I generally use my Myspace account now, but I had to put this one on Journalfen too. I just ran into this article. It's on bird IQ, and which birds are the most intelligent. This is one line from the article (bold mine):

"The crows, the jays, that kind of bird - the corvidae - are the tops; then the falcons are second, the hawks the herons and the woodpecker rank quite high."

I shall now use that as proof that Herons are smarter than Harmonians!

(I'm kidding, of course.
Sugarquill vs Portkey

I spend virtually no time on Sugarquill. In fact, I find my OTP's fandom pretty dull. I didn't even register for the forums until a few months ago, and I've been aware of them for several years. I love R/Hr in canon, but... Portkey, on the other hand, amuses me endlessly. The layout is prettier, and there is so much more of that wonderful ranting and raving that I enjoy so much.

Portkey doesn't have a general Harry Potter forum that includes everything like Sugarquill does. However, the general HP forum on Sugarquill has a large amount of HBP-influenced stuff, so I figured it was all right to compare to Portkey's general HBP forum.

Here are the top 18 topics on Sugarquill:

Sirius Black
The Dead Dog
Replies: 8

Lily And Snape
Two brilliant Potion makers, or one?
126

Severus Snape
The Everlasting Debate: Thread V
222

Lupin And Tonx
505

Dates And Ages
Because we're still confused
154

Everyone Is Related!
Family Relationships
163

The Movies - Gof And Others
Thread III
308

Ginny Weasley
REALLY in the spotlight
441

Loose Ends
Questions that remain unanswered
336

Peter Pettigrew
The lurking rat
58

Hey Baby, What's Your Sign?
Birthdays and their significance
311

Harry
You know, the main character
349

Dumbledore
412

The Cave
pondering all that happened there
71

Oops!
Man, was I wrong!
111

Poll: He's The Hairy-handed Gent Who Ran Amuck In Kent...
Or Is He?
There is a thread on Portkey called "A Study of Shippers" in which a few shippers are thinking of asking Harry Potter shippers in general some questions such as :

Are your parents still married to each other?
Yes

Have you ever been in a relationship where you frequently argued with your partner?
No

Have you ever had your heart broken?
Not by a romantic relationship

What is the highest level of education you have received?
I have a B.A.

What was your favourite subject in highschool?
Geography

What is your favourite non HP book?
The Lord of the Rings, though the Slayers novels are a pretty close second. ;)

Name one characteristic that you believe is essential in a long term partner?
Just one? Sheesh. For me? I guess I'd ultimately have to go with the partner having a good heart. I'd prefer a little more than that, but at least with that basis I wouldn't end up with a sociopath.
In general, I think that it depends on the individual so much that I can't make a judgement.

I guess as far as the classic view of the opposing side as young, stupid, and inexperienced goes, I don't fit the mark, and I don't think that should be surprising at all. As interesting as these kinds of surveys are, in my experience 'shippers are 'shippers. As groups, 'shippers who take the time to fill out surveys are pretty similar to each other. I imagine nothing would come of it.

There are some words you can search fanfiction.net with that are pretty much guaranteed to give you a fic with which to enjoy a nice WTF. I used "angel" to get a fic that is one of the more WTF-worthy fics I've seen on the site. It's a creative fic, but apart from the names of the characters, if she was trying to hit the Harry Potter world she aimed about three universes too far to the left.

The summary is: In a world where angels and demons fought, an angel and a demon meet, and from the encounter sprouts a forbidden contract that threatens to end all being. Will the lovers achieve a flower to bloom in the scorching desert? Or will they fail? destroying everything, even their lives? DMHP... SLASH. Get it?

Bad news.

He only stood at the height of 5'6", and had the creamiest skin and the scent of vanilla. The color of his eyes mesmerized all angels who dared to look upon them

melting their brains and giving Harry an army of zombies.

Draco was 6'5", and although his black armor concealed his body, it was quite obvious that his body was well-built and lean. His icy mercury eyes shined with demise, his nose perfect, and his thin pink lips demanded sexual authority and lust.

Talented lips.

Draco lied on his bed, tossing and turning under the black silk sheets.

He bartends in the dark, too.

Harry was the forbidden fruit, the forbidden fire, and the forbidden ecstacy.

It's hard work being all those things at once.

His entire body was reflecting the pale moonlight

What is Harry, a mirror?

'No one messes up Pansy Parkinson's sex life. Draco WILL be mine once more!'

I love this cheese line in the middle of this mess of purple prose.

Soft raven hair framing the perfect face, Bright emerald eyes, creamy skin, cherry red lips, it was him.

Who? Oh, right - radioactive Harry.

Not knowing what to do, Harry simply landed himself on the other side of the branch, as light as a butterfly landing itself on a flower.

I see him surrounded by sparkles and painted into a kiddie poster for a little girl's room.

"My name's Harry... Harry Potter. I'm only 10 months old, and you're the first non-angel I've ever seen!"

Draco's a pedophile!! Then again, so is everyone else in this fic since just about everyone who sees Harry falls in love with him. >.>

Harry stuck his arm out to Draco.
"Will you be my friend, Draco?"

It's a kiddie movie with a porn slant.

He closed his eyes... and thought about the small boy-angel. His creamy skin, his bright green eyes, his pouty lips, his lithe body, and of course those bright green wings... sometimes, Draco marvelled at his ability to keep his maniacal libido in check in front of Harry.

Pedophile!

I'm always trying to figure out what to do with my journals since I find talking about my life very dull, and I never seem to get around to writing long essays on...anything. I've finally decided what I'm going to try, at least for a while. I wander the internet most every night and find all kinds of crazy things. I figure I'll set them here for posterity. I'm leaving off names and places to protect the sensitive, but these are real quotes (and my comments on them.) ;)

I just want the seventh book to be out and then for better or worse we know. We know once and for all if H/Hr will be or not and we know once and for all what kind of person JKR really is.

JKR is a Sith Lord.

I really hope that HBP was one great big red herring to make sure that the ending really has the twist that writers everywhere try to achieve.

Yes, Harry kissing Hermione instead of Ginny. Harry and Hermione have Tru Luv! Harry and Ginny got their love out of a Cracker Jacks box. :(

What did you say? "Voldemort?" Who's that?

H/hr will happen in book 7. I'm sure of it. Because there couldn't be any other reason for JKR to give us such a deep and meaningful relationship between them just for her to go with Ron and him go with Ginny.

Oh, I dunno...maybe FRIENDSHIP? Platonic love, even? I know, I'm thinkin' crazy thoughts.

If it's not Harry and Hermione in the end, what's the point of the whole HP books then?

I love it when people just come right out and say it. :)

If Harry sees Hermione kissing Ron or someone else, I'd want him to feel more.

Man, when I'm skimming I can misread things in weird ways. I read that one first as "If Harry kisses Ron, I'd want him to feel more." For a split second I thought: Why does she want Harry/Ron? Isn't this a H/Hr forum?

If love is going to save Harry....it needs to be profound, don't you think? Not just the love of friends and adopted Weasley family.

Pff, yeah. Friends and family are nothin'.

She still puts Harry before the needs of Ron. Something that Herons just don't see.

I see it. Because, you know, VOLDEMORT.

It has to be someone, IMO, that he's willing to sacrifice everything for...and not just his "saving people thing". That's too cliche.

Because the hero finding someone he is willing to sacrifice everything for HAS NEVER HAPPENED BEFORE IN THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD.

(I'm going to give a little nod here to Lina Inverse from Slayers.)

After HBP I really fell apart for a while and ever since it has been a battle every day to maintain my faith not just in that type of relationship

I actually feel sorrow for people like this. As far as I can tell, these people put part of their identity into an uncertain detail, into something happening or not happening. That's extremely destructive. I'd like to help people like this, but I honestly don't know that there is a way. Your belief in something (for example here, a belief in a good relationship) does not depend on a detail. You should only take what you see as inspiration, and then apply the inspiration, not the detail, to your world.

I picked up the Dark Materials trilogy, and I'm on the second book now. I suppose I was inspired because I've heard it mentioned frequently and generally positively, and, of course, there is that Harmonian icon promoting Lyra and Will as a couple. I'm on book two now, and there was one moment that really struck me. I think Lyra is an ESTP, and Will an INFJ (which is an entertaining mix). Lyra and Will are in our world, and they meet each other on a bench after Lyra speaks with a "scholar." Will spends a great deal of time devoted to worrying about staying under the radar, so when Lyra stands up and talks to two cops, he has an outburst of RAGE, and he and Lyra argue. But Lyra HAD been staying under the radar - she just had a different way of doing it, a very E way. Whereas Will tried to avoid people, Lyra would approach them to misdirect their gaze. Two ways of accomplishing the same thing, essentially. It was really interesting to me to watch them think the other one was going about things the wrong way, and even more so, think the other one wasn't taking things seriously. Huge conflict in ways of interpreting the world, and lots of inability to see the world in a light that may not come naturally. After that, accusing each other of not taking things seriously because they can't find another explanation for each other's "wrong" behavior. Rock on.

And, um, I just completely ignored all of the witches and angels and symbolism and talked about a scene with two characters on a bench. Go figure. ^^;

I miss the 'ship debates.

I was having a lot of fun debating couples before HBP came out, and I was almost disappointed that characters had finally been matched up pretty clearly, even for Harmonians. Little did I know, the internet was set to explode and give me an onslaught of a different kind of entertainment. That's been fun and good, but I'm beginning to miss having those determined Harmonians around that cause me to analyze and re-analyze what I think and how I should say it. That was fun!

I've seen some threads on Portkey from people (like Obsidian Warlock) who are beginning to argue that H/Hr is still inevitable. It seems like they are at least convincing some people. I think it would be fun if they manage to convince enough people that H/Hr is still a contender so that new life could be breathed back into the arguments. Of course, you always have to be careful what you wish for, right?

And how come the words I'm always looking for in my posts for the "mood" section are never an option?

I've been reading Fandom Wank for a very long time (and even begging friends to post reports for me on occasion - namely the EQ2 Name Nazi report and the R/Hr Lack of American Education report. Good times.) Now that I have an account, I'll probably continue to say very little. Yay.

The name Kalypsi is taken from my mithra on FFXI. Mithra are cat-girls, and the mischeivous and seductive thing works for them, so I considered "Calypso." That sounds a bit dramatic, though, and I wanted to change it into something that sounded cuter. Later I found out that kalypsi is an actual word... Ah, well. As for the "cat" tagged onto the end of my name, would you believe it? Kalypsi was already taken! /shock I decided to add the cat because, well, a mithra is a cat. I'm creative like that.
