What?

Guil. Have you ever known something so well,
have had it be a part of you so long, that you
don't even remember why it's true, if it's true, or
even what it is, sometimes?

Ros. When did you get off the boat?

Guil. Am I?

Ros. Am I what?

Guil. Are you off the boat?

Ros. I have been off the boat all along, ever
since it docked. It's you who-- (freeze) --who
gave up, who decided you had nothing to live
for... How am I to offer you meaning after you
affirm that there is none? Whe could find
meaning... (he reaches out and almost touches
Guil.'s face)... if only you'd look. (unfreeze) You
were on that boat not five minutes ago. Now
you're not.

Guil. I must have gotten off when you weren't
looking.

Ros. (accepting, although he's been watching
Guil. the whole time) All right. (pause)

Guil. Now what?

Ros. England, I suppose.

Guil. We're in England.

Ros. Then what do we do now?

Guil. Find the king. (pause) I don't know where
he is. Do you? (Ros. shakes his head) All right.
(points) You go that way. I'll go this.

Ros. (frightened)You mean split up?

Guil. (points in opposite direction) You go this
way, I'll go this.

Ros. (shouting) But what does it matter, if we're
not together?

[Guil stops, thunderstruck. Pause. Then Guil.
shakes his head sadly.]

Guil. It doesn't... nothing does, anymore.
Except.... Let's both go this way, then.

[They set off in opposite directions. Fade to
black.]

[Scene: the dock is gone, and the stage is
completely black, except for a dimly lit pattern
that suggests a forest. Various bird sounds
suggest early morning. Ros. and Guil. are
sleeping on the ground, and look quite
comfortable.]

Ros. (sitting up and looking around)
Guildenstern?

Guil. (sits up) Ow, my back.

Ros. I could rub it for you.

Guil. No... someone might come in.

Ros. Here?

Guil. (looks around) No, you're probably right...
no one will. Not here, not now.

[Just then,a voice rings out, accompanied by
fanfares.]

Voice. Make way for the king!

[A long procession crosses the stage.]

Guil. (nudging Ros.) The letter!

[Ros. shakes his head. The procession exits.]

Guil. Why didn't you show him the letter? We
could have been finished... it could have been
over.

Ros. I didn't want to.

Guil. But we were created, by a power that
meant for us to be pawns, leaves blown in a
storm! We aren't supposed to have free will!
Unless... (pensive) unless fate meant for him to
pass us by, and there's something more in store
for us... but what could happen, now? What
could happen now, that would be worse than...
(he looks at Ros. with pain showing in his eyes)
...than this?

[Guil. breaks off, terrified that Ros. will interpret
that to mean what it does. He
relaxes, somewhat, when he realizes that Ros.
is staring off into the distance, presumably at a
tree.]

Ros. It must be nice, to be a leaf.

Guil. (relieved and disappointed) What?

Ros. To be a leaf. You wouldn't have to think
about fate, about death.... (quietly) about love...
(more jovially) About going to England to get
your head struck off, eh?

Guil. It's the same as death, anyway.

Ros. Love?

Guil. Getting your head struck off. Unless they
miss.

Ros. It would be nice if they'd miss... we could
go home then.

Guil. (puzzled) Why would we do that? Why
would they, for that matter?

Ros. I don't know... but it would be nice.

Guil. (somewhat bitterly, but resigned) A lot of
things would be nice. That doesn't mean they'll
ever happen. (he starts walking) We'd better
keep moving.

[They exit. A second later, they walk back on.]

Ros. What was that?

Guil. I don't know. (they contemplate the
offstage area.) It looks like a castle.

Ros. Where the King lives?

Guil. Yes.

Ros. Let's go.

[He starts off in the directon of the castle. Guil
stares after him for a second, then urgently
steps toward him and grabs his hand, pulling
him in the opposite direction. Their eyes meet,
and they stand motionless in the center of the
stage for a long time. Then Ros. smiles,
perhaps seeing something in his own eyes
mirrored in Guil's, and goes with him. Fade to
black. ]
No doubt something vile and cheap -- whatever grimy little tabloid would hire Creevy certainly would never give away something drinkable. He smirked, nodded at something Colin had said, and took a tentative sip.

His eyes watered, and he almost dropped the glass. Colin had already finished half the bottle.

After this segment, comes a pornographic photo shoot. Shall I continue?

It was decent. Clumsy, but decent. I wanted to smack the characters and make them stop eating handfuls of stupid-pills at every turn, but it was decent.

~~I don't doubt that Percy will turn out good in the end -- he was always clumsily shuffled out of the room the moment he might have had to actually prove his loyalty to the Ministry -- but he's just so darn cute when he's being the biggest prat ever. There was ink on his face~~ *squeee* And Percy isn't short for anything~~~ *double squeee*

~~I wonder what the middle names of the other Weasleys are?

~~If not for the characters chowing down large handfuls of stupid-pills at every turn, Sirius would have lived. Thank god for stupid-pills.

~~(Paraphrased) "Who wants to take off Snape's pants?"

~~ Pansy made a comment about Cho's bad taste in dating Harry. Something like. "Chang? Bad taste -- at least Cedric was good-looking." It took me five reads to realize this was not directed to Harry.

~~ Inquisitor? XD The Ministry's naming conventions are almost as creepy as those of the US Government.

~~ Weasley is our King! It drips with slash potential.

More when my computer stops making horrid noises.

What I hate most, at this particular moment, is finding an absolutely fascinating fanfic -- long, involved, almost epic -- that contains my absolute favorite pairing in the world, and everything is written absolutely beautifully, except the pairing.

There's suspense, there's drama, there's mystery, and there's also Ron and Draco acting like sappy twelve year old girls and staring at one another's butts at inopportune moments. So, here is a realistic fic based upon those irritating characterizations.

"Quick, the Deatheaters are at the door! I should run, but Draco my love! The sight of your denim-clad gluteus maximus has inspired me with the poetic fire of one thousand erotic suns!"

"Oh Ron! I am lost in your eyes, which smell of strawberries!"

"Avada Kedavara!"

"Oh shit."

END.

The last couple days, I've been completely mental. Not wanting to get anything accomplished, unable to sit still for even a minute, not eating, snapping at my friends...

Part of this is girl problems, and thus forgivable. But another part, a large part, and a part I don't like to admit, is because I haven't yet read Order of the Phoenix.

It's... weird. XD

Not to mention, there are two songs stuck in my head right now, and 'Ballad of the Green Berets' to the tune of 'All the Things she Said' is hardly conducive to mental health.

The villain most likely has been slain. But the audience won't stay for the second half of the double feature without something to listen to during the intermission."

Bush touched a small remote, and a video screen blazed to life. Images flashed rapid-fire across the screen -- Iraqi prisoners led in chains, a dead child, the American flag raised triumphantly over Baghdad. Despite himself, Howard began tapping a syncopation on the arm of his chair, began humming a stirring march under his breath. He was surprised when he looked up to see Bush standing close, and even more surprised when he felt the heat of the other man's body.

The President smiled a mad little smile. "After the march, write a love theme."

What makes me stop reading?

This is a GOOD meme. *prepares for a long and bitchy typing session*

1. Massively non-canon relationships presented as a given, especially side pairings that read as though the author put them in to sucker in readers. Pretty much any fanservice, really, from random sex that does nothing for the plot or characterization, to Draco in leather pants.

2. When character A realizes that he is gay! And in love with character B! And character B comes to the exact same realization simultaneously! So they tell everyone, and everyone is happy for them! Some people had already guessed! Especially Ginny! And someone is a homophobe, and That's Bad! But he is converted by the Power of their Twue Wuv! And they skip merrily along their happy fluffy way, with no conflict in the fic whatsoever, leaving their readers dead of boredom somewhere around the second paragraph!

3. Author's notes in parentheses in the middle of the fic.

4. Multipart fics in which the author repeatedly states that she doesn't know where the plot is going. Especially when she asks her readers to tell her what they want to happen.

5. When one has to really look closely in order to find the 'fic' in a songfic. Come to think of it, any song lyrics at all are usually a point at which I stop.

6. Fred/George as a side pairing. Especially when people find out, and don't profess any sort of surprise or dismay. Bonus points if Ginny already knew and is happy for them.

7. I will never, EVER finish reading anything that doesn't begin a new paragraph when a new character begins talking.

8. Lengthy authors notes explaining exactly why an author used non-standard word choices, slang, particular grammatical constructions, etc. If it worked, it worked, and I didn't notice; if it didn't work, no amount of explanation will keep it from sounding like a mistake.

9. When someone with otherwise excellent writing skills creates a horrible, nonsensical, moronic plot, or a character that is annoying to the limit, and treads the thin line between 'quality' and 'suck' for longer than anyone should think possible -- then, not only do I stop reading, I curse the author's name and lay waste to the landscape in my rage.

10. When the dialogue is written in absolutely proper standard written English, with absolutely no regard for the fact that it is supposed to be coming from the mouths of teenage boys. Most especially when the author's grasp on standard written English is so tenuous that she doesn't quite dare to put together compound sentences.
