Ganked from raisedbymoogles.

Comment with a sentence from one of my fics (original or fan). Without looking, I have to try and guess which fic of mine the sentence is from. If I fail, the challenger wins a drabble request. Post this in your own journal and let me challenge you!

I woke up with an odd urge this morning to set up an install of the LiveJournal Server somewhere. I couldn't tell you why or where this comes from, and it's not like that between InsaneJournal, DeadJournal, JournalFen and Inksome the world needs another LJServer.

Still, there's always that burning urge to prove I can. It probably comes from the same place I keep my annoyance at InsaneJournal, with its stupid ugly mascot and ads and totally-witty-when-you-were-13-honest site theme. Plus my journal themes would be way cooler. And actually contain standards-compliant, semantic XHTML.

I wonder what I'd call it?

Oh yeah; sorry to those of you who use Yummy del.icio.us. The interface was broken for a bit with the PHP version upgrade, but should now be fixed. You may have to recreate your thingies at del.icio.us before it will start posting again.

So I went and signed up for InsaneJournal and JournalFen the other day, mostly just to test the Glue and see how sk.log handles multiple journal crossposting.

Really well, as it turns out, so now those journals are mirrors of this one.

Also, there's a new home for Yummy Delicious – the Delicious Glue interface – which now supports those two sites as well as LJ. Hooray.

24th January, 2008 @ 9:22 am del.icio.us Glue for Me and You

Oh yeah. Remember how I was talking yesterday about having set up Delicious Glue? Well, you guys can use it too, if you want. Because I like looking though other people's links.

  1. First you will need an account at LiveJournal, InsaneJournal or JournalFen.
  2. Second, a del.icio.us account. del.icio.us is a social bookmarking tool; grab it, grab the Firefox plugin and start bookmarking links.
  3. Log into del.icio.us and visit the daily blog posting page in the settings.
  4. Click add new thingy.
  5. Set out_name and out_pass to your LiveJournal username and password (del.icio.us doesn't steal your login info and neither do I, just in case you were wondering).
  6. Set out_url to http://glue.void-star.net/livejournal (http://glue.void-star.net/insanejournal and http://glue.void-star.net/journalfen work too).
  7. out_time is a bit more tricky because the LJ client is a bit stupid and doesn't understand time zones. It also won't accept a new post made 'before' a post you've already made. To make it more complicated, del.icio.us uses GMT while the Glue script uses AEST. So I set out_time to 13 because 1pm GMT is midnight for me, and by making a post at midnight I'm not likely to get time clashes. So out_time controls when a post is made, but the timestamp on the post will be in AEST. Your best bet it probably just to set it to whatever and if you get issues to keep moving the time around until you find something that doesn't give you problems. I should probably work on making the time thing a bit more configurable… Oh, and if you want to know what the current time in GMT is, just ask Google (and for AEST).
  8. Press Submit Query (you can leave the other two options blank; they don't do anything).
  9. Now wait until your post is scheduled. The actual script usually runs about 20 minutes after whatever hour (in GMT) you've specified in out_time

And there you have it. Wait until your time rolls around and hopefully you should get something that looks like this. Too easy!

23rd January, 2008 @ 1:36 pm Adventures With Spiders

So one of the ladies at work just came up to me, obviously freaked out, and asked if I was any good with spiders. I was like, "Not really," but when she told me there was a great big one in the stairwell, I got a stack of paper towels and valiantly descended to the exit in order to brush the thing out. It sure was big; not a Hunstman but something of similar size, maybe a Wolf spider, neither of which are particularly dangerous (just huge and hairy).

Bolstered in confidence by the arrival of some other guys, we tried to harry the spider outside. It was somewhat reluctant to go but in the end, with me holding open the door, we flicked it outside…

… where it promptly vanished.

Up the leg of my pants.

No I am not kidding. I have wide-legged pants so I couldn't feel it, and thus had no idea where it was other than 'vanished'. I think I was pretty brave, considering; rolling up the leg until I saw, well, legs, and standing still while it got brushed off for me.

So that was my excitement for the day. I think after that ordeal I deserve a Cornetto from the drinks fridge…

In less arachnocentric news, those of you who read this via LJ will notice that the links from my del.icio.us account are now getting pumped out once a day thanks to the wonder of Delicious Glue. Rejoyce!

Also: Pownce. You know you want to.
