Now that I am back from warm places, I see it's time for the annual Christmas memeing. So...

24 Questions Christmas Quiz:

1. Wrapping paper or gift bags? Depends on the gift. Sometimes both. :-) I've been known to spend as much on the wrapping as on the gift. But I totally enjoy making them spiffy on the outside.

2. Real tree or artificial? I haven't had a real tree since I was about three. When the very first artificial trees came out (they were more like tinsel trees than the 'toilet brush' ones) my mom got one. With both my brother and me highly allergic to the real ones, she decided that the benefits of not being faced with two whiny kids with constantly running noses far outweighed the need for a real tree. For me, the 'scent of Christmas' is the old-fashioned bayberry candle.

3. When do you put up the tree? If one gets put up, it's sometime between Thanksgiving and Christmas. With two cats, both young, the last two years have had a tree with no ornaments, only lights.

4. When do you take it down? Easter eggs look awfully nice on the tree, don't you think? And those red, white and blue ribbons? They're good for Flag Day and Independence Day!

5. Do you like eggnog? I tried it once when I was very young, didn't like it, and am infinitely capable of carrying a lifetime grudge against foods I thought were icky as a kid, heh.

6. Favorite gift? I don't know that I could name a 'favorite gift ever.' My favorite overall type of gift to get is something totally frivolous and silly.

7. Doyou have a nativity scene? Yes, I do. The first one I got for myelf is in a pop-up book. Based on the 18th century Neapolitan creche at the Met. I also have the small one that's been in my family since forever.

8. Hardest person to buy for? People who won't drop any hints as to what they might like because they think it's somehow unmannerly. Over the years I've gotten used to this and they get the ubiquitous gift cards. Or the person who routinely thanks you for the gift and then proceeds to tell you about the bigger/better one they saw somewhere. But they aren't really 'hard to buy for', they're more 'hard to give to'.

9. Easiest person to buy for? My smallest nephew, who is four. At the moment, if it has Thomas the Tank Engine on it, it'll be good.

10. Worst Christmas gift you ever received? Can't remember getting a 'gee, how interesting, wherever did you find this' kind of gift. The funniest one was from my brother one year. He asked what I wanted. In my best breathless and excited six-year-old voice (I was in my mid-twenties), I told him "I want a Rainbow Brite and and and a Transformers and and and a Castle Greyskull and and and a Masters of the Universe Action Set and and..." (All the things being touted on Saturday morning). He got me a Rainbow Brite. After he went home, I looked at it and then at my mom. She said, "You wanted the Transformers, didn't you?" "Yes." What I learned? Even when I'm being facetious, make sure I put the right thing at the top of the list because you never know.

11. Mail or email Christmas cards? Mail, when I do them. Which is, sadly, not all that consistent. I have been known to make an e-card and post it in my journal.

12. Favorite Christmas Movie? Oh, lord. ALL of them! It's A Wondeful Life (1946). Miracle on 34th Street (1947). A Christmas Carol (1938-Reginal Owen) and (1951-Alistair Sim). A Christmas Story (1983). Holiday Inn (1942). White Christmas (1954). Going My Way (1944). Meet Me in St. Louis (1945). The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992). Nightmare Before Christmas (1993). Not to mention A Charlie Brown Christmas, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Emmet Otter's Jug-Band Christmas, Nestor the Long-Eared Donkey, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Frosty the Snowman and on and on and on

13. When do you start shopping for Christmas? Oddly enough, except for the smallest one (whose 'most favorite thing' can change over the course of months) I Christmas (and birthday) shop all year 'round. I have a 'presents box' that I put everything in. This way I get the things when I see them and stop wishing I had months later when the events come around.

14. Have you ever recycled agift? Not that I can think of.

15. Favorite thing to eat at Christmas? Mashed potatoes that don't have a shaker full of pepper dropped in them. (Yes, there's a story behind that. And I live to tell it. But you don't want me to bore you with it, do you?)

16. Clear lights or colored on the tree? On the tree, they have to be colored. And lots of them. On other things they can be more artsy.

17. Favorite Christmas Song? To sing? It Came Upon The Midngiht Clear. I like the lyrical quality of the music. To hear? The Hallelujah Chorus done well. Or the DairyMart radio commercial version of Carol of the Bells, done by a choir singing only "Moo moo moo moo. Moo moo moo moo..." That one never fails to make me smile. And I still like hearing the carols sung in Latin.

18. Travel for Christmas or stay home? Seems to change every year.

19. Can you name all of Santa's reindeer? Of course.

20. Angel on the tree top or a Star? I have both. (Is that a clue to multiple trees?) My favorite is a blown-glass star I found in a little store in Arlington, Virginia.

21.Open the presents Christmas Eve or morning? Oddly enough, as a child it was always Christmas morning. Presents didn't even appear before then. But by the time I was in high school, and my brother was a fireman, Christmas would happen when we could all be together. Sometimes it would be Christmas Eve, sometimes the day after, sometimes it would even be Christmas Day. Having everyone there was the most important thing.

22. Most annoying thing about this time of year? Ads. Who thinks that so many people will buy a Mercedes for Christmas that it warrants an advertising push? Though if anyone wants to buy me a Mercedes-Benz, all my friends have Porsches and I must make amends.

23. What I love most about Christmas? The shiny, the sparkly, playing my Music Box Christmas CDs, everywhere being all spiffed up.

24. What I love least about Christmas? Hmmm... having to surf around all the cable channels to find the movies and specials? It was so much easier when there were only three channels.

2. Wayne Newton stating his doctors told him not to dance and his suspicion that it was really because they'd seen the show.

6. 10 10 10 for Mel's mambo which is on tempo and danced on the correct beats (something that seems surprisingly difficult for many).

Judge's Choice Round

First up: Mel & Maks with the cha cha. Excellent -- footwork, styling and body movement. Carrie Ann wants more excitement? Then try giving them cha cha music that's not so laid back -- the routine had all the content it needed and a faster or stronger cha cha would have showcased it very well. The 10 from Bruno was deserved.

Second: Marie and Jonathon. Samba. Good choice from the judges because you can't just come out and 'entertain' your way through it. There was almost no samba styling in the movements, and precious few actual samba steps in the choreography. Those steps that were there were awkward. The judges were correct that this dance would show her dance flaws and the scores were definitely deserved in my opinion.

Third: Helio and Julianne with jive. Cute, energetic, maybe not quite as crisply energetic as it might have been dance-wise with some sloppy feet, but he brought the personality along with a lot of content.

IMO, round one goes to Mel.

Free-style Round

Mel & Maks: Risky routine, well done. The lifts were clean and interesting, good humor. As far as the judges' critiques go, Len had a valid criticism when he said it was a little disjointed and didn't flow as well as it might have. But then putting together a routine like that with the risks involved is incredibly difficult. (And I liked Maks' little dig at Carrie Ann, hee!)

Marie & Jonathon: Well. Umm. Lots of lifts, but they were all very safe and standard ones, and she didn't even pull them all off. She brought her usual entertainment capability to this, but I don't think it was enough to cover the flaws. And for me, for a dancer to really pull off that 'off-balance' look, they need to have impeccable balance in the first place, and she doesn't. Agree with the scores again.

Helio & Julianne: That's what we've been waiting for. Excitement, energy, content. Loved the beginning. If you're going to evoke your real life, the race car driver opening totally beats acting like a doll for the entire routine. Loved this one!

Round two goes to Helio.

Who should win? Mel, by a tiny edge based on overall consistency of performance.

Who I won't mind winning? Helio who is a very close second anyway. Didn't have quite the overall consistency, but the last few weeks have been outstanding.

Whose win would be a travesty of justice in the dance world? ~~Sanjaya~~ Marie.

Who will win? Beats me. Marie made the finals, Wayne Newton made it to week 3 and Sabrina was sent home in week 6. And Marie has the deepest fanbase. So everyone needs to vote for Mel or Helio! (And I like Marie. She was just not the best).

Music Rant of the Week

Dancing With the Stars music rant:

First round

Helio dancing tango to a swing. Means his tango was too bouncy, not nearly cat-like enough. Len complained about no heel leads? There aren't heel leads in swing. I think Carrie Ann has simply given up on the music supporting the styling. 9 8 8

Marie got to do her quickstep to the music that Jane should have had for her jive the week before. The good thing is that quickstep and jive are much the same tempo and so the style wasn't compromised. 10 9 9

Mel B's foxtrot music wasn't as bad as it might have been but it still didn't support the styling of the foxtrot as much as it could have done. Carrie Ann's comment about the step size being a little out-of-sync with her being pulled along is a symptom of this. The dance is meant to be stretched out on the floor and the music was supporting a shorter, bouncier style. 8 8 8

Jane's quickstep to Walk The Line is again not only Too Damn Slow but it's also not in any way a quickstep! It's a two-step. Compare it to Marie dancing quickstep to jive tempo and once again, Jane isn't being pushed. And Len was absolutely right about the total lack of body contact. And Jane isn't going to be exciting us as long as she keeps getting music that's too slow for the dance she's doing. It makes the dance feel leaden. 8 8 8

Jennie's Viennese Waltz is... 3/4 time! And it flows which supports the style. Someone must have delegated finding this music. 8 8 9

Cameron's quickstep music was, well, fast. But while it did elicit some bounce it didn't support the glide that's also supposed to be there. Hence Len not liking the style. It was only partway there. 8 8 8

Second round

Helio! Wow! I knew it was samba before I looked! Finally, an excellent music selection! And look what happens when the music strongly supports what the dancers are doing! 9 9 9

And again! Marie's cha cha is to music with a strong cha cha rhythm! She really sells what she's doing but they're right -- not quite enough content. 8 8 8

Mel B and the *checks closed captioning* paso doble? What paso doble? Nothing, absolutely nothing, in that to pull out the paso styling. Nothing. Compliments to Mel for dancing a strong paso regardless. 10 10 10

And again, a real cha cha. Not the liveliest one, it's more relaxed, and that's not what Jane needed. She's had too many that were just a hair too slow to be exciting. She needed lively. 8 9 9

Jennie got a nice rumba, too. Good tempo, has the back beat feel that helps pull out the styling. For myself, I would have liked a little more change-up in the styling -- most of her moves were quick and staccato and I would have liked more mix of slow stretched-out moves with the quick ones. 9 9 10

Cameron's jive was a little slow but not so it felt too slow. And he had some difficult choreography to do which was helped by it being just a little slow, since it gave his longer legs the chance to get to full stretch in some of those moves. 9 9 9

Who should be going home tomorrow: Jane. I like her and she dances well, but not in the same league as the ones who are left. Had the music this week and last not been below tempo I think that would have been much more apparent.

Who will be going home: after last week, it's anyone's guess.

I put the two together first of all because I just find it funny and secondly because I like that kind of subtle continuity.

Hee! This came directly from a semi-rant I posted several years ago that was primarily inspired by people posting on FW and prefacing their posts with the lines that cycle at the top of the icon, and tangentially by those who never quite figured out that there were multiple wank comms. It helped me to refrain from screaming at them. I don't have to use it as much now that clairvoyantwank has become the second-most frequently used wank comm. Now I can just make my snarky comments in the user info. LOL! The image came from an ad for Clue.

HistoryOfBallroom

The icon is a bookend with my 'FutureOfBallroom' one. They're both more oriented to dance competition *points to icon* than dance in general, and while Fred Astaire & Ginger Rogers weren't competition dancers, they probably did more to -- Fred in particular -- bring ballroom dance to the public's attention. So they get the honor of being my History of Ballroom iconic images.

There was a Buffy the Vampire Slayer Philosophy Board that I ~~was addicted to~~ frequented when the show was on the air that assigned tongue-in-cheek titles to some of the frequent posters, and to some of us who helped out. As I was not precisely 'evil' (though that could be subject to some debate *g*), nor virtuous, I ended up with this rather confused appellation. And then I found the photo of Betti Page and it all came together.

"Poisoning Pigeons in the Park" is the title of a Tom Lehrer song, and the image is Lehrer ~~poisoning~~ feeding the pigeons, of course. I love his satirical wit and snark.

One of the seven Endless from Neil Gaiman's Sandman series (though not created by Gaiman), he is chained to the book that has all things past, present and future written in it. He is also blind and continuously walks the maze in his gardens. He is the least volatile of the Endless, and appears to be the one to direct them when they all meet.

Ani-Splooge

I made this icon in honor of the ability to ignore all reality around the time of the infamous (heh) Crystalwank, which coincided with some amazing tinhatted Domlijah wank.

Ani-Sacrifice

The dialogue is paraphrased from a scene in Angel season 5 when he has taken over as CEO of the evil law firm Wolfram & Hart with the intention of using its power for good. He attempts to use his phone to get a simple cup of coffee:

He presses a button on his phone.
Angel (to phone): Um...can I get a cup of coffee or something?
Automated Voice: You have reached ritual sacrifice. For goats, press one, or say "goats."

The screencaps with the goats are taken from a scene in season 2 when Angel finds himself in a room (in a building owned by W&H) full of goats that are to be sacrificed.

I put the two together first of all because I just find it funny and secondly because I like that kind of subtle continuity.

TheSinOfNoraMoran

The image is cropped from the movie poster for "The Sin of Nora Moran". The movie itself is from 1933, with a current review in the New York Times. As so often happens, the poster completely misdirects the viewer, but frankly I just liked the image as an image. I can be shallow.

Dream

Dream is another of the Endless -- and the title character -- from Neil Gaimon's Sandman series. He is also known as Morpheus, and the land/space/dimension he inhabits and rules is that of dreams. The land is comprised of that which he imagines and creates, and he allows specific others to dwell there. He's an intriguing character because while we learn what he does and things he has affected and get some small understanding of the scope of his powers, we never seem to know him. But I like him because of all the Endless he is kindest to his little sister Delirium, even if the kindness comes from his own expedience.

Metropolis

The 1927 film Metropolis is one of the truly classic silent films with both story and presentation holding up even today. It is, however, not a movie that one can get a real feel for by reading about, it needs to be seen -- as a silent film its power is in the visual images and doesn't translate effectively to print. There are a number of theatrical posters for it and of course DVD covers, but the one I like best is not the most frequently seen, but the one I cropped my icon from, with the worker bent under the weight of supporting the city.

There's painting and closet stuffs and changing out the lighting and more painting and welding and all sorts of things happening that are all good and necessary and mean that one day things may actually be moved from the current house to the new house, but at the moment mean busy and perhaps a touch achy.

There's Callie (the long-haired calico) and her brother Big Black. And our volunteer kitten from this sunmmer. Who is still referred to as 'kitten' because we haven't come up with a name yet. Very interesting coat, though -- the markings are very much like those of Ty (in my icon) only instead of the lavender-gray, he's more tortoise-shell. I bribe them all shamelessly with treats.

Philosophizing:

These images are on the back cover of "The Days Are Just Packed: A Calvin & Hobbes Collection" and I kept looking at them thinking they could sequence into a fairly smooth dance sequence. So one day I scanned them in, cleaned up the scan and played with it. (And having my attention drawn to the icon was good -- I have no idea how it lost its animation, but I set it to rights).

He's Watching You:

This came from a WWII US Military Poster and I liked the rather creepy image. I think it applies today as well, but not necessarily the way it was intended.

Nosferatu:

This was the central image from a theater poster for the Majestic Theater. At the time the cost was 20¢ for children and 35¢ for adults. I have a couple versions of this classic silent film, one with a rather good added soundtrack and one with a soundtrack that seemed to think the way to enhance what should be the creepiest scenes was to have the percussion section play "boom chicka boom chicka boom chicka ..." They were wrong.

VisitGreece:

This was cropped from a vintage travel poster urging one to "Visitez la Grece en auto". I just thought it was pretty.

QueenKong:

When the remake of King Kong came out there was a discussion that took a turn toward "There should be a Queen Kong." I applied my google-fu and found a 1976 spoof called "Queen Kong: The Liberated Lady Gorilla" and this poster, complete with perky gorilla boobies.

Delirium:

She's my favorite of the Endless from Gaiman's Sandman series. It always intrigued me that she began as Delight and became Delirium. I like her simpilicity and directness. And she's just cute with her rainbow hair.

SleepReading:

This was cropped from a cover of Liberty magazine (January 18, 1930 -- as far as I can tell). It really speaks to the way I read. Hee!

My fortune cookie told me that a good deed would make me happy.

I was all "Yay!!" and then I realized I was supposed to do the good deed.

ETA: And my dark chocolate wrapper is telling me to listen to my heart and dance, which could be awkward.
