What *could* actually make the LJ elections funny [May. 27th, 2008|02:12 pm]

-If someone conducted a poll of how many people changed their votes to ones against the people Aja recommended after reading her post.
-If people who are fans, but not fans in the way Aja defines it*, had their own candidates and a hope of winning.
-If more people remembered that not even Brad has been able to make the advisory board do squat.

Do you have more suggestions to make the elections funny? Share them here!

*Once again, "media fandom" rules all; people who are SFF fans, attend conventions, and run committees are not good enough to be "part of the Livejournal incarnation of fandom." You have to write fanfic, draw fanart, or vid, donchaknow. Those are the Holy Trinity.

I hate the way "fandom" discussions always seem to exclude huge numbers of people who would consider themselves in Fandom, should they be asked.

I guess I'm not a Fandom member, either. *sigh*

That irritates the shit out of me. And now we're learning that not only do you have to participate in certain activities and be female to be a real fan, you have to be on LJ, too.

Maybe I have ceased to be a real fan. *ponders*

I've managed to put my foot in my mouth more than once by confusing "LJ fandom" with "female fandom" with "fandom". But, you know, I *learn*.

(But I am really fascinated by the differences between "LJ Fandom" and "Female Fandom off LJ" and the way that social sites like LJ affect fandom and... yeah. I get kinda boring when I start talking about it. *grin*)

Ahaaha, what would also be amusing if there was a serious protest candidate.

Actually it's so vague what they're using the Advisory Board for. I hope we get more wank out of it, though.

IIRC there are people who are members of SF fandom running, but SF fandom hasn't rallied about them. (Perhaps because they are saner than Aja's sort of fandom?)

Yes! I would enjoy reading a wanky post from someone who was not connected to or protesting against fandom, actually.

Well, one of the disputed candidates (cambler, the one who now claims he's dropping out of the race because he heard someone received a death threat) is in SFF fandom, and he protested Aja calling him "not fannish." Aja replied that he's not really "part of the Livejournal incarnation of fandom." Presumably because he's not a squealing fangirl. I think he's slimy for other reasons, and I don't believe him about the death threat, but not being a true enough fan is a stupid objection.

I think the death threat info is legit, though, because other candidates have confirmed it. Since this was a communication from Marta, it should be fairly easy to confirm or deny.

Anyway, I really dislike how Aja is kind of.... insisting on this hardened definition of fandom-on-LJ, and kind of flattening it all out and insisting that we all have the same desires and opinions on LJ issues.

What's Aja done to piss people off so much that they'd switch votes like that? Just her falling out with Cassie Claire and her Inner Circle, or is there more that I haven't heard of and/or am forgetting?

On JF specifically, she hosted and then deleted the anonymous Panda meme that preceded lol_meme, because she claimed that sepiamagpie was somehow sekritly collecting IP addresses from the meme. A lot of people were pissed off that she deleted funny comments and Panda/Christian Bale porn after saying she wouldn't. She's also hosted other anonymous memes and locked them, and been involved in other wanks on LJ.

I think a lot of people were sympathetic to her because of the fallout from Cassie etc., but she wasted that pretty quickly.

cause she claimed that sepiamagpie was somehow sekritly collecting IP addresses from the meme.

Isn't that kinda impossible? Sep isn't an admin and doesn't have psychic ip-sensing mod powers.

I got irritated with Aja because she kept taking stands on fandom-related issues. This was okay with me, even if I didn't agree with them. She'd then go on to overdramatic extremes in defense of her latest stand, then back down, lock the posts, pretend it didn't happen, and even reverse her stance if people didn't immediately fall in line.

I mean, look at her massive fury with LJ that led to her video flounce. No one followed her off, and she came back so she could protest some other thing that LJ did to piss her off. I don't take what she does seriously, but, the more I see her do it, the more it irritates me.

I think that if I ever was so drunk inspired enough to burn a LJ tee shirt and share it via You Tube video for all of LJ-dom, even if I later decided to come back, I would do so all stealthy-like, slinking around and keeping a very low profile on any future LJ-admin related issues.

Aja, she is shame deficient. :(

I think if anything, people were sympathetic to Aja over the CC thing, and the accusations CC made towards her.

But Aja then did a lot of anonymemes and was wanky about it. Also, in the TeniPuri fandom she made herself quite unpopular in various ways. And then there was the shirt incident.

How did she make herself unpopular in TeniPuri fandom?

Someone I know in SPN fandom says it's about the anonymemes she's done. She would get very foamy at the mouth about it and wouldn't be able to explain what had actually happened, but I guess at least two turned into SEE HOW MUCH I CAN ANONYHATE ON PEOPLE and Aja was "shocked and dismayed" that it happened a second time too.

A modest proposal on identifying fans.

(Link)

1) They know what the acronyms FIJAGDH/FIAWOL, BNF and SMOF mean.

2) They've had post-con depression.

3) Have had the Librarian Assassination Squad target them for their huge fines.

and/or

Gotten recommendations from staff at the local bookstore of new books they might like as soon as they hit the racks.

All these criteria must be met. If not, the person is a pathetic wannabe and should stick to their squee! and Pixie Stix diet.

I have spoken!

Oh, it's not just me that the Librarian Assassination Squad was after? Now I remember why I don't get Library Cards right away... I've only been here a few months and WOW I have fines. Woe.

I hadn't been following this wank because I don't do LJ. However, I've been inspired! There's an organizational meeting for the local con in a week, and I'll go in and ask which of the organizers are Real Fans. (True, they might pull my panels, but I must do this FOR SCIENCE.) For my next trip, I'm calling up a friend who won an award from Locus for SF scholarship and telling her that her fan license has been revoked.

I love, love, love the idea that the fanfic writers I've known who gave up on the source comic/show/whatever because it contradicted their fanon are True Fans, but your average BNF isn't.

Actually, since we're totally talking about fandom-spaces, I'm really interested in the difference between vidding fen and non-vidding fen and how vidding is different in different spaces.

I mean, I watched a lot of AMVs - those *seem* to be male-dominated, and don't really seem to have much view to do anything but entertain.

When I started watching vids for other shows and movies, I was really fascinated by the way a lot of vids want to tell a story, or talk about issues in the show. My experiences here have been all female. So, we'll get vids like "Women's Work", "Origin Stories", and "Jack, or Aventures in Reading Against the Text", which really engage directly with the images in the show and treat images like they're just as important as character and dialog. I don't see this in a lot of fandom, and I'm not sure Aja and the OTW or whatever would count them as fen. I don't see a lot of support around vidding.

I could, of course, be putting my foot in my mouth again.

I think you do have something there about AMV vs. that school of vidding but I've seen very little meta on the subject.

I've seen the opposite, where vids that do tell a story are privileged in fandom and where the AMV-style vids aren't discussed or noted. They're not "subversive" or "transformative" or by women, and the women who make AMVs aren't real girls [/sarcasm].

Oh dear. I haven't seen that. :( Obviously women who make such videos are DELUSIONAL! and wasting their talents, yes. /sarcasm *hug*

I've seen some great discussion around the non-story vids, but I certainly see less of it, and I don't hang out much in Vidding Fandom. Likely the bulk of stuff I'm gonna see is gonna be the stuff that makes a big stir.

Can you tell me more about Vidding Fandom?
