I know exactly what you mean. Although characters I read about rarely strike me as completely asexual unless the author says so, I've had the experience of going to read fanfiction for a new fandom and thinking, "Huh? The fuck are they pairing her up with him for?"

But lone heroes in fantasy seem to escape pairing more often than lone heroines.
