I've only read one other Lee book, White as Snow, and I attributed the extremely odd feeling I got from that one to the fact that it was a retelling of Snow White. But if it's an ordinary thing...that's intriguing. I kind of want to read more of her stuff now.
I think Dust might be the first book I've read actually set on a generation ship, though I've read enough about the trope to understand what's "supposed" to happen. And what you said about the characters is bang on. I believed in the awkward meetings, but not in the love affairs, the sibling relationships, or the parent/child relationships. Some of it is probably the fact that the story happens quickly and I never believe that characters can fall in love in a week anyway, but the majority of it seems to be a stiff distance from the characters- as if I were seeing all their emotions under glass. |
