Dancing With The Stars

I'm in shock. I cannot believe they just sent home one of the two best dancers on the show. Shock.

I screamed "WHAT THE HELL?" aloud. I am STILL speechless.

I get SO PISSED OFF when crap like this happens. I almost stopped watching last season because of fucking Billy Ray Cyrus getting voted back week after week. I've been a fan since the beginning, been to the tour, got the t-shirt, so for me to not want watch the show is a BIG THING. Now I'm getting the same feeling here. I'm sticking around because I love Helio and Jennie, but if one of them leaves next week in lieu of Marie or Jane...

I yelled "WHAT...?!?" Couldn't even articulate past that. I like Jane, and she's done well. I was glad to see her get this far but seriously? She should have been the one going home. One thing that none of the judges commented on Monday night that I think they should have is that she did dance a jive. The music she danced to was not jive tempo, it was swing tempo -- and a relatively relaxed swing at that. Not even close to the challenge of a jive at jive tempo. [/rant about the music]

The only thing I can think of is that people voted for the ones they thought would be in jeopardy and simply didn't vote for the ones they thought were safe. Nothing else makes any sense at all. I totally believed the final would be Sabrina and Mel. I really did.

I agree, she or Marie should have gone home. I truly think Marie was saved from elimination by pity votes last week, and was fully expecting her to get the boot this week. The fact that she was announced as safe was a huge jolt.

And yes, Jane's dance wasn't a proper jive. Every dancer has a dance that doesn't suit them at all, and the jives is hers, but you're right, the music wasn't much help at all. The music this season has been -awful-. It rarely fits the type of dance they're trying to do, and I think that contributes a lot to bad performances- I mean, there's only so much the pros can do when they have to choreograph to a song that's totally inappropriate to the kind of dance they're trying to do. Cameron and Edyta's Paso impressed the hell out of me for the simple fact that they were able to do a Paso Doble to the Superman theme.

"Cameron and Edyta's Paso impressed the hell out of me for the simple fact that they were able to do a Paso Doble to the Superman theme."

And yet, that music was a better Paso (at least it was a march so the 'feel' was partially there) than the piece of "whatever that was" that Sabrina had to dance to...and she pulled off a Paso with all the styling. Personally? Had I been choosing the dance for that music, I'd have picked a foxtrot.

I keep telling people they're just lucky they're being spared my rants on the musical choices this season, hee! Whoever is picking it seems to have no clue that the music should enhance the dancing -- and that when the music supports the styling the performance will be even better.

I don't mind music rants, myself- my ma and I watch the show together and keep commenting on how awful and inappropriate it's been this season. I guess they're trying not to repeat anything they've used in the first 5 seasons, but good GRIEF, they're not even trying. And the funniest part is, it's the producers that pick the music- the pros and dancers are pretty much stuck with whatever they get. I think on occasion they get granted requests, but otherwise, what they get it what they've got.

Heh. I realize they can't do what happens in actual dance competition where the Paso music will be one of two selections and everyone knows it. But those two pieces of music have the accent/pose at exactly the same place so the choreogrphy can hit that pose and know it'll be there. But for these purposes I understand they aren't going to do that.

What irks me is that each dance has certain requirements and this year the producers don't seem to understand anything beyond "it's in 4/4 time unless it's a waltz and then it's 3/4 time." Getting it right seems accidental.

Jive and quickstep need to be energetic, tango and paso doble need to evoke passion and arrogance, waltz and foxtrot need to have flow. I'm almost at the point where I want to watch them dance with the sound muted. But then I wouldn't be able to rant about the stupid music choices. Hmmm... decisions. oh who am I kidding? Gotta rant!

I just got home and checked the results and ... Wow! I never expected that! I thought she had a really solid fanbase and she always, always danced well. ITA it should have been either Marie or Jane. I'm completely boggled. Guess I'm rooting for Jennie, Cameron and Mel now.

I still can't believe Mel got sent home. So much for getting all 10s. And I was looking forward to a Mel v Sabrina final. Phoo.

Mel v. Sabrina would have definitely had the two best dancers. I am worried now we'll get Marie v. Helio. After reading around LJ and Television without Pity, I can kind of understand why she was voted out. I don't agree with it, but an awful lot of people seem to consider her a ringer and think it was unfair she was there in the first place. And Monday's show kind of emphasized that with the clips of her dancing with her fellow Cheetahs. I enjoyed watching Sabrina. I thought she was having a great time, and learning a completely new type of dance, and I loved that she had a normal-sized body rather than being a stick.

I can kind of understand people thinking she was a ringer but if watching "So You Think You Can Dance" has shown me anything, it's that switching to an entirely new style of dance isn't easy even for those for whom dance is their life. As was shown in the criticism she got for her foxtrot -- that it was too hard and attacked and didn't have the softness and flow that the foxtrot requires. And I might agree if the top half of the competitors weren't right up there with her. She's good, she picks up the choreography quickly, but then so did I back when. And yes, it's been nice having a few ladies who look normal but still in great physical shape.

You know, I don't watch the show, but I dug up several performances on YouTube-- including all of Mel B's. I was shocked that they almost eliminated Mel after some really exceptional dancing.

These things are always popularity contests to some degree, but this is just ridiculous.

All I can think is the fan bases are stronger for some than I'd thought and a fair number of people voted for the ones they thought might be eliminated instead of the ones they wanted to have stay.
