It's an ordinary thing with Lee. It's not as noticable in her more "straight SF" books (Electric Forest, Day by Night, Sabella) but it's there.

If you can, find her her Flat Earth series, The Birthgrave and its two sequels. The former feels a lot like the Arabian Nights, and the latter... um. I can't say too much without spoiling the whole series, but she pulls off something you never see in fanfiction (not even darkfic writers have touched it, afaict), and makes it work.

I see by looking at their online catalog that my parents' local library has The Birthgrave series, and that no one has checked them out; I've put them on hold. Thanks for the recommendation!

Heh, knowing me I'll have to read the books and then have you explain what the unique thing was.
