[05 Aug 2007|08:05am] |
Found the DoA fic lurking in the mail rack, of all places. I need to stop leaving things around. Fic is not as complete as I thought it might be, which is depressing. I thought I'd written more, but no, mostly set up and no movement. Bleh. Still, more than nothing, which is what I had previously.
I should be doing something other than link-surfing, but I have e-mail to get through and my brain is FULLS...I need to redo my list of when things are due and priorities. Should be randomly... fun?

[24 Jul 2007|08:43pm] |
I remember - I really truly do - sitting on the sofa and working on the Dead or Alive fic that I owe out for VGY over on eljay. Which is why, for the life of me, I CANNOT find it. I have found notebooks I don't remember owning which contain strange parts of fics I don't remember writing but really should finish. I've found amazing drafts and long-forgotten prose.
I have not, though, found anything resembling a DoA fic. Thankfully I have a decent memory for these things and can re-write without too much trouble. ^_^
I need to write this SIV fic anyway. It's going to suck. I've tried it a dozen times and every single time... suck.

Augh! Not having Eljay available is KEEEELING me. I just suddenly felt the urge to go re-read one of the Calinthrell fics and... where it is? I didn't dream it, did I? Is it on Sweetie's computer? Is it in e-mail?
I think it's on Eljay, which seems to be down. And for some stupid, stupid stupid reason, it's not on my website. AUGH!

| In which Kalloway is horrified... |
[04 Nov 2006|08:44am] |
I've been ordereing my import games from Play-Asia for the last few months, happily revelling in the global economy in general and my ability to buy import games from around the world. The region-free status of the PSP when it comes to games has always been one of my... favourite things that I'm positive they're going to take away. Sony, I mean.
On a somewhat unrelated note, I've been promised a Wonderswan for Christmas. For the 98% of you going 'Wonderswan?', it was a Japan-only handheld game system released by Bandai. Square, amongst others, supported it heavily and it has a strong back catalogue of anime-themed games. Since the last of the 'Swans appeared in 2003 or so, it isn't a common thing to find on gaming sites.
With Livejournal down, I find myself without my comprehensive list of import game shops and start trying to go from memory, as ordering from ToysnJoys is still not high on my list of pleasurable activities.
And I remember Lik-Sang, who always seemed to have the neatest stuff but never quite what I was after at the moment. I was going to get my yellow PS2 controller from them, actually, until I found one at the mall... *sweatdrop*
Only to find that Sony has put Lik-Sang out of business for selling PSPs. I can't quite believe it's all as black and white as what Lik-Sang claims, but... I'm constantly disgusted with Sony for other reasons, like their policy on North American PSP ports (seriously, just let the ports come out - sell some systems by having some damned decent games for it).
But if Sony is trying to restrict the worldwide movement of PSPs? What's next - an upgrade that adds a region lock? I can't say it's entirely unlikely.
If that happens, I'll definitely mourn for a bit. Then use it as an excuse to get this.
I should be working on my NaNo, not looking up BL games. Not that anyone is watching.
ETA: Oh, TaiChara, look!

And yet, things just keep on stayin' the same...
Accomplishments for the year...
I left FanFicRants. Over both the bashing of Yaoiville and also a friend who may not be perfect but didn't deserve to be called out over a 'first fic' that was a gift for someone. It had nothing to do with getting a beautiful mention for my Riku/Mickey fic (which sadly is flocked and I'll have to have Synthie join just so I can access it. *cries*) - I'm still proud of that.
Actually, there's this grumpy-looking-Mickey shirt at work right now and, well, I'm going to buy one ASAP and write something along the lines of 'Riku's Boyfriend!' with an arrow... Yes, really. Will wear it to Yaoicon. Either people will know or they won't, but no one believed me about the gratuitous Mickey/DiZ stuff either until they played the game for themselves. "I'm not seeing it, I'm not seeing it, oh GODS YOU WERE TELLING THE TRUTH!"
Trying to finish original stuff this month. Want at least one new book to sell at Yaoicon. By next year, maybe, I'd like to be able to go in on a fanhallway table with someone/a few people. Books from me, whatever from other people. Hahaha, I know I'm posting this in my JF, but is anybody in?
I'm still very proud of OneDeadBunny.

| I like smut. I suppose I should apologize. |
[11 Dec 2005|05:17pm] |
I'm not exactly sure why I haven't just abandoned FanFicRants all together. I'm trying to do my Annual Smut Month and yeah... For as much as I like the snark and generally agree with what most of what people are saying, in a way it also feels a bit like the reason I hated any sort of Lit class in school - 'There are many ways to view Character Q, but for the final exam, mine is the only right one.'
No, that doesn't work for me. Not at all.
I'd like to think that I've gotten to know these characters, even if they aren't my own. I trust them to behave naturally as I spread them on virtual paper.
And I trust my friends and readers to yell loudly if I fuck up.
/end transmission. I should be off writing smut.

So I have a new fandom. It's not nearly so stupid as some of my other fandoms (for few things can equal the idiocy that seems to be the StarFox/Kingdom Hearts/insert-any-fucking-thing-here fandom), which means it has already been divided into three groups:
1. People who become mutual friends, whose work we mutually fawn over.
2. People who I've pissed off or have pissed me off. This group is surprisingly low, but that's potentially because I've attempted to tread lightly for once.
3. People who are spaced out in another part of the fandom, such as the awful-Mary-Sue-fiery-furnace writers, who are oblivious to my ignoring of them.
It's also an ENGLISH VIDEO GAME FANDOM which takes a whole lot of the 'they changed it in the translation/they're a couple in the J-version/etc.' out of the whole equasion. So yes, the main characters seem to have an ambiguously (ha!) gay relationship. Other characters flame like a propane torch. And it's all completely canon, no arguements possible.
It's great. *happy sniffle*
Also, the characters are not traditionally 'prettee'. Which is even better. Because while not being bishounen, they're still very sexy and have actual personalities which are well-developed and in-depth.
It's really nice. This isn't even a pissed off rant - this is a happy rant. May you all get your own Legacy-of-Kain-like fandom for your very own!

| Upset Now. |

I know this thing has a readership of zero, but I need to get this off my chest.
I created KinkSquickWrite (on LJ) as a writer's community, not a fanfiction community. Fanfiction is more than welcome, as is original fiction. I know some people only write one or the other and I don't want to scare either faction off.
So yesterday, when I was told that I should make it fanfiction only because, um, no one reads original fiction since there's too much to explain.
How the fucking hell does anyone get into a new fandom then, if they're too fucking anal-retentive to seek out anything new because, y'know, there's too much they'll have to try to understand?!
Time to bang my head on the wall, methinks.

I ran into an arguement over canon in someone's LJ and instead of posting my views in that poor stranger's LJ, I figured I'd come here, to my rant-space.
The reason I read/write/like fanfiction is because it's a story about a character I like for one reason or another. Since most of my fandoms are for one-shot video games, obviously I end up lacking in more stories for that character that come straight from the source. So off I go to the world of fanfiction.
I am not a canon-whore. I am okay with character growth, interpretation, etc. But I won't read anything that strikes me as blatantly OoC.
And it happens. I know I write it on occasion (and I'm embarrassed), I know everyone does. It's just that if it isn't acknowledged, it's a gross oversight IMHO. A fanfiction writer should know their fandom well enough to know when they're doing a poor job.
Some of my friends/acquaintences/etc. write horridly OoC stuff. Sometimes I casually mention it, sometimes I beat them over the head. I don't like them any less as interesting people because of it, they just know I won't read their work.
Call me an elitist asshat if you'd like. I'm just picky about what I put into my brain because fanfiction is one of the few things in life where I get that option.
I'm sure I had a better rant, but lobster leftovers for breakfast distracted me.

Even worse than the ones who ask for the next chapter of a one-shot are the ones who don't seem to get what 'humor' is and how to apply it to said story.
If I took ridiculously clichéd but damned silly Mary Sue fic 'This Is Not Making Sense' seriously, I wouldn't still have it on ff.n.
I should probably take it down anyway before I get yet another confused review for it. And I should delete a few other things, too.
Back to my mantra: I have my own archive for a reason. I have my own archive...
People seem to miss the humor there, too. Am I really that obtuse?

How fucking daft can people get, anyway?
If it says its a one-shot and honestly has *nowhere* else to go, why the hell would you leave a comment asking for an update? Are you ignorant as to the meaning of "Part 1/1"? Should I add into my author's notes that what you see is all you get?
I don't get it. I guess it's my fault for posting to ff.n, anyway.

| Cid, meet Vincent. |
[01 Feb 2004|08:35pm] |
I like FFVII. I like a multitude of pairings for the game. I dislike a multitude of the authors and attitudes that are prevalent in the fandom.
One of the more 'common' shounen ai pairings is Cid & Vincent in either combination. I personally don't see either as constant top or bottom, so any references to Cid/Vinnie are just because it's alphabetical order and the way it is in my head.
I left the Cid/Vinnie mailing list because it had degenerated to drunken rambling and people oblivious to headings, spellcheck, and betas.
Not that there was anything really good there before. And I do like the pairing - there are some excellent stories for the pairing that I read again and again (and again) when I need my fix. However, the list was just ickly. I refuse to read through dreck that MSWord or Spellcheck.com could easily help make into something readable.
That and authors are prone to writing fanon Vincent - either a blood-thirsty vampire or a whiny uke. *bangs head on monitor*
He's a man. A hired thug killer! Who has at least canonly liked a girl a whole lot. There's no excuse for writing him as anything less than that.
And well-explained vampirism isn't too bad, but suddenly rushing into Vinnie's bloodlust without further comment is just bad characterization. Vinnie seems to be rather alarmed at his 'powers' - he manages to keep them in check. He seems to be the type who would forgo sex as opposed to risking *anyone's* lives.
I bet being called 'Vinnie' would annoy him. Which is probably why I do it. Actually, I just tend to super-typo 'Vincent' on this new keyboard and am trying to sound educated on my first try.

I just left a pair of Y!Groups. I'm a huge fan of mailing lists as an effective way to discuss topic-at-hand. I like them because they're more specific than message boards and they tend to have a reasonably sane membership. Most of the time. No list is perfect however.
The lists I left were a Vagrant Story fiction group and the Xenogears/Xenosaga yaoi list. I'm sort of on the edges of both fandoms and since the lists weren't offering up much and my interest is waning... I figure I can always rejoin later, anyway.
I like active, on-topic mailing lists. I like lists with a healthy supply of things to think about. I like lists with intellegent members. These are few and far between.
There seems to be no set way to have a list like this.
The amount of members has nothing to do with it. I'm on lists with 900+ members (actually, I mod one of those) and if there's a post or two every week, it's amazing. Sometimes the lists with six members will have a wonderful bit of banter for a week or two, but with those, the six of us know each other and it has degenerated to us talking about our cats by the end of the week.
Any topic gets talked out eventually. If a group is really specific, such as one pairing, there really are only so many things to do with it. After that it feels like we've had the conversation before. Checking the archives, we have! And it ended in a flame-war the last time too (pairing debate - never ask on a multi-pairing list 'what's your fave pairing?').
Know when to leave.
That's key. The second you realize that the group isn't what you're after, get out of there. Don't look back. If a group gets bad, leaving is a viable option. If a group gets stupid, chances are that its a permanent thing.
Speaking of leaving, I think I want a burrito.
I could chatter for days about good/bad MLs. Especially Kingdom Hearts MLs.

This is for all of you who HATE fanfiction.net.
Don't whine to me. Do something about it.
Be the change you want to see on ff.n.
If you don't like the content, write something yourself and post it. Encourage other writers you like to do so as well. The more good content on the site, the better. Heck, raising the standard may even discourage the badfic writers until they either go away or take the time to hone their craft.
If you don't like the content, leave reviews. Don't flame, but instead inform the writer how you feel about the story and tell them they could be doing so much better.
If you don't like the content, remember there are rules that authors need to follow. ff.n's ToS is easily available and it's surprising how many things are violations. Don't be afraid to report people. They'll never know who the responsible one was. Consider it your civic duty or something.
If you don't like reviews like 'OMG Right More!', start to leave longer, honest reviews. Any good author will respect ConCrit. Maybe you'll help start a trend.
Don't worry about the entire site, just pick a fandom and start there.
Don't be afraid of author retaliation. It's easy to get a second ff.n account (just another e-mail). As long as you don't insult the author, it's not a violation (so far as I know) to say just how poor the writing/plot/characterization is.
Pass the word along to anyone else you know that's fed up with ff.n.
I'm off to do my daily goal of *five* reasonable reviews. I know it isn't much, but it's a start. Start with me.

The subject line is from a Hangovers song. But it fits.
I will not apologize for writing a little fic that I really like. I will not apologize for it being an odd pairing that borders on disturbing. I will not apologize for rambling about it since it's been a really long time since I've liked anything I've written quite so much as this.
Oh yeah, and I have no sympathy for people who write poor characterization and then get called out on it. Because I can't stand it either. I can't stand people who are incapable of writing canon characters, in-character, in the canon universe. Sure, a/u and a/t fics can be cool, but some grasp of canon is necessary even just as a jumping block. Grabbing names and faces and writing them to whims isn't fanfiction. It's shit.
And that was today's incoherent babblings. Thanks.

I like feedback. I like reviews. Heck, I like being told I misplaced a comma in the seventh sentence of the tenth paragraph.
What I hate is getting nothing whatsoever.
I've sent a combined total of two different stories to five mailing lists (three of which are smaller, for the record) within the last couple days.
What have I gotten back? Nothing. An empty mailbox.
So now I'm curious - Did both stories suck? I know I really wasn't huge on one of them, but still... one person via AIM who read it on my site liked it.
And the other was sent to about 900 people. Maybe, you know, none of them have checked their e-mail yet for the day.
Or are, you know, speechless at my command of the language.
Let me know when the sarcasm gets too thick to wade through.
I think it's called 'feed'back for a reason. I would like to be fed. I am guilty as charged.
Be it positive or negative, I think reviews can be useful. A well-thought-out review will help me grow as an author.
And I don't just want my fic-ego stroked, I want to improve.
