Judge's Choice Round

First up: Mel & Maks with the cha cha. Excellent -- footwork, styling and body movement. Carrie Ann wants more excitement? Then try giving them cha cha music that's not so laid back -- the routine had all the content it needed and a faster or stronger cha cha would have showcased it very well. The 10 from Bruno was deserved.

Second: Marie and Jonathon. Samba. Good choice from the judges because you can't just come out and 'entertain' your way through it. There was almost no samba styling in the movements, and precious few actual samba steps in the choreography. Those steps that were there were awkward. The judges were correct that this dance would show her dance flaws and the scores were definitely deserved in my opinion.

Third: Helio and Julianne with jive. Cute, energetic, maybe not quite as crisply energetic as it might have been dance-wise with some sloppy feet, but he brought the personality along with a lot of content.

IMO, round one goes to Mel.

Free-style Round

Mel & Maks: Risky routine, well done. The lifts were clean and interesting, good humor. As far as the judges' critiques go, Len had a valid criticism when he said it was a little disjointed and didn't flow as well as it might have. But then putting together a routine like that with the risks involved is incredibly difficult. (And I liked Maks' little dig at Carrie Ann, hee!)

Marie & Jonathon: Well. Umm. Lots of lifts, but they were all very safe and standard ones, and she didn't even pull them all off. She brought her usual entertainment capability to this, but I don't think it was enough to cover the flaws. And for me, for a dancer to really pull off that 'off-balance' look, they need to have impeccable balance in the first place, and she doesn't. Agree with the scores again.

Helio & Julianne: That's what we've been waiting for. Excitement, energy, content. Loved the beginning. If you're going to evoke your real life, the race car driver opening totally beats acting like a doll for the entire routine. Loved this one!

Round two goes to Helio.

Who should win? Mel, by a tiny edge based on overall consistency of performance.

Who I won't mind winning? Helio who is a very close second anyway. Didn't have quite the overall consistency, but the last few weeks have been outstanding.

Whose win would be a travesty of justice in the dance world? Sanjaya Marie.

Who will win? Beats me. Marie made the finals, Wayne Newton made it to week 3 and Sabrina was sent home in week 6. And Marie has the deepest fanbase. So everyone needs to vote for Mel or Helio! (And I like Marie. She was just not the best).

*pets her "Vote Helio" badge* &hearts Words cannot express my love for Helio. Big, big, big smiles. :) He makes me smile, too.

If Marie wins I'm putting my goddamn foot through the TV, especially after her lackluster performances tonight. I'm completely with you, her scores were justified given her dancing. Her freestyle was just bizarre (and not in a good way), awful and wooden- I know they were going for the doll theme, but Bruno took the words right out of my mouth when he said that it was an idea that seemed good in concept, but shouldn't have been implemented into a dance.

My Jennie should've been here this week, not Marie. :( Or ideally Sabrina, but eh... Ma and I used four phone lines (our land line, plus three different cell phones) to try and vote for Helio but we had a lot of trouble getting in. He got all my online votes, though.

Is it wrong that I almost want to write Maks/Tom RPS after Maks kissed him?

Jennie absolutely should have been there (or at least losing out to someone with better skills that hers).

The doll theme could have worked with a far better dancer. It's that she didn't look like she was controlled in her off-balance movement, she just looked off-balance and sloppy. It can work -- look at Ray Bolger in The Wizard of Oz.

It took you until now to want to?

Oh, and did you notice that the Osmonds (especially Donny) were all pissed off that Marie wasn't getting praise heaped on her? Tough luck, people, you're not universally popular sry2say.

Hee! Yes! And how about Carrie Ann telling the Spice Girls to stop booing!

ITA with everything you've said here. I am concerned Marie is going to win because 1) that deep fanbase and 2) the judges were honest with her, and some of her fans will take that poorly and try to generate backlash votes. Fortunately with DWTS you only get limited votes, so they'll have to work harder in terms of rounding up voters to make it happen. If either Helio or Mel win, I'll be fine with it. My favorite was out last week, anyway.

One thing I will say sort of in Marie's favor - I think she is the one who derived the most benefit from being involved in this in terms of improving her body and physical capabilities. I hope she enjoyed it enough to continue dancing because it's obviously paid off for her healthwise. I don't like her interrupting and almost arguing with the judges, though. And I have to also add that the doll routine was totally Sanjayaish, and creeped me out.

I know, right? Jennie's the only dancer in the history of the series to have been asked to repeat her performance for the judges on results night then gotten eliminated anyway. It's bullshit that she didn't make it. Ideally, of course, it would've been Sabrina, Mel and Helio in the finals, but after Sabrina my next choice to go that far was Jennie.

I have never gotten into following a dancer as much as Jennie, and I've been a fan of the show since the beginning. She had heart and a good attitude, she took what the judges said to heart and worked to improve herself (unlike a lot of stars, who bitch, moan, and do the same mistakes over and over anyway). I was so proud of her when she got her 30 last week and got teary-eyed when she had to leave anyway. :(

I'll also be happy with either Mel or Helio. In a way it's just a question of who deserves to be best in class: the one who gets it from the start or the one who has a learning curve but totally gets it in the end? They both rocked.

Marie clearly had a great time, and the benefits to her health were, as you note, obvious. But I think she continually relied on her performing abilities to advance, and I don't think she worked at it as hard as Mel or Helio. Heh, I even found myself talking back at her talking back to the judges. "I make dolls!" "Yes, but you aren't one, and that was just bad!"

Funny how the repeated theme of "why isn't she off yet?" reminded me of Sanjaya.

I HATED HATED HATED Marie's routines, esp. the second one. It's as if her partner said "OK, Marie can't dance so let's just make that part of our routine". It was terrible.

I was disappointed in Mel's freestyle (missed her first one). It just wasn't "on", although I can't put my finger on what was missing.

Helio's freestyle rocked.

That said, I'm hoping Mel wins because I think she's the best overall dancer. But Helio's been impressive.

I'll be MAJORLY PISSED if Marie wins. Because, frankly? Had she not had the fanatic doll-fandom base and the Mormon vote, she'd have been gone weeks ago. Jenny and Jane were much better dancers and let's not talk about the cock-up that was voting off Sabrina

(YAY I was hoping you were going to talk about the show!)

Marie's routine was bad from concept to execution. I rather suspect that she was the one who wanted to do it. Y'know, big worldwide dollmaker. In case we didn't know. And Jonathan should have been able to tell her "bad idea. bad. bad. bad." But she's done well riding on her entertaining performances, so maybe he just gave up.

I think the problem with Mel's freestyle was that it was so ambitious with so much content including the truly risky lifts that they just didn't have time to smooth out the transitions. It's a lot of routine to perfect in a week, even if they hadn't been doing another dance as well. Mostly it was disjointed, which I suspect more time would have taken care of.

Every single week after Mark left I kept thinking this is the week when Marie leaves. It was like the constabulary in Pirates of Penzance! "But they don't GO!"

(I meant to do the last couple weeks but things got in the way).
