Sex scenes.
[Locked to Est members]

Question for actors - what kind of rules do you have about doing sex scenes? How do you feel about them?

I ask because I just came across an article about sex scenes with quotes from two women I worked with on The Tudors - now, me and Natalie had talked quite a bit about it and we both agreed it was definitely not the easiest bit of work - she asked for a closed set, got it, and was fine - but we all went out afterwards and talked about how weird it was to pretend to fuck with a dozen people standing around making sure there isn't too much glare off your arse and that your elbow is in the right place. So that wasn't much of a big deal.

But Ruta's quote -
"I was absolutely terrified and had no idea what was going on," she recalls. "I cried afterwards because I was thinking, 'This isn't acting, what am I doing? My mum's going to see this.' But now I'm very strict on what I do – I have to know that a sex scene is going to give the audience information about your character or a relationship. If it doesn't do either of those, I won't do it."

I knew she was a bit nervous, but I had no idea how badly she felt about it. And I feel like shit about that because we really did go for it - so I get what she means with "not acting" because yeah, there was a lot going on. I'd said OK, we have this in the script, and this, so how do you feel about doing this, and she said she was all for it. And she seemed fine afterwards. I didn't know - and I still don't know if it's a case of her not being OK when she'd sat down and thought about it (and realised her mam would see it) or if she wasn't OK at the time and I missed it because she was acting.

I suspect its very different for men than for women. It's fairly unusual for men to be dealing with full-frontal nudity, whereas women get asked to do it a lot. Baring breasts is so common now it almost isn't worthy of comment in a movie.

I imagine under those conditions a lot of women, especially if they're just starting out, would feel pressure to do things they're not really comfortable with, just because "everybody does it". It's a terribly insidious form of peer pressure. It's not up to fellow actors, though, to make sure everyone's all right. It's up to the director, the casting director, the agent, and the actors themselves to be sure they only go as far as they feel comfortable with.

As for me? I've done a few sex scenes. They're always uncomfortable and really, really unsexy. But, no, I don't draw any lines. Whether that's because I'm a man, or because I work out an insane amount of hours in a day, or because I'm Australian, or because I really don't care if people watch me fuck I couldn't tell you. Probably all of the above.

"It's fairly unusual for men to be dealing with full-frontal nudity,"

Yeah, there's one scene in The Tudors that took a ridiculous amount of time to film, because they were trying to see how much skin they could get away with showing without actually going full monty. No idea why, but I didn't object so they went with it. So I'm in bed with the most carefully arranged blanket in the history of bedclothes just about covering cock and balls, and nothing else.

Do Aussies have a thing about random public nudity/shagging then?

I remember that shot. *grin*

Not all of us, no, but the nudity part is certainly more casual than in the US. The public shagging may just be my own kinks coming through. ;-)

Well at least it was memorable... I have done completely naked in a few films now, I'm really not bothered by it. But that was just strange.

*nods* Same with Ireland, which is strange given the whole Catholic country thing. But most of the Irish actors I know are a hell of a lot more casual about stripping off than the Americans.

I love my people, but on the whole, we do have a puritan streak. *shrug and grin*

Yeah, not bad. Beginning to enjoy my year off, just back from a couple weeks in Sydney.

Sydney? You should have told me lovely. I could have hooked you up with some people, had them show you a good time.

It was a spur of the moment thing, needed to get away, you know? I had a great time, made a bit of music, surfed some, surfed a lot, drank some good wine and hung out with some pretty girls.
