Where I'm at, just in case Although I doubt LJ is going to simply blink out like a dead lamp, (or any of the sites I live at) just in case, you can find me here:
venivincere.livejournal.com venivincere.insanejournal.com www.journalfen.net/users/venivincere/ www.venivincere.com venivincere at hotmail dot com (in a pinch only) venivincere at gmail dot com Also, I'm venivincere at Archive of Our Own On Twitter, I'm venivincere (notice a pattern, here?) I'm almost never on IM anymore, so I'll leave it blank.
I use Semagic and crosspost everywhere with almost every post, so wherever you find me things should be seamless. Someone the other day mentioned a clearinghouse for fannish people, but I can't remember the name or URL. If any of you know it, could you please leave a message in comments?
Thanks! See you around teh internetz.

Music Review: Gaslight Anthem, Down Down Down, Blackpool Lights, Chromeo, Ani DiFranco So Amazon had some free MP3s that I picked up yesterday. Of the five I downloaded, only one of them wasn't a total win. Not bad for free. Gaslight Anthem: The '59 Sound This song sounds so much like a Bruce Springsteen sort of song. But unlike other songs (*cough*Sex on Fire*cough*) it doesn't feel like a bad cover. It's original enough that it doesn't irritate me. Instead it evokes the mood/sound/style of Springsteen in the best way. The lyrics are not exactly uplifting, but then neither were most of Springsteen's. It's a good song and it makes me interested in hearing more from them. Down Down Down: Run Like Hell Nice piano, interesting falsetto moments. It feels nostalgic. It reminds me of, the mid-80s in a way. It's catchy and very listenable. The lyrics are a little emo, but that's hardly a criticism. I'm definitely going to be checking out more of there stuff. Blackpool Lights (myspace link - warning for autoplay): This Town's Disaster Kind of reminds me of the Toadies. I like the sound and the sort of rough vocals. It's definitely a repeatable listen. I think they'd probably be pretty interesting live, because they sound like they're holding back slightly for the recording, just waiting to break free and really scream it out. Another I'm interested in checking out further. Chromeo: Momma's Boy This is the one that disappointed me. The music and vocals are really enjoyable. Very catchy. But the lyrics bug me. They're not grossly offensive or anything, they just happen to irritate one of my personal issues. I still enjoy the song, but I can't listen to it often because of the button pressing thing. I'd have to see the lyrics before I listened to any of their other songs. Ani DiFranco: Emancipated Minor And now for something completely different. I'd heard of Ani DiFranco before so I thought I'd give the song a listen. While not exactly upbeat musically, it is a good song and I'm interested in hearing more. At the time of my posting, all of these are still free. Current Mood: okayCurrent Music: Panic At the Disco - Nine In the Afternoon (Radio Mix) |

LJ dying for really real this time? The bubble in social networking has burst, decisively. LiveJournal, the San Francisco-based arm of Sup, a Russian Internet startup, has cut about 20 of 28 employees — and offered them no severance, we're told.

Fiction: Pete The Dragon Slayer (Bandom, Patrick/Pete, NC-17, First Time) Title: Pete The Dragon Slayer Fandom: Wentz+Bandom Pairing: Patrick Stump/Pete Wentz Rating: NC-17 Category: First Time Word Count: 2068 Summary: Since Pete was the one who had, inadvertently damn it, made the monster it was up to him to slay it. [Set while they're recording From Under The Cork Tree but there's nothing to really indicate that in the story itself.] Notes: Um...I blame Robin! Who also kindly gave it an audiencing. Disclaimer: This story is based on the fannish constructs of bits of the public personas of real people. If you know any of the real people in this story, or are them, you should probably go away now. TV Tropes is a nifty site, check it out! ( The third time Patrick started bitching loudly, and some might even call it shouting, about the way recording was going Pete had finally had enough. ) Current Mood: accomplishedCurrent Music: Fall Out Boy - I Don't Care (Cobra Starship Suave Suarez Remix) |

Sad and angry I just found out that one of my childhood friends was murdered two days ago. He and his older brother moved away when we were still just kids, but our families kept in touch. His brother was just in town this summer, visiting for a few days. I found out from my mom that the neighborhood association where he lived had turned off the streetlights and let go the guard who used to patrol the neighborhood at night because people were not paying their association dues. Since then, several cars have been broken into, and now this. They took his laptop and cell phone; he had nothing else. http://www.wbt.com/news/details.cfm?article_id=44925 Current Mood: sad |

Simple and Delicious 4 strips thick-cut bacon, trimmed of excess fat 1/2 head cabbage, rough-chopped salt and fresh-ground pepper to taste Chop the trimmed bacon and separate into pieces. In large sautee pan or wok, heat bacon until grease from bacon coats pan. Add rough-chopped cabbage, sautee, stirring frequently, until bacon done and cabbage just going soft. Add salt and fresh-ground pepper to taste, stir in, turn off heat and serve. Can be served as is, or over rice (basmati is best). Enjoy! Current Mood: fullCurrent Music: blessed silence! |

Out Of Bounds progress report, and skater standings. I'm not going to finish all of Out Of Bounds today. Most of it. But not all of it. I have roughly six scenes (with ongoing expansions....) left to write. Vacation's over tomorrow, had family stuff last night. Came home exhausted and distracted (that's family for you). Got edits but no core writing done afterward. Looks like I'll be working on the last of Out Of Bounds through this coming week. For those who are curious... ( the names and standings of John's competitors at Nationals, because, yes, I am that anal. ) Current Mood: spaceyCurrent Music: Pelican - Last Day Of Winter |

Lists Books read so far this year:
Conrad's Fate and The Dark Lord of Derkholm, both by Diana Wynne Jones
Things done today:
Tidied and organised my belly dancing clothing/costumes ... including putting aside what I'll need tomorrow when classes restart Put together a simple make-up bag for my New Year's Resolution to get more comfortable with wearing make-up Made leftovers from yesterday into a casserole/pie (currently cooking so this is a mixed result, it could taste disgusting) Tidied some papers from the side Hung my new necklaces (bought Friday) on the light switch ready to wear
Still to do:
Put all my clean clothes away (yeah, this one is pretty much a permanent To Do) Refill the bird feeders (again!) Answer a few LJ comments (seriously, only a few, I'm impressed with me so far at keeping up with these) *In theory* I have one or two cook and freeze dishes to make, but I'm not sure I'll get them done today Have a bath, shave relevant bits, and really deep condition my hair Burn some CDs for Sprog Update iTunes and Fox-the-iPod

HP rec: Until We Meet Again, by Hollycomb (Harry/Teddy) Until We Meet Again: part 1, part 2, by Hollycomb ##Harry/Teddy, NC-17, novella. Summary: Harry Potter, now considered a dangerous loner by Wizarding society, has financially provided for Teddy Lupin for the boy's entire life. Emotionally, however, he has been completely unavailable, until the summer before Teddy's final year at Hogwarts, when Teddy finally connects with his remote benefactor. Warnings: EWE. This is my absolutely favourite next gen fic now. Yes, I do realise that this is not the first time I said it. I know I said something like this two times about another fic of Hollycomb's, too. And it will happen again in the future. But for now, this is how much in love I am with this story. Terribly in love. This is, like, my ideal next gen crossgen fic. Right after finishing it, I thought that I wished I had read it in the fest while it had been anon and become all excited about an unknown new author. But then I thought, no way I wouldn't recognise Hollycomb's writing. Nobody writes post-war and next gen fics as she does. In one word... well, I nearly said 'unhappy' but that's not true. I can't find a one-word definition. I think I can't find a three-word one either. Hollycomb's future is usually less than happy, or not ideal. Or not as ideal or fictionalised as we are used to seeing in HP fics featuring epilogue generation. Her characters are a bit (or not a bit) broken, a bit (or a lot) fucked-up, and that and the tone of her writing made the stories sound very real. But that doesn't make them unhappy. Harry lives in a large mansion in Northumberland. Alone. With only Kreacher for assistance. Well, basically, Teddy lives there too, only he's in Hogwarts all year long and when he isn't, Harry is barely ever home, travelling on some mysterious and vaguely sinister business of his. They aren't family. They aren't even close because Harry doesn't let anyone close to himself. And it's not that Teddy minds. Only then he does, sort of. I loved how Harry always seemed larger than life to Teddy and how the author underlines it with his physical description: how large his hands or his clothes are for Teddy. I also absolutely loved details. This is what always works best for me. My mind needs something to catch, to visualise and remember: what Teddy picks off Harry's plate and how he does it (and that scene at all), the owl that delivers Harry's last letter and how it's introduced, how Teddy tries to envision his domestic future, and many more. I would love to say more but I'm still pretty overwhelmed and very, very happy that I've read this story. Run, don't walk! |

Out Of Bounds progress.... Okay. I've got everything written except the skating scenes themselves.
Of course, those are the hard parts. Including John's long program.
Oh, God.
Whatever possessed me to suggest dinner with WG's niece tonight? Oh well. It's been slated since before Christmas.

Next Thursday night My husband and I plan on heading over to Barnes and Nobles and seeing if the Anchorage Go club is still meeting there. We've already bought our first set through amazon.com so I figured it doesn't hurt to see what happening. :)
Okay I didn't do anything tonight but watch more Hikaru No Go. I'd really forgotten just how good this show is and what's really neat is my husband is enjoying it and wants to play Go too. :) |

Clarification and cell division. Just to clarify ... ... I have roughly thirty scenes of Out Of Bounds yet to post. It's that I have ten seven more scenes left to write. Funny how one scene begats two scenes, and so on, eh? I'm back in school on January 5th, so it's gotta be done this weekened. Tap-tap-tappity, tap, tap, tap.... Eroica rec from Yuletide2007 The Beat That My Heart Skipped (Sounded Like This), by Livia #Dorian/Klaus, PG-13, 4600 words. "You'd think a queer like you wouldn't care to use blackmail as much as you do," Klaus remarked. I had to go and look what other Eroica fics this author wrote after this year Ylutide's one (see rec here). How did I miss the last year's? This story was harsher than most Eroica fics I've read and I liked it, especially that Livia didn't make it in any way melodramatic or even pointlessly dramatic. It explores a what if: what if Klaus really secretly wanted Eroica but couldn't cave in to his advances because of Eroica's own nature that makes him a pretty ruthless individual for whom nothing is too low if it makes him closer to his goals? The story is very vivid. I enjoyed it a lot. |
