11:38pm: I've decided I like the Iranian president.
Saw the president of Iran Ahmadinejad on 60 Minutes last night.

I liked him. He's smart, well-versed on international and U.S. politics (he brought up Katrina), and he has a sense of humor. When 60 Minutes read George Bush's statement that Ahmadinejad had "made mistakes" as a president, Ahmadinejad all but cracked up. I agree. In the face of Bush's staggering mistakes in Iraq, well, people with glass houses....

He said something interesting, too: that a nuclear bomb is of no use these days. Did having the bomb keep the Soviet Union from collapsing? Does having nuclear weapons help the U.S. out of the quagmire in Iraq? The time of nuclear weapons has passed.

He wanted to lay a wreath or somesuch at the World Trade Center. The U.S. government refused, citing construction and security concerns. The Bush administration derisively called it a PR event.

Yes. Exactly, you morons. A diplomatic gesture aimed at preventing war. This is good. It means Iran does not want war.

The Bush administration claimed people were upset that he would attempt to do this. I looked around. Politicians were upset. I'm not exactly seeing any protests in the street. In fact, it doesn't seem that many people know he suggested it in the first place.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch... the Bush administration is still trying to provoke war with Iran.

- Newsweek ran a story leaked by ex-Bush neo-cons that Cheney tried to get the Isreali's to strike strike the Iranian nuclear site at Natanz in order to create a pretext for war.

- I'm sure you all know by now that as part of the troop surge the US sent nuclear submarines to the Gulf that have no use in Iraq (unless we plan to fire on our own troops), but are excellent missle platforms to attack Iran.

- I'm sure you're well aware of the attempts to claim that Iranian components make a substantive link to blame Iran for the problems in Iraq (never mind that of over 25,000 prisoners we're holding in Iraq, only 280 are foreign nationals, proving we're fighting Iraqis). Meanwhile, we're ignoring Blackwater smuggling automatic weapons into Iraq to sell on the black market ... the disappearance of US weapons that the Pentagon can't account for and say that the serial numbers were never written down ... the fact that we didn't secure entire depots of munitions in 2003, giving the Iraqis plenty of material for IEDs.

- I'm sure you're aware that Iran has a nuclear program that the Bush administration objects to, one that experts feel is far from producing a nuclear bomb. Yet the Bush administration has proposed giving assistance to India's nuclear program (one that has produced nuclear weapons and a delivery system) as part of a deal for F-16s, and has no complaints about Pakistan's active nuclear program. Go figure.

Why, it's looking an awful lot like the case for WMDs. )
