The Bat Returns

Horrible Miyazaki pun aside, FUCK. At least I was awake when it got in this time. Bad news: all the windows were shut, meaning it's found another entry. Good news: I have a hunch what that other entry is, and have at least temporarily blocked it.

They're getting in through my goddamn stove.

Ok, not the stove so much as the flue above it, that channels smoke out. No grate, as it turns out. Starting to wonder if that's against code, have informed landlord, and in the mean time the fan is on.

Oh, right, but the way I found this out. I go to the bathroom, I walk out, and it was very lucky that I had just emptied my bowels because a bat whizzed by about 6" from my face. Needless to say there was much swearing. The bat and I played this game of chicken for about two minutes where I was trying to close all the doors to contain it in the "living room" (large central area) and it was making figure-8s around the room. Eventually I managed to close all the other doors and open the balcony door.

The damned flying rodent didn't want to leave at first. Eventually I blocked off part of the living room by standing there and ki'ai-ing at it. It hung on the balcony door curtains for a little bit but eventually got the idea and flew out. They really are adorable, I just don't want a wild one IN MY APARTMENT at regular intervals.

Also, still no roommate, not getting paid for my vacation this coming week, and increasingly frustrated about the whole situation.
  • OH HOLY SHIT. Bats from the STOVE? DDDDDDDDD:
    • I was actually kind of impressed by the ingenuity.
      • Bat #1: Dude. We can so make this one shit a brick if one of us gets in there again.

Bat #2: I am so TOTALLY going through the stove. NEVER gonna see that one coming.

Bat #1: Dude, if you pull this off it's drinks for everyone.
  • Horrible Miyazaki pun aside

Actually, Miyazaki wasn't that involved with The Cat Returns, apart from suggesting the story.

Anyhoo, Bats from the Stove would, as Dave Barry would say, be a great name for a band.
    • Really? I thought he'd been more involved in it than that. It has a lot of his style. Also, in the English dub, Cary Elwes voices the Cat and it makes me very happy.
      • Cary Elwes voices the Cat and it makes me very happy.

I remember thinking, "Okay, this is awesome... let's hope they can get him back for the same part in Whisper of the Heart," and then they did, and lo! it was even more awesome. :D
    • Or an excellently bad Sci-Fi movie. Sharks in Venice! Bats in the Stove!
  • But why the heck would they want to fly in there in the first place? Are you some sort of bat whisperer? And if so, maybe you could trade places with me, the bug whisperer.
    • Oh I get bugs too, mostly small ones. Remarkably, their numbers seem to be cut down since this bat got into my apartment. As for why, I assume that it smells the food in my kitchen through the exhaust vent. Not sure why it would decide a narrow, metal tube is a good thing to fly into, but this is also a bat that flew toward an open door and decided it would rather do a 90-degree turn and stay in an enclosed space. I think this guy's just a bit special.
