09:40 pm - What I saved from the wanky DD thread on the Haven
(This is from my LJ. I saved some of the quotes in the thread, but not all of it. Damn!)

(ETA: I need to give credit where credit is due. This wank is courtesy of [info]rubytramp, who linked it at the bottom of my f_w thread yesterday. But it so deserves its own entry!)

OMFG, there's another HILARIOUS XF wank a-brewing!

This morning, in the Haven DD folder, someone linked (now a dead link) an article listing the Top 10 Most and Least Annoying Entities, as compiled by AmIAnnoying.com.

From the article:
Top 10 most annoying: Adolf Hitler, Ally Hilfiger, Jacques Chirac, Israel, Jesse Jackson, Tom Daschle, David Duchovny, Michael Jackson, Britney Spears and Jillian Barberie.

Top 10 least annoying: Jesus Christ, Kiefer Sutherland, God, Ralph Fiennes, Amber Benson, Leonardo DiCaprio, Gillian Anderson, Robert Patrick, Christina Aguilera and Marg Helgenberger.

As you can imagine, this did not go over well at the Haven. )

Sweet God, it is funny watching these people getting their undies into a bundle over DD vs. GA. And I LOVE how everyone blames "the snoggers", although no one really knows anyone who is a snogger and no one seems to know where they might hang out, but clearly they seem to think there are hundreds of them, all with nothing to do but vote for DD as Most Annoying.

(Question: so, if I vote for DD in that poll, does that make me a snogger? *g*)

Best line of the thread: There are hundreds of stupid lists like this on the Internet ("The Worst Dressed", "The Least Marketable", and so on) - nobody gives a damn about them, but for the Havenite quoted above it's as good a pretext as any to offer some gratuitous venom. It seems to me we must all look very stupid to any non-X-Phile Internauts who happen to browse this, ehem, forum.

Yes, you do, dear, yes you do.

09:43 am - Wingfic!
So, I wrote a snippet of Wing!fic for our dear [info]snacky's birthday, and since I never would have heard of the crazy genre if not for DL_A and JF, I thought I should probably post here as well as in my LJ.

Hope you enjoy!

Hobbits aren't the only ones who can unexpectedly sprout some wings -- it can happen to FBI Assistant Directors too! )

Happy Birthday, snacky!

08:00 pm - Codes??
Hey, what happened to the link on the userpage that would get you to the JF codes? Someone took me up on my offer of a code, and now I can't find them to give to them.

Help!

10:01 am - Musings on a slippery slope
Been doing some thinking about the whole Domlijah phenomenon, and why the hell I even care about it. Feel free to skip on by; I expect that some of what I have to say might offend some folks.

First, a disclaimer about my feelings toward RPF )

What this has to do with Domlijah and the Tinhats )

Okay, I'm rambling. But it's my journal, so who cares. No one will read this anyway. :)

What all this rambling means for me )

09:06 am - Show/Actor Fans versus Fanfiction Fans
NOTE: This was originally posted in my LJ. I've done some editing since then to clarify a few distinctions between groups, which were pointed out by some of the commenters on my LJ.

++++

Going a little meta today...

As most of you know, I've been hanging out watching the LOTRiPS Tinhats lately, and it's been an eye-opening -- and often infuriating -- experience. They're definitely lunatics, imho, but in the last couple of days, I've begun to realize they're not all that out-there and unusual as I originally assumed. (Hold off on pelting me with rotten tomatoes, I'm about to explain. *g*) For as much as they see themselves as a different breed of "Fan" (and, for many of them, they don't see themselves as Fans at all, not like the rest of us label ourselves), I think the assumptions they make and the structures they work within are VERY traditional to the expected fandom model. Now, I'm not as familiar with many fandoms so I can't use them as part of my theory, but I do know X-Files, and I posit that the Tinhats use several of the same structures that can be found in XF fandom.

Those parts are:
1. The distinction between Fans of the Show and Fans of Fanfic. )

2. The creation of Show Fanon and Usage of Traditional Storytelling Models )

3. The vitriolic hatred toward a Designated Villain )

I'm not claiming that my theories are absolute, and I'm not even sure if this phenomenon can be found in other fandoms. Can anyone from Buffy or Angel or TWW or another fandom let me know if they've seen similar divisions and archetypes? As a sociology geek, I'm curious to to know if this stuff goes further than just these two fandoms, or if it's just a fluke that I've stumbled into two groups that appear to act so similarly.

Finally, I feel the need to re-iterate the disclaimer that I do not consider all XF Show Fans or all LOTRiPS non-fanfiction writers as responsible for the negativity and in-fighting within their respective fandoms; there are plenty of people in each of those groups who don't cast RP or SA in such an evil light and who do think their Villainous role is absurd and unfounded. But for the Rabid Shippers (or True Believers, or whatever you want to call them), I do think that theory holds true, and I do very much believe that it has had major effects on the larger fandom.

And so endeth the meta musings for today. :)
