Radio Trolls and Retro Ride [29 Aug 2003|11:07am]
[ mood | Blessed ]

I was listening to talk radio today, and got to hear the host play quite a convincing troll. It was actually pretty damn funny, and he got quite the reaction. Bill Cunningham opened the program with, "All of society's problems are due to women. Women act immoral, and drag men along the wrong paths. We men aren't responsible for anything we do, because we're stupid and gullible. It's all the fault of women." Needless to say, there was no lack of outraged callers after that little monologue. You could almost hear him smirking as he spoke to upset listeners, and happily held onto the "women are causing the downfall of civilization" view point. It's rare to see (rather, hear) a talk radio host successfully string along the audience like that. The only one I've heard pull it off for that long before was Chris Baker. Well trolled, Billy.

I have a new motorcycle, thanks to my parents coming through with a generous loan- huzzah! It's a 98' Honda Shadow Aero 1100- with a beautiful paint job, whitewall tires, and more retro cool than James Dean. I love it more than words can say (as does my husband). This lovely new bike is chained up to the porch steps at night, with a car sitting in front of it (to prevent anyone from being able to break the forks and roll away with it). You can't even see it from the street when it's parked, so hopefully the chances of this one getting stolen are slim.

No word on the motorcycle yet. Only 36% of stolen bikes are recovered, so I'm not keeping my hopes up. On the plus side, my parents might loan me the money to buy a new one, which would be amazing beyond words.

My mother-in-law was all set to loan the money, and even took my husband out to look at bikes- but then she called my father-in-law to let him know what happened. Understand that my in-laws have plenty of money in a savings account (like two or three times what a new bike would cost), and that this would be a loan, one to be paid back at 200$ per month. My father-in-law, after being told about the theft (and knowing his son would lose a fantastic job with benefits without a new form of transportation, stat), said, "Well. I guess he better find someone to borrow the money from." And then he refused to even talk to his son at all. My mom-in-law is devestated, as are my two brother-in-laws. They all thought that this would be no problem at all, and that we would have a new bike by tomorrow at the latest. But, my father-in-law controls the purse strings, and for some unknown reason has decided to keep an iron grip on them.

So, enter my parents. My folks are in a very bad situation financially, with my dad trying to get a job for the last few years (he just turned 61, so you can imagine how difficult that quest is). But after hearing what happened, my dad immediately said he'd go to a Honda shop today and do his best to get us a good motorcycle with a full two year warranty and full coverage insurance. Obviously, we'll be paying him back at 200$ a month, but still- they don't really have the money to do this, and yet volunteer without hesitation. Even if it all falls through, and my folks can't get the money together- they have further proven themselves to be two of the most generous people I've ever had the pleasure to know. Absolute saints, I tell you- and it makes me damn proud to know I come from such good and admirable people. If you raise a glass this week, give a bit of thanks that there are still such marvelous folks among us.

Sláinte!

"The Bible contains six admonishments to homosexuals and three hundred sixty-two admonishments to heterosexuals. That doesn't mean that God doesn't love heterosexuals. It's just that they need more supervision."

Theft. [21 Aug 2003|04:39am]
[ mood | *Snarl* ]

My motorcycle got stolen last night. For a one-vehicle-household, this is obviously v.v. bad. I would write more, but honestly I'm too upset to be coherent for more than a few sentences right now. Happy birthday to me.

Layers [20 Aug 2003|11:06am]
After watching Lain last night, I have come to the conclusion that stories with Many Layers of Deep just rock my socks. From directors like David Lynch and David Cronenberg to books such as the Dune series and Imajica- sometimes my taste in literature and film looks like pretentious bukkake.
Not everyone likes Many Layers of Deep, and I can understand that. Sometimes MLD just comes across as a garbled mess of philosophy, intellectual musings, or genre experimentation that never really goes anywhere (kind of like this post).

Games and Comics [20 Aug 2003|11:05am]
There are two Playstation 2 games on my "Must... buy... soon..." list right now. The first is Magic Pengel, a game that lets you actually draw the characters. Sort of like an oekaki rpg. The second is the .hack series, a quirky rpg I found out about by reading usr/bin/w00t. My birthday is quickly approaching, so it's likely I'll at least pick up Magic Pengel.

If you like webcomics, I have a few to recommend-
Something Positive
usr/bin/w00t
Queen of Wands
The Devil's Panties
Ghastly's Ghastly Comic (*Adult material!)
Sinfest
Sexy Losers (*Very Adult material!!)
Diesel Sweeties

Oh, and one for the HP fans- The Adventures of Chibi Snape!

Salutations! [20 Aug 2003|11:03am]
Being as I'm new around here, perhaps an introduction is in order. My name is LinLin- a nickname derived from my real name being somewhat similar to a well-known panda in Asia. Since I adore the fluffy, rotund creatures, and my body type is similar to that of a panda- the name fits. My interests run the gamut of extremes- from cute Care Bear merchandise to blood-and-gore scream queens of the silver screen. Scientific journals rest alongside children's books on my bookshelf. On most weighty issues, I am of two minds and tend to take a good amount of time deciding which side of the fence to stand on (and even then may switch sides often, due to additional research). All forms of satire, parody, and general cattiness hold a particular fascination for me- although I do try to focus that tendency in a constructive way (or at least well-marked area). Just about every genre of music has at least a few artists that catch my ear. Perhaps I was schizophrenic in a past life, or maybe just a little nuts in this one. Whatever the case or cause, that sums up the basics. See you at the next post.

Moving in. [20 Aug 2003|11:01am]
I've been wanting one of these for a while now, so it's very satisfying to finally have one (a Journal Fen account, that is). Right now I'm just having fun playing with the controls, a more substantive post will be made later.
