I picked up the Dark Materials trilogy, and I'm on the second book now. I suppose I was inspired because I've heard it mentioned frequently and generally positively, and, of course, there is that Harmonian icon promoting Lyra and Will as a couple. I'm on book two now, and there was one moment that really struck me. I think Lyra is an ESTP, and Will an INFJ (which is an entertaining mix). Lyra and Will are in our world, and they meet each other on a bench after Lyra speaks with a "scholar." Will spends a great deal of time devoted to worrying about staying under the radar, so when Lyra stands up and talks to two cops, he has an outburst of RAGE, and he and Lyra argue. But Lyra HAD been staying under the radar - she just had a different way of doing it, a very E way. Whereas Will tried to avoid people, Lyra would approach them to misdirect their gaze. Two ways of accomplishing the same thing, essentially. It was really interesting to me to watch them think the other one was going about things the wrong way, and even more so, think the other one wasn't taking things seriously. Huge conflict in ways of interpreting the world, and lots of inability to see the world in a light that may not come naturally. After that, accusing each other of not taking things seriously because they can't find another explanation for each other's "wrong" behavior. Rock on.
And, um, I just completely ignored all of the witches and angels and symbolism and talked about a scene with two characters on a bench. Go figure. ^^;
