Beginning-of-semester stuff I have finished both syllabi and gotten them copied, ready for Monday. Have also gotten a few needed handouts prepped, though not yet printed. Still need to write up lesson plans for Monday, especially for the grad seminar (we may not go the full 2:45, but I don't want to cut it too short), and start working on things like updating lectures. Went through my work email and dealt with all of it but two messages. One of those is regarding the second article that I was hoping to get written last semester; sounds like I can have another month or two but I need to get back to the editor tomorrow, as soon as I figure out a genuine date-by-which-I-can-finish. Also an email from someone asking if I'd like to contribute to an encyclopedia; I've worked with her before, so I will probably say yes (it's also to be fairly short). Have arranged to have our subject librarian give a brief presentation in the upper-div class in a couple of weeks, which is both good in and of itself since they write a research paper, and also because it means I don't need to write a new lecture for that day. Sent off a recommendation for a student to one last grad program. Thank goodness for copy-and-paste. Went to the uni bookstore and they do have at least some copies of all the books for both classes. Yay. Whether it'll be enough, who knows. Also agreed to override a student into the upper-div class on Monday if no one has dropped by then (I have only once in my teaching career not had at least 1 or 2 students drop at some point in the semester, so allowing one extra person in is generally pretty safe...). So now I need to organize the desk a little, figure out what I need to haul home with me to work on over the weekend, and then do so. Oh, and check my student email too, as I'm still waiting to hear about that waitlist. *sighs* Current Mood: tired |

Catching up on the mail... I'd let the mail accumulate for a few days, and now have a couple of holiday cards to acknowledge - from mrowe (I think it's a little too early for Easter - it was here before Twelfth Night!), and from new_kid16. Thanks guys! So today I should: balance checkbooks, call to make eye exam appointment, call to make mechanic appointment, walk Juno, check work email, write syllabus for upper-div class (the grad syllabus is nearly finished, worked on that last night). I was going to go in to campus today but couldn't seem to wake up this morning, so will go tomorrow instead. Have not managed to start any ficlets. Hopefully on the commute tomorrow. Juno picspam I only had my cell phone to hand, but here is Juno with her nose pointed directly at Good Omens. I couldn't resist. Sorry for size/fuzziness! ( I love my dog ) |

Okay, brain It's time. Classes start in one week. You need to write syllabi, deal with work and school email, and do all the other necessary things for the beginning of the semester. You also need to write a dozen ficlets. While doing all the useful household stuff you did this weekend was good (cleaned both cars, vacuumed 2/3 of house, did some raking, belatedly pruned roses, did laundry, cooked like a mad cooking thing, took Juno to dog park, talked to maternal unit, etc.), it is, sadly, now time to WORK. Lazy day I really didn't do much at all today except take Juno to the dog park, read, and fool around online. I reposted a bunch of fic to various comms and tallied up all that I wrote in 2008, which was a LOT. Still have several reposts to do tomorrow from fests that have had reveals. angela_snape wrote me a darling Draco/Severus drabble: EnchainedOh, and I got two cards yesterday, one from r_grayjoy (I chortled madly at that one - I've definitely been in fandom too long!), and one from julifolo. Thank you! Current Mood: calm |

Year end fic stats and some links In 2008 I kept a spreadsheet to record all my fic-writing, which made it relatively easy to compile stats for the year. *is total geek* ( Verbosity, aka word counts )( Fandoms written )( Pairings and characters written, by fandom )( Links to the longer fics )Holy crap, but that's a lot of fic-writing. I'm trying to avoid signing up for fests this year (although there are one or two exceptions I may make as the year goes on, and I'm still participating in daily_deviant), which will likely reduce the 2009 total considerably. I'd like to get back into the habit of writing from my own inspiration, and perhaps even restart work on the original novel that I was contemplating a year ago. I have at least 8 WIPs, too. Yuletide reveal! I wrote " Principles," a story focused on Michael Godwin in Ellen Kushner's Swordspoint universe. I'll be reposting it on the fic comms and at Wellinghall soon. And thank you again to seren_ccd, who wrote me " Truly, He Hadn't," in the Fire and Hemlock universe by Diana Wynne Jones! |

Whee! Thanks! Okay, I tackled the enormous stack of mail. The great thing about going away over the winter holidays is that the accumulated mail includes good stuff, and not just bills and junk mail. So I found cards from (in alphabetical order): a_d_medievalist, ellid, geekmama, inell, jelazakazone, lesyeuxverts00, juniperus, mistressofrohan, ultreya, and westernredcedar. And there were bonuses - drabbles from juniperus and lesyeuxverts00, and westernredcedar sent the lovely necklace she made me for livelongnmarry. *feels very loved* AND lesyeuxverts00 also posted a fic(let) for me: Thrice Makes the Charm (Harry/Draco, R) -- really a classic H/D feel to it, EWE. Home, home again I like to be here when I can. *g* So, home safely, no real problems on the trip, the second flight was delayed by oh, 20-30 minutes was all. Juno has been rescued from the kennel and was extremely happy to see me; I went straight there from the airport and then came home, did a bit of unpacking, and then took her to the dog park. I wonder if she'd been given some exercise time in the morning or if her bath wore her out, because she was acting kind of tired at the park; not interacting much with the other dogs, not even running by herself or after the few balls I tried throwing from her. Stopped to buy groceries on the way home, put those away, have done some more unpacking, decided to just read for a while and am now catching up a bit on email and flist and so on. I need to write at least one more thank-you (wrote several on the plane) and pay a few bills, as those should go out in the mail tomorrow if possible. I'm going to make creamed tuna on biscuits for my dinner (comfort food for me, SO thinks it sounds revolting). I have a bunch of cards and mail to open, so will doubtless have many thanks to convey tomorrow for those! BTW - if you have posted fic for me, and I have rudely not replied, I almost certainly just haven't seen it, so please poke me in that case and I will hastily and with great embarrassment go read. Oh - and a reminder about the poll at 3fan_holidays - guess the most authors and I'll write you a ficlet. There have actually only been two people so far who've guessed... and you certainly need not be a participant to do so! Likewise if you want to hazard a guess about which might have been my Yuletide fic (come on, there were only 2426, of which one was mine *g*) I will write a ficlet for you if you are right! Fic-stuff! Many thanks to juniperus for indulging me with a delightful Percy/Severus ficlet: " O Tannenbalm" (adult) And, TA DA! emiime and I have today posted the 22nd and final installment in "Better the Instruction." I think a few of you may have been waiting for this to be completely posted to read it... so if that is the case, you are now safe. It's here on my IJ, here on my LJ, and here on Emi's IJ. If you want a printable version of the whole thing, you can get that at my home site, Wellinghall. Go to any of the chapters, and then look for the little printer icon at the top, with the Story link. If you click that link you'll get the whole thing in plain text. *whew* Okay, also links to specific fics (all drabbles except the BTI chapters) posted since the last time I did a round-up. There's a LOT - I fell way behind - so I'm putting the list behind a cut today. ( Here, have many drabbles etc.! ) Current Mood: accomplished |

A visit-y day The surprise party last night went well; MIL was surprised and a little annoyed at first I think, but she was very good-humored about it and as a party it went very well.
Brunch this morning with the children of MIL's SO and their SOs, plus one infant offspring, and then we went up to Bucks County to see the house that MIL and her SO are having built there. (Note to self - the acrophobia is getting worse. It was quite difficult to get across the pit that will become the front step on the narrow plank that was in place. Had to have someone reaching out to steady me both times. :-( )
SO was thinking to go to the art museum today, but decided there really wasn't time; normally it's closed Mondays but luckily will be open tomorrow because it's the holiday week, so I could go with him tomorrow. We might also go to the National Constitution Center which I'm more interested in. Not that I object to the art museum, just that art travels more, if that makes sense.
In a couple of hours we'll be off to dinner with SIL, T, and NeoG! Till then SO has gone off to a coffee shop, MIL and her SO are each watching a different program on tv, and I am (obviously) dinking online...

One more thing Borrowing the idea from florahart and emiime: I will commit teenyfic for you, if you correctly guess what yuletide fic I wrote - there was only one.
If you know because I told you, those guesses don't count, of course. *g*

Drive-by post Travel yesterday was very smooth - flights landed early, were only 2/3 full, just lovely. MIL was delighted to see us (this having been set up as a surprise). Today we went and saw Milk which I thought was excellent and can heartily recommend. I'm not especially a Sean Penn fan but he did a marvelous job; in fact all the acting was really good. I've also set up a poll here to guess the identities of the 3fan_holidays authors - inducement being that I will write a ficlet for whomever guesses the most correctly. There's wireless here so I will be able to be on occasionally, but am trying to be social and thus not keep my nose in the computer all the time. *g* Current Mood: good |
