A New Year's Day shooting in which a subway police officer fired a deadly shot into the back of an unarmed man has the San Francisco Bay Area demanding answers as authorities appeal for patience.
Bay Area Rapid Transit spokesman Linton Johnson told CNN affiliate KTVU-TV in Oakland, California, that the officer is presumed innocent and described him as devastated.
Attorney John Burris called the shooting "unconscionable" and said he filed a $25 million claim with BART on Tuesday, alleging wrongful death and violation of civil rights by use of excessive force. BART has 45 days to respond, Burris said.
"It's a clear shooting in the back that should not have taken place," Burris said, characterizing the incident as a case of "overagressiveness by police."
They have two videos of the officers forcing this guy to the ground and shooting him, and they call it 'overagressiveness by the police'? That's the understatement of the year. What really gets me is that further down in the article it says that he was trying to calm everyone down and get them to do what the police said. |

From an artist whose vid was taken off Youtube: "As these woman from different TV shows pass a sword around throughout the video, they share collective power. They are fighting cultural Patriarchy on its own terms and they are doing it together. In light of the take-down notice, a new read of the video has emerged for me. I now see them as fighting out-dated copyright laws which have begun to prevent the free-flow of culture. Their swords are Fair Use."

| LJ, redux |
[Jan. 7th, 2009|03:26 pm] |
Is LJ being exceptionally robust, or is it just me? Vandalism by pissed-off ex-employees?
It's probably just me. But I can't get to LJstatus to find out for sure, so I thought I'd post here.
Sorry to bother everyone (okay, I'm not. Not really.)
Edited to add: Okay, not just me, then. On the one hand, Phew. On the other hand...I bet this has the potential to become epic. Even when it turns out to be just a hiccup.
Edited again to add: Now when LJ comes up it shows the following message: LiveJournal.com is currently unavailable due to emergency maintenance. Don't worry, this has nothing to do with our recent company layoffs! It's a technical problem, not a lack-of-personnel problem. Thank you for your patience.
Final edit: It's baa-ack. And I'm going to the bookstore. |

| Archiving: What's Your Interest? |
[Jan. 7th, 2009|11:03 am] |
I currently archive the communities that I work on/volunteer on: mac_vidding_101, veni_vidi_vids, and vidding. As a moderator/volunteer I can archive all posts along with all comments. I use LJ Archive on a broader number of communities - mainly because I love the search feature in LJ Archive to find stories or posts. LJ Archive does not allow me to download comments - but once I find the post I am looking for, I can go to the community to read the comments, I am testing the LJ download tool by Alexf LJ - it allows me to archive any community and - whether I am a moderator or not - allows me to download all comments. I am currently testing it on spnnewsletter and spnstoryfinders. My questions: 1. What communities out there would you archive - communities where you want/need the comments? Either from a fannish historical perspective or a useful perspective (ex. storyfinders communities where the comments have all the answers, food recipe communities where the recipes are in the comments, health communities where the responses have the health info.) 2. And second - what communities are you currently backing up? |

| Escapade - With Prices Like These..... |
[Jan. 6th, 2009|11:03 pm] |
|
Escapade is coming up in early March - slash fans, great panels, and did I mention fans? Anyhow sherrold posted that she was able to get $70 one way fares from Seattle! I am still on the fence (need to wait until I know about Vividcon and I need to find someone who can travel with me). but wheee! I am falling behind on both e-mail and blog reading - my laptop finally died and that cuts my surfing time in half. Plus, with the new Firefox update to 3.05, whenever I try to bookmark something with del.icio.us - Firefox crashes. Which means my newsletter-ing for vidding and EDS is falling behind. It takes forever for Firefox to rebuild itself. So many behinds, and not enough coverage! Obviously I will be looking at a low cost laptop replacement. I liked the Asus Eeeeee, but the touchpad/clicker was too stiff and hurt my easily detachable thumbs. So I am looking at the HP mini-notebook. I still have a fondness for Windows XP. |

I hope the three were enough.
I'm supposed to be free at 2pm, let's see what will go wrong! (Like, she'll sleep until 16h30 when I need to go in town this afternoon, for example.) |

| Back-Up, Archive & Preserve: LJ Backup Tools (PC Tools) |
[Jan. 6th, 2009|05:49 pm] |
|
1. LJ Archive - Backup and Search Tool All In One
Backup - You can use this tool to back up your own journal as well as any community that you are a member of AND where you have posting access. For your own journal (or a community that you moderate), it will back up the posts plus all the comments. If you are a community member and have posting access - you can backup all the posts, but not the comments. And last if you are just watching the community (ex veni_vidi_vids) and the moderators have not given posting access, you will not be able to backup anything Search - why would you want to backup a community if you can only backup the posts? Because LJ Archive also allows you to search those posts. This comes in very handy if you're in a storyfinder or technical community that does not use consistent tags. You can also use it to search your own journal. 2. Alex LJ Downloader This tool will allow any community member who has posting access to back up all community posts + community comments. It requires that you have Internet Explorer and you may need to be logged into your LJ account via Internet Explorer. Note: it stores the html files in your temp folder so you will have to do some hunting to find the folder and move it to a more accessible place. 3. LJ Book - Makes a PDF "Book" version of your own personal journal. 4. Other Back-Up Tools LJBackup BlogBackupOnline - offers limited support for LiveJournal blogs - yours, mine, ours - any blogs that are public. Also does a daily automated backup. It stores the data in a harder to read format (xml) but the data will be available for later use. LJ Migrate - and a roundup post of tools here My posts under lj tools and ljtools More amazing LJ tools and scrips here lj_nifty 5. Last, if you moderate a community - or know of someone who moderates a community please have them check to make certain their settings are enabled to allow people to make a backup. More here |

| Music Review: Gaslight Anthem, Down Down Down, Blackpool Lights, Chromeo, Ani DiFranco |
[Jan. 6th, 2009|07:37 pm] |
So Amazon had some free MP3s that I picked up yesterday. Of the five I downloaded, only one of them wasn't a total win. Not bad for free.
Gaslight Anthem: The '59 Sound This song sounds so much like a Bruce Springsteen sort of song. But unlike other songs (*cough*Sex on Fire*cough*) it doesn't feel like a bad cover. It's original enough that it doesn't irritate me. Instead it evokes the mood/sound/style of Springsteen in the best way. The lyrics are not exactly uplifting, but then neither were most of Springsteen's. It's a good song and it makes me interested in hearing more from them.
Down Down Down: Run Like Hell Nice piano, interesting falsetto moments. It feels nostalgic. It reminds me of, the mid-80s in a way. It's catchy and very listenable. The lyrics are a little emo, but that's hardly a criticism. I'm definitely going to be checking out more of there stuff.
Blackpool Lights (myspace link - warning for autoplay): This Town's Disaster Kind of reminds me of the Toadies. I like the sound and the sort of rough vocals. It's definitely a repeatable listen. I think they'd probably be pretty interesting live, because they sound like they're holding back slightly for the recording, just waiting to break free and really scream it out. Another I'm interested in checking out further.
Chromeo: Momma's Boy This is the one that disappointed me. The music and vocals are really enjoyable. Very catchy. But the lyrics bug me. They're not grossly offensive or anything, they just happen to irritate one of my personal issues. I still enjoy the song, but I can't listen to it often because of the button pressing thing. I'd have to see the lyrics before I listened to any of their other songs.
Ani DiFranco: Emancipated Minor And now for something completely different. I'd heard of Ani DiFranco before so I thought I'd give the song a listen. While not exactly upbeat musically, it is a good song and I'm interested in hearing more.
At the time of my posting, all of these are still free. |

| Unfunny ANN Double-Header Wank |
[Jan. 6th, 2009|03:58 pm] |
On Anime News Network's Chicks On Anime, this week's topic is censorship/editing in anime and manga. (Gee, this sure isn't going to cause wank at all.) The participants talk about different kinds of editing that North America and Japan do including nudity, violence, sexuality, smoking and alcohol, racism, AIDS, homophobia, loli/shota, and anything editors/publishers force the creators to change because they say so. It doesn't take long for the forum to become unfunny. (Ex-Answerman Zac is in there too. I am so surprised. Really.)
Speaking of censoring, ANN also posted about Kodomo no Jikan's second season promo being streamed. (Zac, the one blamed for KnJ being canceled for release in NA, in this one too.)
Edit: For anyone who wonders whether KnJ is pedo or not, all you have to do is look at the official merchandise. (Warning: Keep Brain and Eye Bleach near you, you'll need it. Oh God...) |
