Art imitating life [Jan. 8th, 2009|12:33 pm]

mister_terrific
Noticed it's been awhile since I posted anything. To recap briefly:

1) I'm helping my brother manage our mother's care. We're working to get her into a rehab facility for her broken shoulder. My job is to a) call people to coordinate this and b) listen while my brother vents.

2) I move into the new apartment this weekend. I am packing like a madman.

On that related note, I had a wee accident this morning concerning a piece of paper that had my new address written upon it and a visit to the bathroom. I will spare you the details. But thanks to my new anti-depressant, I find I'm writing again, to be precise a Eureka tale called "The Hunting of the Stark", in which our intrepid characters attempt to recover an outside-of-time Nathan. I wrote the following this morning just to freak The Redhead out:

Is LJ being exceptionally robust, or is it just me?  Vandalism by pissed-off ex-employees?

It's probably just me.  But I can't get to LJstatus to find out for sure, so I thought I'd post here.

Sorry to bother everyone (okay, I'm not.  Not really.)

Edited to add:  Okay, not just me, then.  On the one hand, Phew.  On the other hand...I bet this has the potential to become epic.  Even when it turns out to be just a hiccup.

Edited again to add:  Now when LJ comes up it shows the following message:  LiveJournal.com is currently unavailable due to emergency maintenance. Don't worry, this has nothing to do with our recent company layoffs! It's a technical problem, not a lack-of-personnel problem.

Thank you for your patience.

Final edit:  It's baa-ack.  And I'm going to the bookstore.

So Transfan, I Herd U Liek Pedo Bear? [Jan. 6th, 2009|12:54 pm]

fandom_wank

[dogbite12]
[Tags|, , , , , , , , , , ]

Transformers comic book fandom wank.. Early this morning, it was about pedophilia.

My doppelgänger from the IDW fan forum Skwege learned that he had been accused of having sex with children by the IDW forum fantards on Transfans.net. Sprunkner is a real internet tough guy. Unfortunately, he made it quite easy to find his dox.

Skwege was not happy to find he'd been slandered as a pedo. So he calls (yes, as in calls
Sprunkner's landline) to tell him to take it down. No yelling, just something along the lines of "call me whatever you want but accusing me of child fucking is not cool."

What does Spencer (
Sprunkner's IRL name) do? He freaks out and hangs up!

That's right-he's a coward. So Skwege leaves him a voicemail:

"
Hi Spencer :

You like to make libelous accusations about people having sex with kids? That is really grown up of you. Oh wow, you live in Washington State as well? What a coincidence! Bellingham is only an hour from here.

It's not funny! I know little punks like you think they can run around all anonymous on the internet and think nothing can bite them in their ass. However let me tell you little man, you are going to retract your statement, and then apologize. Talking shit about someone is one thing, but making a disgusting and FOUL comment like that is libelous. I have the time, money, resources, and most importantly the fucking patience to see this through so don't toy with me little man
."

Then
Sprunkner has his wife (yes, someone actually agreed to marry him) respond. He doesn't have the balls to answer Skwege himself-he makes his wife call him back and tell him not to call. Unfortunately, Spencer posted her phone number and email as his contact information.

Some PMs get exchanged on the IDW forum and Sprunkner accuses Skwege of threatening him (although I doubt the police consider being asked to take down a post or telling someone you're suing them for slander are violations of any particular laws). He makes an announcement on Transfans.net, crying that Skwege is harassing his family and that he called the po-po on him.

Sprunkner did call the police and they in turn contact Skwege.

The result? The police are highly pissed off-at Sprunkner. Because this is much ado about comic books.

All this name calling and wank is over whether or not the comic book series All Hail Megatron is in continuity.

The police were not too happy about being called to mediate a dispute over Starscream's alt mode.

They lecture
Sprunkner and felt Skwege was somewhat justified. Skwege apologizes for dragging the wife into the mess because being accused of fucking children is serious business that involves the IRL banhammer.

The wank continues on Tranfan.net where
Sprunkner whines some more (I guess his wife made him sleep on the couch) and Skwege threatens to post a scan of the police report.

These fine examples of male adulthood continue to fight about giant robots. I believe Sprunkner's wife summed it up succinctly in an email to Skwege:
"This is a fight over made up robots-let it go."

Unfortunately, everyone ignores her.

Edit: I accept this is total fail. Need more recipes and fail macros, please.

Whoa, how many times are you going to reply defensively there, bucko?

I thought the new Doctor was going to be black. This Smith guy looks more like a foot than that Edward Cullen actor.

This has been a rather bad few days for me. On New Year's Day, feeding the dog, I pulled a neck muscle that still has a twinge now, and then drove two hours and a day early to my sister's place to help her bake a wedding cake for her bff.

Which meant no one was set to feed the dog and cat that evening and the following morning, as my parents were off in New Hampshire visiting relatives. And even though it was my own stupid fault and even though it was easily taken care of, I really wish somebody had said, "Wait. Why are you going to your sister's today?" because apparently everybody realized this except me, but when I (accidentally) changed the plan, they just accepted it in due course.

The next few days of making the wedding cake and the groom's cake were no issue, but then on Saturday night, just hours after getting home, I started vomiting everywhere and didn't stop until yesterday evening. My sister's bff's family all had the flu a few days before.

So, yeah, it could have been worse. I can be thankful that it wasn't my wedding that I was barfing around (the bride delayed her bachelorette party because she was so sick), and that I also wasn't barfing at my sister's place while we were making the cake.

But it still kind of blew as far as the first days of the New Year, yanno?

Also I didn't get laid and I bet I could have. Even with my inability to move my head to the left without horrible pain.

LJ going under? [Jan. 6th, 2009|09:57 pm]

The bubble in social networking has burst, decisively. LiveJournal, the San Francisco-based arm of Sup, a Russian Internet startup, has cut about 20 of 28 employees — and offered them no severance, we're told.

The company's product managers and engineers were laid off, leaving only a handful of finance and operations workers — which speaks to a website to be left on life support. Matt Berardo, a Yahoo executive hired on last summer, is also believed to be gone.

Note: This rant and the linked article refer to the upcoming Astro Boy CGI movie. If you are at all familiar with the source material, you will probably be offended by this article. Also, I hope none of you out there are big on Science Ninja Team Gatchaman, as Imagi promises that since "it is not as well known as Astro Boy, the project, about five super-powered teens fighting monsters, is open to interpretation. 'We’re kind of making up our own version based on the original 1970s cartoon.' "

http://www.star-ecentral.com/news/story.asp?file=/2009/1/4/movies/2871865&sec=movies

At the risk of pushing this into i_wank territory, WHAT THE FUCK. I mean, seriously. WHAT THE FUCK are you people thinking?

You did not just seriously say that you want to make Astro 'less feminine' because he has large eyes and, oh no, EYELASHES? He's a FREAKING 6-year-old-analogue ROBOT. What, are you worried about robo-pedophiles or something? It's not like he has tiny little robot-boy nipples to put pasties over, or a tiny little robot e-peen to cover up.

You did not just seriously argue with the goddamn Tezuka estate about the size of his ASS.

You did not just seriously say that you didn't MEAN to make a legendary Japanese iconic character look "American" but that it just kinda happened.

Just plain fucking NO. A huge bag of no.

This one is for my mom - she just finished reading Phantom of the Opera (book, obviously) and wants to know where the fandom is - or at least where the fanfiction is: if anyone could rec me some good bookverse fic* I would be very, very much obliged. Good mimickry of Gaston Leroux's style (in the puffin classics translation) is a gigantic bonus.

Also one from/for myself - now that I've exhausted Yuletide's offerings and am already in the middle of the Dragonchoice duology (it's good!) - is there any other good Dragonriders of Pern fic on the net? I'll read most anything, although I really like metay fic.

Bad placement of subtitles [Jan. 5th, 2009|01:57 am]

fandom_rant

[aeka]
Dear Fansubbers,

I appreciate all the hard work that you put into subbing anime and other international titles not available in the English language.

But for the love of god! Please use common sense when you decide to get creative and place text on random spots of the fucking screen. While I don't have a problem with a line of text appearing occasionally on top to translate signs or to briefly explain certain phrases unique to that language, I don't however want a whole freaken paragraph that covers up half of the characters' faces, while at the same time translating their dialogue at the bottom of the screen.

If you must write a full explanation for a particular idiom, or a particular event in the story, please DO so at the beginning of the episode before the actual opening credits start. Do you have ANY idea how it annoying it is to see a paragraph of text over a character's face JUST to be able explain a reference that you noticed early on? It's not only distracting, but if I'm reading a paragraph of text on the screen, I'm not seeing the action that's taking place, nor reading the dialogue that's being said. I can notice events for myself without you having to point them out to me, and if I missed a reference to something, it's very unlikely that I'll give a damn. I just want to watch the damned show.

Another thing bothers me: please, please, PLEASE! Keep the subtitles at the bottom of the screen? I don't think it's asking too much to not want my eyes to have to follow a trail of text appearing on different sides of the screen at random times. That's also really annoying and really distracting. I'd like to be able to focus as much on the action as possible rather than the actual text thank you.

Sincerely,

A Lover of Foreign Entertainment

So I finally went and installed Firefox 3, seeing as how they will no longer be doing anymore security updates. And I am pretty sure that pages are now loading much more slowly than my last Firefox 2 install. But I wasn't sure if it was Firefox 3 or my wireless connection (even though my computer says that my wireless signal is strong) so I thought "hey, why don't I download that new browser Google put out? I can see what that's like and then compare the two!" And I did, and used it for all of thirty seconds before it froze on me while I was changing tabs and I had to Ctrl Alt Delete it. And now I can't get rid of the little floaty blue "close" rectangle. NICE ONE GOOGLE Your Scott McCloud comic lied.

On the new Doctor guy-- seeing has how I have never seen in him in anything or heard his name before today I guess I really will have to wait and see, though I will be renting Ruby in the Smoke and DLing Party Animals (and judging by the rate the usual hosting sites are going for me right now I should be done just in time for Smith's time lord debut). I think my favorite reaction post so far has to be one that popped up in my RSS reader talking how they obviously were just looking for a Tennant wannabe and oh boy did they find him, etc. ...based solely on his Confidential interview. Which, unless Smith turns out to have all the range of a crumpled paper airplane, strikes me as more than slightly unfair. I am hoping that his take on the Doctor does turn out to be very different from David's, but we won't know until next year (or perhaps well into the new series, as it took a few episodes for Tennant to settle into his portrayal of the Doctor). Right now, however, my only complaint is that Matt Smith's lack of eyebrows means that Eleven will be impossible for me to draw. I had enough of a hard time when I tried to draw John Simm, for goodness sake

And speaking of drawing: this summer I bought a lead holder, for use in a drafting class. About a month after the class ended I figured out that the lead holder came with a built in sharpener. Today, about five months after I took the class, I figured out how to use that sharpener properly. I am not a competent person, in many matters.

fandom_lounge

[staroverthebay]
Okay, I think this is the place to post this, but if it's not, let me know and I'll delete it. It seems to pertain to "fandom" as a general rule.

Anyway, the news about Terry Pratchett being knighted has inspired me to pick up the books I've had sitting around waiting to read. I've finished "Mort" and I'm most of the way through "Wyrd Sisters" and while I can say that I love Granny Weatherwax and Nanny Ogg, the character I'm really in love with is Death himself. (God that sounds weird!)

Being that I'm pretty much broke right now (car payments, credit card payments, car repairs and now I'm going back to school... I has no money to spare on things like novels!) I have to reserve them at the library through their transfer system, and the transfer system is not very good at giving decent book descriptions beyond author, title, year published and format (hardcover vs softbound). So what I'd like to know is this: which books focus most on Death and his household? Because I seriously love his laid-back everything-in-due-time attitude, and I'd love to read more of his escapades. I'm sure I'll enjoy any Pratchett book I pick up, but I'm really eager to read the books about Death. (Why do I get this weird feeling that I sound like an emo-gothic-wannabe when I say that?)

Got an account on JournalSpace? [Jan. 3rd, 2009|07:22 pm]

fandom_lounge

[freezer]
Not anymore, you don't.

Journalspace is no more.

DriveSavers called today to inform me that the data was unrecoverable.

Here is what happened: the server which held the journalspace data had two large drives in a RAID configuration. As data is written (such as saving an item to the database), it's automatically copied to both drives, as a backup mechanism.

The value of such a setup is that if one drive fails, the server keeps running, using the remaining drive. Since the remaining drive has a copy of the data on the other drive, the data is intact. The administrator simply replaces the drive that's gone bad, and the server is back to operating with two redundant drives.

But that's not what happened here. There was no hardware failure. Both drives are operating fine; DriveSavers had no problem in making images of the drives. The data was simply gone. Overwritten.

For all the bitching we do about LJ and (occasionally) JF, at least their backups actually back things up.

I'm just C&P'ing a mousie's post from wank_report. I can't pass up entitlement wank.

Crunchyroll is going legit. The site owner, Shinji, has been wheeling and dealing to have anime air subbed only days after it airs in Japan.

OK, users are pleased, the Naruto fans look on in anticipation, everything seems hunky-dory.

Then, Shinji introduces Anime memberships for the site. Did not read all of the benefits but the gist seems to be higher quality videos and quicker access to the anime from Japan.

That happened in the past few weeks. Now queue the new year!

Oops, did he just say that he was removing all fan uploaded content and getting permission from the publishers?

Queue the butthurt, angst, and I will kill for my anime!!!!Z!!!!!!ZOMG~!!!! Along with people eagerly trading links for other sites to feed their addiction.

The dramas, anime, and music sections now look like ghost towns, with the exception of stuff Shinji has wheeled and dealed for.

People are predicting the death of the site, but for now, it's fun seeing the entitlement angst going on over there.

Hey, sports fans!

Sometimes [info]sepiamagpie and I host an online game of the board game Balderdash, which is a game of filthy lies.

The way the game plays: A question is picked from five categories (acronyms, names, words, laws, and movies) and you make up an answer to try and fool the other players into picking yours when they're all read outloud. The real answer is always slipped in during the final reading and points are determined by whether you voted for the right one and who voted for your answer.

Example:

WACKY WORDS: Bobbyalla

And then the answers are read out of order, without the real writers revealed:

player 2: An african animal
player 1: The real term for the laughtrack you hear on sitcoms
real answer: A stubby Tasmanian tree
player 3: An ancient Wicca incantation.

And then the voting and so on.

If you're interested in playing, please leave a message here or drop by on aim. Talk to me: Snacky8 or [info]sepiamagpie voodoohamster.

[info]wrything_worms then flounces and passive-agressively recants keeping the guitar in a second post to prove to all those nasty people calling [info]wrything_worms an asshole just how much of a non-asshole [info]wrything_worms is.

how to be legendary )

Naturally, more drama unfolds, but a lot of people agree that the cunt comment was uncalled for.

Someone asks an important question: Wait, how did he get the guitar there if he was riding a bike?
my reference to british people was merely referring to the fact that a great many of them use the word 'cunt' like any other word, therefore taking away from it's power Or how personal journal trolling is the classy thing to do.
When he comes to get it, fuck with his head!

Edit: What exactly can you get from starbucks that's $1.55 anyways?

Wherein I Get Tipsy, Reminisce, Look Forward to 2009 and [Dec. 31st, 2008|07:07 pm]

Wish You All a Happy New Years on Behalf of Myself and D Kitty

I'm not tipsy yet. D Kitty is attempting to cough up a hairball on my office carpet. Whee!

So, here's a sort of year end "best and worst" wrap up type thing:

Best New Word:: Fabugross. Coined by a poster on TWOP in connection with the "ladies" of The Real Housewives of Orange County.

Best Things about 2008, Generally:

1. Election Night

2. Tina Fey.

3. David Cook winning American Idol.

4. The Olympics.

Best Things about 2008, Personally:

1. Losing over 30 pounds and dropping 4 sizes.

2. My Seacloud voyage.

3. My sister's New York Times bestseller book, The Snowball.

4. Yesterday my trainer had me do lunges and hold balances for 3 seconds on one foot in between each lunge. Six months ago I could not have done that. Six months ago I couldn't even do a lunge or hold a balance, much less do them in combination. For goodness sake, one year ago I couldn't even really walk! But yesterday I did those lunge/balance combos, easily. In fact, I kind of enjoyed them! I can not only walk, I can skip and twirl and even run on the elliptical. And I no longer wake up in the middle of the night, crying in pain.

Best Wank:

This is tough, because there was rare wank (A Song of Ice and Fire wank, of all things! ) and large quantities of Twilight wank and Avatar shipping wank and the whole FanHistory mess and the LJ Advisory Board election mess and hilarious Moonlight wank (a personal fav because I loved that cheesey vampire show) and Clay Aiken outing himself and so, so many more but the winner, hands down, was the epic saga:

RDR v. Rowling and WB

I'm not going to link it. There are too many posts and I know people on both sides of the issue and don't want to upset anyone. IMO no matter which side you were on, it was the most noteworthy wank of the year. I used to know SVA (and I will state upfront I think he was very wrong but also very mislead by RDR and I hope that he manages to work through some things and move on to more productive pursuits).

Worst Things about 2008, Generally:

Where do I begin? I'm not going to try to make a numbered list. It's too depressing. Every year end round up in print and on TV reminds us: Spitzer; Blagojevich; The acrimony in the Democratic primaries; "Terrorist!" "Kill him!"; The economy's collapse; the completely boring, unfabugross return of 90210;The Bachelorette; Lame Duck Bush trying to wreck the planet as fast as he can before he's shipped back here (yes, here! Barf!); Rachel Zoe (Okay, she's pretty fabugross, but she's also extremely annoying and glorifies eating disorders, so she's a fabugross loser). I'm leaving a lot out because there was just so much that I can't even really get my mind wrapped around them all. Now we are ending the year with a full out Israeli-Palestinian war and a full out Time Warner - Viacom war. How fitting.

Personal worst for 2008: I can't think of one.

I've had a much better year than the world in general did. I've been insanely blessed, and you all are a big part of that blessing. You've given me great, heaping mounds of encouragement and support and been there for me when I was down (which wasn't often, but did happen a few times).

Personal Goals for 2009:

I don't believe in resolutions. I think they are a way of setting one's self up for failure. However, I do like to make some general goals to work towards, so in 2009 I'd like to:

1. Continue exercising and eating healthy food;

2. Read more;

3. Be more active in general;

4. Start doing some volunteer work.

What I'm most looking forward to in 2009:

The Inauguration;

Sims 3

My Hopes for 2009:

Good health, happiness, and prosperity for all of us!

Happy New Year's Everyone!

Twitter is fucking surreal. Like, tonight I watched Greg Grunberg declare his love for Wil Wheaton in realtime and then invite him to a joint ranch dressing bubble bath.

Of course, I'm strung out and sleepy so I COULD HAVE HALLUCINATED THE WHOLE THING.

Hey, sports fans!

Sometimes me and [info]snacky host an online game of the board game Balderdash, which is a game of filthy lies.

Example:

WACKYY WORDS: Bobbyalla

And then the answers are read out of order, without the real writers revealed:

player 2: An african animal
player 1: The real term for the laughtrack you hear on sitcoms
real answer: A stubby Tasmanian tree
player 3: An ancient Wicca incantation.

And then the voting and so on.

If you're interested in playing, please leave a message here or drop by on aim. Talk to me: VoodooHamster or Snacky: Snacky8

The game will take place on: FRIDAY AT 7 PM CENTRAL

fandom surveys [Dec. 30th, 2008|09:45 pm]

[gelasius]
Grad Student Studies Fandom with FAN MEDIA AND CREATIVITY survey. Yeehaw!

The grad student in question is more gamer than fen, but I think the survey is pretty aware of the fandom experience anyway. The questions towards the end are thought-provoking in... unusual (okay, kinda weird) ways, but there's a nice little space to ramble on about them. The fact that the survey-creator is a friend of mine should in no way detract from my totally rational opinion that contributing lots of (anonymousey) data to a research study that's actually trying to understand fandom culture can only be a Good Thing. Right? Right. So, you know, spread the link far and wide for the next few weeks while she collects the responses. :)

I'm posting this here instead of fandom-lounge in part because I'm curious: what are YOUR thoughts on academic-type surveys of fandom behavior?

a) Hell yeah! I fight crime with data!
b) BORING and/or elitist. I'd rather read fic.
c) Usually they suck
c1) This one sucks
c2) This one actually doesn't suck
d) I'm skeptical of fandom surveys for reasons I may or may not explain in the comments.
e) I want a "I fight crime with data" t-shirt.*
f) I have an actual answer to this question that cannot be contained by multiple choice.

*Me too. Someone get on this.

***ahem***.

At the intersection of FFVII and FFR... [Dec. 30th, 2008|04:02 pm]

When [info]shezoo reposts hir Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children fanfic, "Flower Face", to [info]ffvii_yaoi (locked, comm is open membership), the response is seemingly underwhelming - that is until [info]eternalwings posts to [info]fanficrants about the story.

The first few comments are pretty tame and agreeable, until some of the author's friends and the author hirself show up.

It's called AU, twit.

Apparently, the story title comes from Welsh mythology, something [info]renos_rude AND [info]screamersgirl
