[dalehead]
Waaay back in the day, a certain very famous aging British actor was performing in a Shakespeare play at the Everyman Theatre in Liverpool. Before one particular performance acid was taken, and said actor came off stage enthusing about his big monologue saying it was the first time he had connected with the words, could finally visualise them and totally experience them. He felt on top of the world. The director stopped him in his tracks and said: "Never fucking do that again".

The old fucker had stood in the middle of the stage for five minutes in total silence...

*giggles* That would make an interesting bit of backstory to write?!

I was listening to NPR on the way home from work today, and "Marketplace" of all things had a story about Twilight.

Specifically about how Twilight is, shockingly enough, causing a huge boom in the teen markets.

Nothing really new here, but I found it really funny to listen to the Marketplace reporters talk about Twilight like it's actually something important and novel.

S2 Layout Issues [Nov. 20th, 2008|04:46 pm]

system
Hi, Guys. I know a good many of the S2 themes are kinda hosed right now. Something changed with the LJ migration to their new data center. The Bloggish and Style Contest themes have their CSS hosted at LJ. That's by LJ's design, with how the code is distributed. The code is set to use LJ's CSS proxy to handle the access and display of the CSS settings. Since LJ's move, though, the CSS proxy has been kaput. But the CSS itself at LJ is still working. Until we can find a way around all this, a couple users have a way that you can use the Custom CSS in your customization area to get your layouts pretty damn close to the original for that layout and theme.

You'll enter two sets of code in that area. The first one would be the code from this URL:
http://stat.livejournal.com/sixhtml/themes/common/base-weblog.css

Just go there, copy it, and paste into the custom CSS box.

And the second set you enter will be from the direct CSS URL for your specific theme. You can locate this URL by viewing the source of your journal in your browser (View Source code). If you scroll down to the <link rel="stylesheet" section of the source code, you'll see the direct url to your theme's CSS at livejournal. Go there, copy that code, and paste it after the base-weblog.css code above. Make sure you have "No" selected to use the included base code (it's a dropdown), and that the URL field above the custom CSS box is empty. Click to save changes, and your theme will display much as it is supposed to. There is occasionally an element like a border that doesn't come through, but it's pretty close. As an example of the CSS URLs, this is the one for the Baby theme for the Bloggish layout: http://stat.livejournal.com/sixhtml/themes/lilia/theme-baby.css The CSS URLS will be start with http://stat.livejournal.com/sixhtml with the rest varying by theme and layout. I'll still be looking for an alternative to having to futz with custom CSS, but in the meantime, that method of applying the CSS will get your Bloggish and Style Contest journal themes put back together pretty well. Thanks, Robin

Fandom Next of Kin [Nov. 20th, 2008|12:31 pm]

fandom_lounge

[anarchicq]
So, OTW has a new policy, which when I first read about it, it sounded pretty damn cool.

B. Fannish next-of-kin

Registered archive users may designate a fannish next-of-kin. A next-of-kin agreement allows the transfer of content maintenance in the case of a user's permanent incapacitation or death.

Both parties to the agreement must be registered users of the Archive.

The Archive's role in this agreement is only to act as a facilitator. If the person designated as the fannish next-of-kin activates the agreement by sending a message to the Archive, the Archive will not do any independent investigation to confirm the necessity for the transfer.

A fannish next-of-kin agreement is confidential and accessible only by designated members of the archive team, who may only use it for purposes of implementing the agreement.

And then you get down to the FAQ...

12. What if my fannish next-of-kin decides s/he's tired of being my fannish next-of-kin?

13. What if I decide I don't like my fannish next-of-kin agreement?

14. What if my fannish next-of-kin does something I wouldn't like?

These are all perfectly valid questions...but could you IMAGINE IT?
Cut for hypothetical capslock of rage. )

Via Planned Parenthood:
You just can't trust them. After promising not to issue any new regulations after November 1, the Bush administration is poised to implement a rule that could allow individual health care providers to redefine abortion to include the most common forms of birth control -- and then refuse to provide these basic services.

A woman's ability to manage her own health care is at risk of being compromised by politics and ideology. Planned Parenthood is fighting back, before the administration implements this rule. The exam room is no place to play political games.

I just signed a message to President Bush urging him to keep his word and withdraw this disastrous proposal. Can you add your voice to this cause? Click here to sign the message: http://www.ppaction.org/campaign/hhsnov08_ppol?rk=61MCzL71H0wCW

Actually, now that I've given it a bit of thought, I have to say it might be a little unfair of me to compare this to the book since it's well-written, intentionally funny and displays a clear lack of taking itself seriously. Thomas Kinkade's 16 Guidelines for Making Stuff Suck

There are a lot of amusing things about this piece, which describes the guidelines that "Painter of Light" (TM) Thomas Kinkade laid out for the makers of his direct-to-video film The Christmas Cottage. ("Create an overall sense of soft edges, strive for a 'Barry Lyndon' look." Or, "Hidden details whenever possible, References to my children (from youngest to oldest as follows): Evie, Winsor, Chandler and Merritt. References to my anniversary date, the number 52, the number 82, and the number 5282 (for fun, notice how many times this appears in my major published works).") You can also boggle over the fact that somehow they got Peter goddamn O'Toole to work on this thing.

Of relevance to Fandom On the Internets, however, is the fact that this thing stars Jared Padalecki. One wonders what, if anything, the SPN fans make of it.

Except it doesn't say the part about how apparently people are happier to bail out a bunch of rich guys so it's easier for they themselves to go deeper into debt than they are to bail out a bunch of blue collar workers in an industry that's the fucking backbone of American manufacturing.

RAWR!!!

Via Racialicious, let's remember that hate crimes totally don't happen anymore and America is now a country that totally embraces differences, kk?

SAALT (South Asian Americans Leading Together) has been keeping track of an increase in xenophobic violence and rhetoric against South Asians in the weeks and months leading up to the 2008 elections, including assaults targeting immigrants who either supported or were perceived to support President-Elect Obama. Here are a few examples of recent violence against South Asians and other communities of color:

  • Hardwick, New Jersey — On November 6, 2008, an incident occurred in which Alina and Gary Grewal found a cross burned on their front lawn. The cross was wrapped in a congratulatory banner the family had made which read “President Obama, Victory ‘08″.
  • Carteret, New Jersey — On October 30, 2008, an incident occurred in which an elderly Sikh gentleman, Ajit Singh Chima, was punched and kicked repeatedly in the face, suffering fractures in his jaw and near his eyes. This occurred soon after a 10-year-old Sikh boy, Gagandeep Singh, was attacked on October 8, 2008, by an individual who pushed him to the ground and forcibly cut his hair.
  • Staten Island, New York — In early November, an incident occurred in which four white men beat a Liberian-American Muslim teenager, Ali Kamara, near his home. The attackers jumped out of a car and assaulted him with a baseball bat after shouting “Obama.”
  • Providence, Rhode Island — In September 2008, an incident occurred in which a Sikh-American man was accosted by an individual who said, “I have a gun in my car and since you are a hajii no one will care if I kill you. You know why the police won’t do anything? Because I got blond hair and blue eyes.” As the assailant left, he screamed, “F*** Arabs and F*** Obama.”

A white woman who carved a B into her own face made news for days, but crosses burned on people's lawns and a 10 year old boy having his hair forcibly cut? I guess that's for the back pages.

Hope this is okay, but someone on my LJ f-list won tickets to a Twilight advance screening, and here are some choice bits of her review of the movie that really rather amused me. (Don't want to flood her LJ)

Well, I did like the movie. It was a good movie. The book was way better, without a doubt better.

Well, I'm afraid already.

ETA 1: Thanks to [info]shallow_kid for pointing out the lion_lamb review thread.
ETA 1.5: Thanks to [info]sistercoyote for reminding me that Rotten Tomatoes should be getting their reviews in soon.
ETA: 2: Reviews just keep pouring in. Will continue adding as time allows.

Chicago-Tribune says fwoopy!
Ebert thinks it's a metaphor.
Variety lays the smackdown.
The V247 thinks KStew's face was stuck on "sulk".
Defamer thinks it'd appeal to fans of cheesy Sci-fi.
(Oh Sci-Fi network, why didn't you sign the deal first?)
Village Voice swoons, then falls asleep

MetroMix Chicago says "meh".
Even Twihards aren't loving it?! Inconceivable!
Entertainment Weekly tries to gush. Fails.
The San Francisco Chronicle thinks watching the movie will help you understand the hype. (except not)
Nolan's Pop Culture Review confuses the Cullens with beer.
The Naperville Sun wants to laugh at inopportune moments.
Fangst calls a duck a duck.
Gawker introduces us to the mental image of Twihards' groin tingles. (DO NOT WANT)
Slant wishes Edward and Bella would drop dead.
The Examiner wants to sic PETA on the Cullens.
A TwiMom takes issue with RPattz. World implodes.
Montreal Movies is disgusted
sortofbeautiful (homebase of Team Jacob) also has a review thread.
Jam snarks about Edward's Volvo.
The New York Times: Doing its damnest to legitimize OMG.
The AV Club thinks Twilight suffers from an identity crisis.
Montreal Gazette disagrees with Montreal Movies.
The Arizona Republic proves that Phoenix has taste. (And that's why SMeyer moved away)
FlickFilosopher sez: AMAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAZING MOVIE.
Eric Snider doesn't think Twlight is a vampire movie.
ScreenIt decides to count the use of "boobs" instead of pay attention.
Salon thinks Edward Cullen's possessed RPattz.
Oregon Live is split on the subject.
Houston Chronicle tries to convert fangirls to the light. Fails.
Montreal Mirror says it out loud: Twilight is terrible.

Wank has already started in (surprise!) Twilight Lexicon
And [info]ilya brings us a clip of SPARKLE MOTION.

ETA n+1: Thanks to everyone for making my inbox explode for linking to reviews, especially [info]mariem_1, who is a review finding machine. RT's at 43%.

ETA n+2: I'll update links one last time on Friday, then collapse in a post-Twilight heap. Someone send my inbox some first aid? (Dear Gmail, I love you)

ETA the last: If anyone else wants to compile the monumental amounts of wank in the reviews' comments (there's some good stuff at RT), please do.

So, any bets on when the wank level reaches 9000 and f_w will have to step in? (My moneys on Friday morning)

Gay is Bashing! [Nov. 18th, 2008|02:48 pm]

fandom_wank

[seca]
[Tags|, , ]

Bit small compared to the past couple of wanks but full of fangirl rage and lulz.

Some information to better understand the wank. In Japan there is an agency called Johnny's that is the major male idol agency in the country. Most of the most popular boy bands are signed with them, one of these groups is called NEWS.

A few days ago a German NEWS fan [info]chyco_chan decided to share scans from a German J-Pop magazine, that is notorious for poor research and nabbing whatever pictures they can find on the net for their magazine, as this time they snagged two pictures of NEWS/Kanjani8 member Ryo Nishikido for an article about gay life in Japan.

In the words of [info]chyco_chan:

BUT why??? Ryo = gay??? XDDDD
That's bashing XD (not even by us sou~ XD)

She then tries to get people to contact Johnny's about the magazine to tell them about it in the comments as she's afraid of being blamed if the magazine goes out of business.

And then cue the fangirl rage and lols at the article in the seven pages of comments this post has spawned.

There is someone that questions the 'calling someone gay=bashing' of the OP but then goes on about homoerotic the pictures are, despite them being, y'know solo shots.

And we have some minor capslocking of rage against other fangirls by bugattack.

Plus rage against the magazine as this would 'hurt' Ryo if he ever saw it from yamapilovergyal.

And many, many 'Poor Ryo' and 'Johnny's should sue' than it's worth counting.

THE MADNESS BEGINS [Nov. 18th, 2008|09:04 am]

Shrieking masses descend on L.A. for the 'Twilight' premiere
“We drove from the Bay Area yesterday, got in line at midnight last night, slept out here, took the day off work, and stood all day in order to fulfill a dream to take a picture or get an autograph from the stars,” enthused Cyndee Sauceda, 40, who works in a law office. “And if that doesn’t work out, it will all still be worth it if we get to touch Kellan Lutz or Robert Pattinson.”

Some of these need to be macro'd or something [Nov. 17th, 2008|09:34 pm]

Obama secretly goes online to troll Harmonian communities.
Obama does not buy into all this sparkly vampire bullshit. He does love Growing Up Cullen, though.
Obama always has a window open for Fandom Wank.
Obama has a secret service agent guarding his Boba Fett action figure. But he keeps the extra limited edition one in his safe.

On LJ's Metaquotes there has been quoted an extensive list (excerpted above) with 'fun fandom facts' about the president elect.

More from 2004. It's almost like I'm making sure these are in a nice safe place for future rp purposes.

You have greatly overestimated my writing prowess. [Nov. 17th, 2008|07:08 pm]

(If this doesn't belong here, I'll move it.)

Dear Friend/Fellow Fanfiction-writer,

Listen. I know you like my works of fanfiction. I know I should be flattered that you consider me to be "well-read, with an encyclopedia for a brain."

That said - no, I will not research or write your fic for you. There are two excellent tools I would like to refer you to in this case; Google and Wikipedia. They are your friends. They have served me quite well in the past, and I am certain that they can also be of great help to you as well.

No, arguments of "BUT UR SO WELL-READ AND SMRT!" won't float here. See, I do not have one thing that you really need in this case, which is a working knowledge of the French Language. No matter how SMRT you think I am, I have not yet had the opportunity to learn French, and I doubt I shall do so just to help you write your fanfiction. I'd like to for my own personal edification, but I'll get around to it in my own time, thank you very much. SMRT =/= polyglot. Sorry.

Another point that I would like to make is that a lot of the knowledge that you consider to be so encyclopedia-like in nature has come from researching my own fanfic. There were times when I needed to know just what phosphorus ammunition rounds do to the human body (it isn't pretty) or what the major constellations were called in ancient Mesopotamia. Again, I'd like to refer you to Wikipedia and Google. It's where I learned all this stuff.

I'm not trying to be a douche. This isn't information that I'm "withholding from you just to be mean." I really don't know French. I also think you're mistaking actual work, time, and effort for actual intelligence. Trust me, I could really use an upgrade in that respect.

Newsweek Speculates President-elect Is the Anti-Christ [Nov. 17th, 2008|12:59 pm]

No, really.

Writeth Lisa Miller for Newsweek: One of the winning lottery numbers in the president-elect's home state was 666— which, as everyone knows, is the sign of the Beast (also known as the Antichrist).

I'm not too familiar with Newsweek online, but if I'm reading the dating correctly, this will appear in the Nov. 24 print version.
