I was reading that, and for one moment I thought t_boy was the same as t_guy in this post and was kind of bowled over by the contrast.
At the moment, I like the atmosphere of JF concerning this discussion a lot better than LJ, and t_boy in that post is one of the reasons.

Someone on my LJ f'list made a post which I very nearly took as "everyone freaking out about this is just too weak to stand up for themselves". Which was not the way it was intended, but I'd read so much discourse that I'd come to expect "Just tell them no, jeez" or "Wow, you're uptight".
...I'm kind of losing coherence about this.
What I don't get is how someone cannot understand why people would object to this. Disagree, sure, but saying "He's a lovely person, really!" or "You are just uptight and a prude" in response and then being shocked, just shocked, when other people don't immediately come around to their point of view is stupid.
If she were any more openminded, her brains would fall out.
Oh, wait. They already have.

Win!
So that's what the hollow knocking sound was when I wanted to beat her head in!
I always thought it was because her default icon bugged.
Oh well.
I have been wondering why it's so necessary to give the benefit of the doubt to the_ferret.
I think she made some comment I really disagreed with once a long time ago, and then I forgot the context, but remembered the name.
But the_ferret is important and popular and you shouldn't judge him by this one post! Except that he's somehow unpopular enough to have "forgotten" that outsiders could come and read a public post. In his very widely-linked and worth-reading LJ.
I think a lot of it is part of the "I like him, and thus he can't have said what you're saying he said! He didn't mean it!" thinking.
Bingo.
On a related note, what gets me is all this "Michigan cons are touch-friendly!" Right. Because it's not like we had -- AFAICT -- the first person banned from all (IIRC) MI sf cons for harassing women in the aptly-named Tom the Toad. That was back in the late 80s/early 90s. Haven't been to a local con in years, so I have no idea if he's still "active". Still, y'know?
My first experience with LARPing was having my character's mind controlled to believe she was naked, having that fact loudly announced to the room of folks (mostly men) that I had known for less than an hour, and then have various men comment on my body.
The organiser of this game, despite my explaining this to him multiple times, does not understand why I felt so awful afterwards. "it's not like you were really naked, after all."
There are some people in this world who are never going to get it. What impresses me, sincerely, is that so many folks argued very rationally and calmly with him.
I think she made some comment I really disagreed with once a long time ago
But she just wanted to make sure we understood the difference between the evil scientologists and the good scientologists! :(
That made me laugh, and I needed it. Thank you.
Mary wept. I have no idea why so many women are saying that theferret is just a harmless person, really really really! | |
