sandra_kay wanted it -- maybe some of you do, too -- SWEENEY TODD Original Cast Recordi |

Okay, well... I don't know how 'original' it is, but the audio is lifted from the 1982 HBO airing of the Sweeney Todd musical. Angela Lansbury is in it, and I know she was in the debut performance on Broadway. So I'm assuming, when someone mentions an 'original cast recording', that they are indeed referring to this. It may not be from the first night it aired (I believe it was recorded from an 1980 performance).
Anyway, I edited out most of the dialogue -- except the lead-ins. Mind you, if you're a fan of ST because of the movie, the musical is quite different. There's no subtlety in most of the performances... no brilliant Edward Sanders to make you cry when he sings "No one's gonna harm you" to Mrs. Lovett, even as she sings it to Todd, and no sublime tenor of Jamie Campbell Bower (or his ever-growing forehead, as tho' it were stung by bees to which he's allergic)...
Moreover, there's no do-overs... no overdubs... so, while some people may have missed a minor cue here and there in the movie, the musical staging is in a constant state of 'catch-up' to the actor-singers on stage, who, after being so moved into character, may have held a line too long for effect, or drawn out a sentence too long (also for effect)...
That's the spontaneity of life on a musical stage, and it's what attracts performers... but it's also what turns off a lot of non-performers, who just want to hear the music and hear it as it was written, not as it was interpreted by actors, directors, conductors, and circumstance.
Still... this is the version I remember as a twee one. This is the version we watched in high school when we considered doing it for our musical of that year [ we opted to just sing all of the main songs -- I got to sing Pretty Women (!!!) ]. And I still really like Angela Lansbury's Worst Pies in London and It's Priest.
Without further delay, here is ACT I: Sendspace.
Act II should be done by ... maybe Saturday afternoon.
Addendum - Yes, I know God, That's Good! is technically the start of Act II... but it is included in Act I in this download. I'm sure no one minds. ~wink~
Addendum++ Oh, and my loving mother bought me Christopher Moore's LAMB Special Edition Gift Book. It's presented like a hotel Bible, complete with gilded lettering on the front,gilt-edge pages, and attached red ribbon bookmark. I love it! I hope they do this with his other religious absurdist stories!
