Lupin_Snape Fantasy Fest: Prompts needed...TV musings.... [Jul. 8th, 2010|11:13 am]
[Current Location |around]
[mood |blah]
[music |Crowded House: Saturday Sun]

So, the [community profile] lupin_snape members wanted the Fantasy Fest brought back this year. We're coming to the end of the prompting period, but it's not too late to get your own wish into the prompts. The prompt period ends tomorrow (Friday, July 9).

I had said prompting would end at Noon, but we all know I don't close things out on the button. You should go straight to the post and put some prompts in now, but if you forget and slap your head tomorrow night, I'll still put them in.

You can prompt up to 6 times, 2 in each category of Story, Art, and Drabble/Drawable. You do not have to be writing for the fest to prompt.

In other news...still full of Meh. We went from early spring (very cool) straight into wet and sticky hot here. It was a struggle to shift gears like that, but I think I'm finally over it. There's been a lot of health issues in the family this year, which brings its own kind of stress and inattention to my own health. I'm still trying to find my way up and out of that pit.

I've been trying to clear out the TiVO to little avail, as I'm also taking full advantage of the free HBO we have until August. It is so strange to watch movies and shows on the TV without commercials. Oh, sure, we do that with DVDs, but it's different, I tell you!

It's also different watching huge chunks of shows in one go. I've decided that Shonda Rhimes is a terrible writer and I need to seriously consider not watching her shows in the fall ("Private Practice" & "Grey's Anatomy"). Characters are never allowed to just move on in her shows. They must all be killed in the most crass, manipulative ways possible in her season finales. Plus, every character on "Private Practice" has now slept with at least two other characters, which means I could care less who ends up with whom. The relationships there are so messy and convoluted, there's no one to root for anymore.

I'm a little pissed that the networks can't figure out a way to keep a female ensemble drama on the air past "Desperate Housewives". I've enjoyed the "Sex & the City" knock-offs, but they never make it past a season. Someone should serialize Bridget Jones.

I guess I save my most random thoughts for Twitter. Watch this space, yeah?

BL publishers, year 3.... [Apr. 25th, 2010|06:27 am]
[Tags|]
[mood |discontent]
[music |Xanadu, Xanadu-ooo-oo!]

It seems like once a year or so, I write a round-up of the health of the BL publishers. Someone made a remark on the June forums about the Manga market being so niche that it didn't lose much revenue when the recession started. Oh, how I wish. Read on for the current picture.

BL publishers and their current health )

I told the Forumites to draw their own conclusions, but the picture looks pretty damn bleak to me. It also seems like the harder some companies fight to stay alive, the more spoiled and self-entitled their fans become, griping and complaining all over the place without a word of thanks when they do get something they want.

Support BL manga by buying whenever you can. For some of these companies, the difference between healthy and bust can easily come down to just a few sales. If you don't know what the heck I'm talking about, click the tag on this post for more information and start with the oldest post.

Lupin_Snape Remix Exchange - Short, easy, creative, fun! [Apr. 23rd, 2010|04:31 pm]
[Current Location |neverwhere]
[mood |enthusiastic]
[music |Neil Gaiman's National Library interview]

Been away from Lupin/Snape for a while? We miss you! Consider coming back around for this low-requirement, quick-turnaround exchange!

Lupin/Snape Remix Exchange - Sign-ups end at 7 p.m. on Monday, April 26

This exchange is for artists and authors interested in the idea of getting to "re-mix" someone else's piece, as well as having one of their own pieces re-imagined.

Signing-up is easy! Besides the usual name and e-mail info, we just need a short list of major squicks, and a link of some sort to your Snape/Lupin pieces you're offering to re-mix. If you have an archive and anything goes, you can link to your archive. If you'd like to pick and choose your works, make a link list between 5 and 10 pieces. That's it!

If you are a newer creator to the pairing, I will accept drabbles/drawables and less than 5 pieces (3, please!), but you need to note that in your sign-up.

For authors, the minimum word count is only 500 words. Stories do not need to match the length of the original. Artists, I'm going to trust you to put in the level of effort you feel is reasonable and equal to 500 words.

Assignments will go out the last week of April (yes, I'm hoping matching will be easy and it will be Monday night) and your Remix is due back on May 30.

Sound like fun? Not sure what a Remix is? Visit the sign-up post on LJ or IJ for more information.

IJ: http://asylums.insanejournal.com/lupin_snape/531885.html

I hope we'll see some familiar faces signing up this weekend!

Snupin Showers...random gnar.... [Mar. 30th, 2010|12:13 am]
[mood |restless]
[music |Castle!]

So, remember waaay back in the day when [community profile] lupin_snape was ripe for growth, and the community held the April Showers challenge? Those were good times, weren't they? Well, now, as a way to reach back to those heady times, we're holding a Snupin Showers on the [community profile] lupin_snape communities this April.

Snupin Showers, though, is simply the idea of one person posting on a claimed day, for each day of the month. You can post anything as long as it has some Lupin/Snape content. We need 30 people.

If you've been away from the community for a while, April would be a good month to peek back in. It would be a great month to get involved again, if only for your one day. There are posting details and a sign-up list on both LiveJournal and InsaneJournal, and it would be wonderful to see some of you over there again! ♥

*****
I should post something personal in March, huh? It's been a bad winter. Not horrible, but bad enough, and I'm hoping to put its trials behind us. April is getting really full for me personally, as we have something social in the works on every weekend. We just had a half-vacation, but I think I'll be taking even more days off to pad the weekends.

I saw wild turkeys and a camel last week, and if you knew where I lived, the camel outside of a zoo was most odd, indeed.

The SO still hasn't given me a bouquet of daffodils. What is this, year two or three of blatantly stating this want? Hummm.

We've been missing a lot of the "big" movies and hitting some smaller ones by chance and happenstance. Kevin Smith's Cop Out was actually pretty funny. We had very low expectations and were pleasantly surprised. It had a Beverly Hills Cop feel, only not in the sad, nostalgic way, but in the updated, modern way. She's Out Of Your League was sweet and gross in an Apatowesque way. And then there was:

Hot Tub Time Machine!!

John Cusak sent back to the 80s in a hot tub? Dude, *I* can't write that crack in my wildest dreams! And it rocked the crack hard, let me tell you! Soooooooooooooo much fun! Hot Tub Time Machine! Mix Tape! WHOO!!!

I liked my sushi at the place we tried Saturday but BIL didn't. WOE! Because now all I want is raw calamari wrapped around some cheap crab stick and masago. Yummmm. Still, I'll trade it for a hot pot attempt, which is in our near future.

I've been reading a ton of manga. Mostly BL, but I have tried a couple-few non-BL titles. If anyone wants recs, let me know. The SO is sending off my e-reader for updating, so I guess I better pick up a real book soon. I wonder what the Sony guys will think of all that Snupin fan fic on there? *evils*

Anyway, I should go and try to sleep. You'd think I'd write here more, as much as I'm awake, but the hours are no productive when you're pooped. ~_^

A whole lot of random thoughts, mainly on music.... [Feb. 7th, 2010|05:52 am]
[mood |weird]
[music |Palladia, of course!]

Music has returned to me. In a way. I know it has because I've been thinking about Crowded House. And whenever I think about Crowded House, I'm thinking about music. Don't worry, that's only supposed to make sense to me, but I thought I'd share it anyway.

First, the cable company recently added Palladia to our HD channels. Remember MTV? This channel is what it (and/or VH1) should have morphed into, not the reality teen crap it's become. There's...music on 24-7. All sorts of music shows and concerts and...and...videos. All in HD, which is just fucking bonus, man. Watching the channel makes me feel like a dried-up plant that's being watered just before it's too late. Good gawd, music.

That said, I love Daughtry's music, but some acts aren't meant to be seen up-close and personal in HD. Chris Daughtry is a giant...head. With too lovely eyes and an oddly trimmed beard that looks like a vaguely phallic canvas on his big, big head.

Taylor Swift almost had me. Her simple pop songs are infectious and they're played relentlessly and she allllllmost had me. Until the Grammys, that is. It really wasn't how poorly she sang as much as the fact that her executive producer on Fearless had to go and piss off Kelly Clarkson. Because when Kelly speaks, I listen, people. Well, Kelly and Pink. Because girls half my age have it way more together than me. Plus, I can't help but think that they helped me dodge a Swift bullet.

Ok, I know Disney teen queens Demi Lovato and Selena Gomez are best friends in Real Life, but look at their album covers from last year: Demi, Selena. What's with the odd lips, ladies? Did you guys make a pact or lose bets to each other? YUG. That said, Selena's "Naturally" is a better song than a lot of what Lovato's put out. I want to like Lovato's music, I really, do, but...she's trying too hard. And it comes out in the sound to me.

I spent the day with my stomach hurting, watching ABCFamily and getting weepy. I think I've finally figured out the Disney obsession - yeah, the stories are simple and feel-good, but, more than that, it's the fact that parents openly love their children. It's utterly fascinating to me, especially the adoring fathers. My father was an idiot, letting us get away from him with his living zombie routine, but nothing I could have ever done would have woken him up. It was on him, and he missed out. I did, too, but you can't get blood from a stone. Plus, you know, I didn't get to watch a lot of feel-good TV growing up. Maybe I would have gotten the Disney thing out of me earlier, otherwise.

(Tip for Valentine's day: Don't send ProFlowers if you can afford to send something nicer or pick something up. Those things come completely wild. You have to free them from the packaging - of which there is a ton - pull off petals, cut them, trim leaves left on too low - they're work. And if you receive them at your office, it will take you serious time and mess to prep them for display, especially if you only have a bathroom in which to work. Remember, most people are not natural florists or flower-arrangers, which is what ProFlowers expects you to be to make a bouquet look like it does in their ads. Also, the flowers die more quickly than prepared flowers, I speak from multiple experiences. You'd be better off hitting the grocery store for a simple mix than sending ProFlowers.)

I haven't been watching professional figure skating for a long while now, but the TiVO did catch one for me and I sat through it. I'd forgotten how good those shows were for finding new and unique music. Rarely does the TiVO "figure skating" filter pick up stuff for me, but maybe I'll have to troll around the guide for a few more, if only to fast-forward for the music.

I've read a bunch of my BL mangas while being sick. I kind of want to leave some Amazon reviews, but there's a BL Nazi (can I say that anymore? Nazi? Or has it become un-PC? It's so descriptive of how this person acts) that hangs around Amazon and jumps all over any reviews she doesn't agree with, especially ones that are critical of anything she sees as BDSM. Of course, she has no real understanding of BDSM, categorizing anything vaguely hardcore, violent and/or with bondage as BDSM, but she writes and writes and writes until you just don't want to deal with her anymore. A bully through word count, if you will. Honestly, there are a lot of people who are word-count bullies on the Internet, but this is my first experience with one bullying me. She writes in circles. I could give her an education on BDSM, but something tells me she would just tell me I'm wrong in no less than the maximum character limit on Amazon. I suppose not reviewing is letting her win, but I'll have to choose my timing, then. Need to gather my energy and focus to face the word pummeling.

Superbowl tomorrow. Go Colts! I might open this window and share some random thoughts. I wish we could be with live friends, but I can't share these germs just yet. We have plans to see everyone next weekend for brunch, which will just have to do.

Recs: Snupin Santa part 3.... [Jan. 7th, 2010|02:03 am]
[Tags|]
[mood |sleepy]
[music |whirrrrr - still need to install that new HD]

A Dream Within a Dream
Rated: Gingersnaps (PG13), Genre: Romance, Dreamfic, Word count: 7214
Summary: Severus goes on a journey through a strange land.

Fics that use dreams as a plot device rarely read like real "dreams", but this one does. I wouldn't call the fic cracked, but the dreamscape Severus finds himself in is unfamiliar, yet vividly described. I enjoyed this fic very much. It is warm and well crafted.

*****
Interludes and Peppermint
Rated: Gingerbread & Cocoa (PG), Era: 1960-1981: Marauders Era, Word count: 1935
Summary: In their fifth year, Remus and Severus are both left at Hogwarts over the holidays. They discover that they have a few things in common.

Oh, boys! This short story packs a punch, depicting Snape and Lupin on the cusp of manhood. We're given a sweet, fraught moment from their lives, a held breath set just before pain that is to come. The writer captures boys at 15 perfectly.

*****
Rolling With Punches
Rated: Gingersnaps (PG13), Era: Post-wars, Word count: 7801
Summary: It took Snape three days to track Lupin to New York City. It took nearly three weeks to find him.

This story reads like a slice out of a grand novel. Severus explores the werewolf underworld of New York and at times, the misery in this story seems tangible. But there is a kind of bittersweetness to the end that leaves us with hope. Severus is well drawn here, retaining all of his snark and intelligence even as we discover that he is capable of deeper feelings. There's enough of the story here to satisfy while still making you wish there was just a little bit more...and then a little bit more after that. ~_^

Annnd, that's probably all I'll have time for before the reveal! Obviously, I was looking at stories that hadn't already been lauded high and low. I hope you've discovered something new here over the past three days!

Recs: Snupin Santa part 2.... [Jan. 6th, 2010|02:48 am]
[Tags|]
[mood |restless]
[music |whirrrrrr]

The Investigation
Rated: Gingersnaps (PG13), Era: Post-wars, Word count: 9730
Summary: Remus lies in a mysterious coma at St. Mungo's. After all the usual remedies fail, Severus is brought in to investigate. Bitter from many disappointments, Severus is surprised when what he learns about Remus challenges his preconceived notions.

I liked that the story didn't depict a perfect post-war world for either Severus or Remus, but also not a bleak one as well. They each had their fair share of challenges, but both men botched good situations for themselves, which I thought was an interesting parallel to draw. Severus' regard for Remus comes about slowly, and the investigation itself has depth and intelligence; it's not glossed over in the least. There's even my favourite new kink I keep asking for in exchanges - a mind link! It's not my gift, but I was thrilled to see it written, just the same. A solid, good read!

*****
Art: 1979
Rated: Gingersnaps (PG13) - not quite work safe, Era: 1981-1991: The Missing Years
Summary: London, 1979

I'll just use part of my comments to Santa to tempt you to look at this art: Remus' big hands and Severus' crooked leg and his perfect bum and the shirts and the chest hair and that little pink nipple and the dusting of freckles across Remus' nose and his hooded eyes and they aren't about to kiss, they are about to devour....Yeah, now go look at the actual image and prepare to swoon!

*****
Art: Sir Guy goes to battle
Rated: On the Nice List (G), Era: 1998-onward: After the Second War
Summary: From skee_ratling's fic, "Once Upon a War", Severus heads off to battle accompanied by Lupin and Eloise.

I don't think you have to have read the fic the art is based on to appreciate the image. Merlin fans, especially, could see this as a crossover image. ~_^

Sometimes, you just know when a piece of art is special. There's a fabulous amount of detail in both the depiction of the characters' dress to the depth of the colours used. The characters' faces are especially well done, with a wealth of atmosphere being communicated through them. The best part, of course, is the look Remus and Severus are sharing - yum! It's the kind of art that you can appreciate all on its own, but I have to admit, it also makes me want to read the story - what writer could ask for anything more?!

*****
Art: Party Spirit
Rated: Gingerbread & Cocoa (PG), Era: 1991-1998: Hogwarts Era, Word count: 17
Summary: What did Severus Snape really think of Slughorn's Christmas party?

Wow, this is a tough one to explain - tough, but delightful. Santa has created a series of images to accompany a hilarious poetic reciting of Severus' opinions and observations of Slughorn's Christmas party in HBP. Remus is his willing listener. As you can see from the word count, the poetic reciting is not very long, but the images that punctuate it are rich in both drama and crack. Almost all the main characters from the HBP scene are shown in amusing light. But really, the only carrots I should need to give to get you to go look for yourself are these: Severus' facepalm and Remus' pert bum.

*****
For One More Chance
Rated: Holiday Spice (R), Era: Post-wars, Word count: 9842
Summary: He didn't tell anyone where he was going that day, nor did he tell them what he was planning to summon. At best, they'd have called him mad; at worse they'd have locked him up for dabbling in such ancient, restricted arts. Not that he really cared. Remus was on a mission, and he'd do anything to get to Severus. Even risk his soul in a seemingly impossible wager with Death.

This story impressed me so much because it felt unique even while using familiar literary and fanon tropes. The scenes are well described and the plot carefully planned, building toward a satisfying ending that left me cheering. There's nothing I like better than a determined Remus Lupin. There's also a lovely bit of smex. Yum!

As always, if you click on over, be sure to let the creators know you were there by leaving a comment. How'm I doin' so far? Such a late start for me! ♥

Recs: Snupin Santa part 1.... [Jan. 5th, 2010|07:35 pm]
[Tags|]
[mood |impressed]
[music |Bones reruns!]

The Cat's Paw
Rated: Coal and Switches (NC17), Era: Post-wars, Genre: Romance, Word Count: 12,489
Summary: Remus learns his pet is even more special than he imagined.

This is a charming, thoughtful tale of Severus, both the cat and man, and how he comes to see Remus and Teddy as his family.

I liked the details on how the situation in the story came to be, as well as Teddy's enthusiasm. There's also a particularly wicked, delicious section with Kingsley Shacklebolt that shouldn't be missed. Remus is full of warmth and good cheer, but we see that he's grown a bit of backbone since the final battle, which makes for interesting reading. And Severus' journey is thorough and satisfying to read.

*****
Bungle In the Jungle
Rated: Holiday Spice (R), Genre: Alternate Universe, Romance, Word count: 36,810
Summary: After being stranded in the middle of nowhere, temperamental chef turned TV host Severus Snape develops a new-found appreciation for his capable right-hand man, Remus Lupin.

Long, juicy, smexy, plotty - Yes, this is my gift from [profile] snupin_santa this year. And boy, howdy, did Santa know how to push all my buttons!

This is a non-magical AU with Severus as an Anthony Bourdain-type food/travel show host and Remus as his devoted assistant. Severus makes the mistake of unleashing his anger on a particularly bad driver in the middle of a jungle, and it's up to Remus to lead them both to safety. Along the way are moments of classic adventure and romance in the same style as Romancing the Stone and Indiana Jones.

After I was done reading, I kept daydreaming about this story, its world and what might come next, which is a sure sign that my imagination had been captured by it. Don't miss out on this grand, romantic adventure!

*****
The Christmas Wish
Rated: Coal and Switches (NC17), Era: Post-wars, Word count: 6125
Summary: Severus and Remus try to explain their relationship to Teddy.

The summary on this story is a bit misleading. Teddy does question their status as a family, but the story is more about the relationship between Severus, Remus, Teddy and Andromeda. This is the first story I can remember reading that actually moves from Andromeda's disapproval to her eventual acceptance of Remus and Severus. Along the way are some scenes of their lives together along the way, including a very smexy bit of bondage play.

There are some moments in the story where the transitions are a bit awkward, but overall, the unique take on the character relationships make it a story well worth reading.

*****
Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me
Rated: Holiday Spice (R), Genre: Non-Magical AU, Word count: 22,668
Summary: Life begins to unravel for Severus Snape when a figure from his past shows up to wreck havoc. Can Remus Lupin be just the salvation he needs?

This is some solid writing. Reading it is like biting into a thick piece of dense, warm bread with a dollop of melty butter on top. This story is YUMMY for anyone who likes plot, details and a Severus and Remus that are complicated and heart-breaking, but ultimately find salvation in each other.

A non-magical AU, the story features strictly Marauders-era characters cast in interesting alternate roles. The author doesn't waste time trying to re-tell tropes from the series, instead using the characters to instantly create mystery and sympathy as the plot unravels. The story isn't quite a mystery, but the full details of past events are revealed slowly; curiosity made me read frantically until the end, when all was revealed and then put to good use.

Seriously good stuff here, gang! If you read, be sure to comment, ok? It's never too late to give the gift of letting people know you looked at their stuff. ~_^

Sleep...resolves...superstition...an offer...ssrl lyrics stash.... [Dec. 31st, 2009|10:21 am]
[mood |recumbent]
[music |Batman!]

So, it is morning. You'd think I would just be waking up, but nooo. I am contemplating sleep after this. Because I have BORKED my sleep schedule that badly over the holidays. I don't dare make a resolution to sleep more properly, but I don't dare NOT make that resolution either. ~_^ The bed lives in fear!

I resolve to have much less to do with emotional vampires. I resolve to keep howling at the moon (it's full tonight, only happens on NYEve once every 19 years, howl with me!). I resolve to sing more.

And that's it. I rarely make "real" resolutions because I don't like to make promises I can't keep, which is really what a resolution is - a promise to yourself. Whatever you resolve this year, be kind to yourself. You deserve it.

As you may remember, our NYEve tradition is to write the things we wish to leave behind in the old year on a calendar from that year. Then just after Midnight, we burn the calendars. I've also had people tell me some of their prosperity traditions that I'd never heard of, and I think I'm going to one this year (a coin over the threshold into the house - or silver coins on all the window sills, but I don't have that many actual silver coins! One over the door will have to do).

Perhaps I should resolve to use less parenthesis in my journal entries? Hum. My other superstition involves the idea that what you do on the first day of the year is what you do all year. So, instead of spending it at the movies (that's what Saturday is for, right?), I plan on doing some reading and writing, calling the fam, eating right, and sleeping. I'll let the rest take care of itself. Well, ok, maybe one movie won't hurt either. *snerk*

Oh! And I should make a journal entry, right? If you don't see one by mid-evening on NYDay, poke me!

If you want me to write in our calendars for you, leave a comment before 7 pm and screen it if you want. We'll burn it out, baby!

Finally, stashing some lyrics here to contemplate for SS/RL. How I wish I could eradicate the "babes"!

Snupin Rec: Open Hand [Dec. 8th, 2009|04:40 am]
[Tags|]
[mood |good]
[music |whirrrrrr, man I need to upgrade this HD]

Open Hand by Anonymous in [profile] hp_yule_balls, NC17, ~6000 words.
Summary: After the war, Severus must decide whether or not he wants to pick up where he left off with Remus, and Remus helps him make up his mind.
Warnings: not canon compliant in that Snape and Lupin survive the war and Teddy isn't Remus' biological child, mutual masturbation, use of Legilimency during sex, desperation, established relationship

I will get to my darling [profile] snupin_santa soon, but I didn't feel it was right to make my Yule Balls writer wait for me. I don't often talk about gifts I've received in my journal, mainly because of my own hang-ups. It feels like I'm bragging even when I'm perfectly fine and think nothing of people talking about their own gifts. And this post doesn't mean I didn't appreciate or feel motivated to post about gifts I've received in the past or will receive in the future. I'm just wide awake and the moment has struck me when usually, it doesn't. Anyway, I'm a twisted little monkey sometimes.

Open Hand is a great "just after the war ends" story with Severus convalescing and Remus at his side. They'd had a relationship in the past, but Remus insisted on marrying Tonks for his own reasons, and they'd been not seeing each other for most of the last year of the war. Now what?

I'll tell you -- some h/c that's light on the hurt and heavy on the comfort, just the way I like it, and some great character moments and some emotionally satisfying Legilimency intimacy. The relationship between the men registers as particularly masculine to me (most stories don't ping me either way, so it's something I will notice if it swings one way or the other), with Remus' characterization adding to that sense quite a bit.

It's only 6000 words, it's well written, it's hot. But don't you dare read it unless you plan to leave Santa a comment when you're done. ^_^

BloMo30: Being a good reader & commenter in fandom gift exchanges.... [Nov. 30th, 2009|11:59 pm]
[mood |creative]
[music |Star Trek DVD]

OK, I said I would write on the good kind of commenting/feedback in fandom exchanges (and in general) for my final NaBloPoMo because tomorrow starts all the holiday gift exchanges. But, I have a tendency to babble about these things, which can be too much information in a messy pile of paragraphs. I should try to keep it simple, right?, so that those considering delurking to comment won't be overwhelmed by the very idea of it. To that end, here is one of my famous lists, the kind where my comments get longer as I go along. ^_^

1. No heavy criticism - Most exchanges are anonymous; the creators can't defend themselves until the end of the month, so your comments sit out there making you look meeeen and the creator's friends froth at the mouth.

2. You just have to give one critical comment? - Say what you liked about the gift and that you have some critiques you'd like to pass on through the mods or that you will leave when the gifter is revealed. Something like, "I have some concrit for you, but I'll come back to leave it when you're able to address my comments as yourself," would be nice.

2.5. No flames! - Think you have the right to criticize anyway? Ok, I won't argue with you on that, fandom has been debating it for years. But be sure to address your issues with the gift without getting personal about it. The story sucks, not the author.

2.75. Don't impose your ideas on "how things should be" on creators during exchanges - Remember, they are creating a gift based on someone's specific wants and desires. If you think Remus would never wear a ponytail, don't complain about or disagree with Remus having a pony tail. That's a comment based on your preferences - which, really, never reflect well on you even outside of exchanges; they just look worse in the context of an exchange.

3. COMMENT ON YOUR GIFT - In the last two years, I've been seeing gifts go unacknowledged all over the place. I think this might be the height of rude in an exchange. You might not like your gift, but you should at least let the creator know you saw it.

3.5. So you hate your gift... - Fine, it happens. Not everyone is a strong creator. Pick out a phrase or two you like and note them, or choose an event in the fic you *did* like, and use that for your comment to your gifter. Say something positive and thank them. You don't have to squee. You don't have to lie. But an effort was made on your behalf and you should thank your gifter for that much. If your gifter sees through your good comments and knows you didn't like the gift, at least they know you saw it. Most creators are dying to know what her giftee thinks, and if it's good or bad, knowing is the most important thing. Plus, again, at least acknowledging your gift makes you look like less of an asshole. ^_^

3.75. Lighten up on your gifter - Sometimes, it seems like people expect the perfect gift in an exchange. Try to remember that your creator isn't psychic (probably). Your gifter can only create based on what was in your sign-up. If some of the elements you asked for are in your gift, and no elements you specifically forbade, give your creator points for that and try to enjoy your gift as it's given.

4. If you read or looked, comment! - Lurkers, this one's for you. Say something, even if it's just "Enjoyed" or "Thank you". Exchange gifts are not like regular works where the creators control the entire piece from start to finish, and, therefore, should be happy with their result, regardless of how many comments it gets. Exchange gifts usually cause creators to step outside their comfort zones or to try something new. Most creators work hard to create just the right piece for someone, and on a deadline. In other words, there's usually more blood, sweat and tears in an exchange piece than usual. Make the extra effort. Comment.

5. Remember where you're posting - If you're reading a gift's replies and you see an icon you love, please don't tell someone you love her icon and then forget to comment on the gift. In other words, don't start up side conversations without first making sure you let the creator know what you thought of the gift. It's just another seriously rude thing I see both in exchanges and on posted creations in general.

Now, please don't interpret the above as messages just for [info] snupin_santa-ers. I've been in and watched all sorts of exchanges. I'm speaking from years of reading along, not as some targeted message to [info - community] lupin_snape members. Also, please note, these are my suggestions for commenters and readers. There's no rule here you have to follow.

That said? Don't forget to Stuff the Stockings... ~_^

BloMo29: Dogs, fandoms and me.... [Nov. 29th, 2009|11:57 pm]
[mood |curious]
[music |Storm Chasers]

Today is the last dogs day. Mostly, I'm relieved, because we were able to be around for them 24-7 while my sibling traveled, and that availability ends tomorrow. They're a lot of fun when you have time to devote to them (well, let's face it, the SO had more time to devote to them than I did, but still), but I'd feel bad having dogs full-time on our schedule. Still...*pang*

*****
[info - personal] karasu_hime asked "How is it after all these years, you still have so much love for Lupin_Snape? Why not go to a new fandom? Why don't you branch out in other fandoms?"

Good questions...get ready for some babble.

My only other major fandom was X-Files, and I was pretty much a lurker, although my love for novel-length fic was solidified there. I put my toes in the participatory waters, but there was a lot I didn't understand about fandoms then. Luckily, XF was a starter fandom for 90% of the participants, so there was a lot of understanding to go around.

I think I was so very into XF because the series was lacking for me in a lot of ways. I wanted to see Mulder and Scully happy, and, of course, they were miserable on TV. I firmly believed that they were building such a convoluted history with one another that they were ruined for other people. They'd have huge chunks of their lives they couldn't really explain to other people, kind of like soldiers who have seen combat - unless you've been there, it's very hard to understand.

Anyway, that's why I kept seeking out the fan fic. XF fandom was big on post-episode fics, which helped fill a niche in a bad episode, and it was big on longer stories that tried to tie together all the diverging plot threads that we now know Chris Carter had no intention of tying together himself. There was *need* there.

When I went looking for HP fic, the books were unfinished and I wanted to read more of the boy hero and his friends. I was jones-ing for some good fic to tide me over, and I thought HP fandom would be similar to XF. I was wrong - the early days of fandom saw a lot of bad writing and unfinished WiPs - but I was still able to ferret out some good stuff, of course. It was a long wait between GoF and OotP.

Meanwhile, I tend to compartmentalize entertainment. I can find straight-up fiction off a book shelf. What I couldn't get (or couldn't figure out how to get) was a story with some actual sex between the characters that I wanted to have sex, dangit! So, I tended to gravitate toward the R and NC17 ratings when I looked for fic. That worked out fine in XF, but in HP, I was all about the kids when I first entered fandom, and after a while, reading sex adventures with kids started to bother me. Personally, I think 15-17 is a little young to be having sex, but stories that aged the kids up didn't always ring true to me.

Then I accepted slash into my life.

I love Snape and Lupin together because I haven't met two characters so well suited to being each others' happy endings. Writers often unconsciously create connections, themes and metaphors in their works, and I think Rowling didn't realise how well she had suited Snape and Lupin - two survivors of the first war, schoolmates, touched by darkness, lonely outsiders, half-bloods, impoverished, and Snape has practical skills that can help Lupin while Lupin has social skills that can help Snape.

Maybe if I find two other characters that I feel desperately need to be with each other, I will go looking at another fandom. But I doubt I would ever love Snape and Lupin any less. In fact, I look for Snapes and Lupins in all the entertainment I peruse now. They've become baseline characters for me.

To go back to Karasu's other questions, I seek out fandoms when the entertainment somehow commands my dedication without fully satisfing me. I watched Buffy the Vampire Slayer around the same time as XF, but I never went into the Buffy fandom because the show alone hit that spot inside me that said "this is enough".

I think I've also stayed so long in HP because it's a book series. I was able to read to immerse myself in the world, learn the terminology and how it works through repetition of reading, which then gave me the confidence to eventually write in the HP world. Visual fandoms are much harder for me to become "proficient" at writing or discussing, so I'm more likely to end up lurking. Maybe now that I've had a taste of being social in a fandom, I'm less interested in going back to lurking.

And as for adding other fandoms to the one I'm in now, I love grazing in real life when it comes to food, but not with fic. I want to read everything that pertains to a subject in which I'm interested. That's why I had to compartmentalize HP by eventually finding an OTP - there was far too much to read and see and I have the kind of grab-hands that want it all, now. Only, it's unrealistic for me to even try to enjoy all of fandom, so if I can't have it all, I'll just have this little OTP piece with occasional look-sees into the wider fandom. Splitting my focus among several fandoms would send me loopy.

So, I guess if I can find a niche some day in a new fandom with a firm OTP and a canon in which I feel well-versed, I'll branch out. Until then...Snape/Lupin 4evah!

BloMo28: Buying BL books.... [Nov. 28th, 2009|08:47 pm]
[Tags|]
[mood |working]
[music |dogs hacking]

I could go on and on and on about this, giving lots of details and links, but you know, after a couple years at this, I have a method that works for me:

Put everything on pre-order at Amazon.

Yes, I know Amazon has some potential lurking evil, but I am monitoring them and if their evil ever becomes full-fledged, then I'll figure out something new. Until then, pre-order works for me. I have a card I can dedicate to it, the titles come out sporadically enough that I'm not actually spending the total amount of my preorder at once (far from it), and Amazon guarantees that I'll receive the lowest price the book was at throughout the pre-order period. If I buy a book at $10, and at some point, it goes on sale for $9, I receive a $1 refund notice. Nice!

And Amazon generally offers the BL books from 20% to 38% off. Not a bad deal when I still want to support the BL publishers by buying their books from a marketplace that gives them credit for the sale. I feel like I receive a discount and the publishers still make some money, which is a bit more fair to me than having to purchase the books full-priced from a publisher storefront like Akadot (which is DMP's store site).

I know pre-ordering isn't ideal for everyone, and OMG you can end up with a lot of mail to follow from Amazon (you have to approve some delays and not others, and I have no idea why), but it is nice to have a new title or three show up every month, and it's nice to know you WILL get a copy if Amazon decides to order only the bare minimum of books from the publisher.

Of course, this method works best for someone like me, who's likely to read or try to find most BL books eventually. I definitely became tired of hunting, hunting, hunting for the books and the best prices. Amazon lets me be lazy about it at a discount. Huzzah!

November 30's BloMo will be about making good comments/giving good feedback in holiday exchanges (and in general), because December 1 will see most holiday exchanges getting underway and there will be a rush of excited commenting. Also, the Snupin_Santa lurkers might want to try to come out and participate in Stuff the Stockings, so a confidence-boosting guidance post might help them.

If you have any feedback/commenting tips you'd like me to consider for my post, please let me know what they are before November 30.

BloMo27: US BL publishers.... [Nov. 27th, 2009|11:57 pm]
[Tags|]
[mood |predatory]
[music |P&P 2005 Soundtrack]

A while back, I wrote an overview of the BL publishers that existed about two years ago. Time for a quick update!

DMP's BL imprints are June, 801 Media and Doki Doki.

June used to be known for pretty tame BL fare, but now it has become a better mix of tame-to-racy. 801 Media is still the imprint to go to for more explicit stories. Doki Doki is an imprint created to cater directly to a Japanese publisher. Most of the DD releases have been BL tales, but not all, and most of the BL titles have been the kind of tame June used to be known for. Still, people seem to appreciate the DD titles for what they are.

Aurora Publishing has the Deux line as well as the Luv Luv line for Girl Love titles.

I think if Deux existed on its own, it might still be a healthy company. As it is, Deux releases have slowed to a crawl with the rest of Aurora's titles, and I'm seriously worried for Aurora's survival. The Duex imprint put out some excellent titles over the years. You should look into them soon, before they all go out of print and everyone in the world starts chasing the titles for stupid prices.

Tokyopop's BL titles usually end up under the BLU imprint (this could confuse Snupin fans ~_^).

Tokyopop has admitted that their BLU titles always sell well, yet the company treats the imprint like a red-headed step-child (for those who don't recognize the saying, like it doesn't belong to them). The web site, long neglected, is just now showing signs of life this month, and releases have still been coming from the imprint, even if it's only about 1 title a month. BLU titles are rarely anthologies, and they usually have only mild BL content, although there are a couple exceptions to this.

Yaoi Press - the publisher's name kinda speaks for itself.

There is nothing but Original English Language BL to be found here, ranging from super-dark to sickeningly sweet - in fact, most of the YP titles exist at one of the two extremes.

Netcomics - This company has an interesting set-up. You can read chapters of a book online for very little money. When a title becomes popular enough (and, probably when Netcomics has gathered up enough capital in general), it is then printed and offered for sale as a book.

Netcomics has put out some eclectic work over the years, ranging from Korean titles with only implied BL to some fairly explicit works. You never quite know what you're going to see next from NC, and their release schedule is sporadic, with no titles for months and then three at a time. I'd say that this is the place to go for edgy material, exciting new artists and a-typical BL reads.

Yen Press began offering some BL titles late last year.

They seem to have taken to Lily Hoshino, and their other BL title so far is also fairly explicit, so I'm hoping for good things from Yen Press next year in terms of BL. They put out nice, compact little books.

Go! Comi thinks it sells BL titles.

No, seriously, Go! Comi's only true mature BL offering is Wendy Pini's Masque of the Red Death. Cantarella is considered mild BL at best and then the most recent books GC listed as BL this year were...not. They were general stories with very bishie characters. I'm not sure where Go! Comi is headed next with BL, but I'm hoping it will at least swerve back into true BL waters.

Media Blaster's BL book imprint is Kitty Media. I don't suggest going to the site. In fact, just go here, it will make your life easier.

Kitty media books are generally the most explicit tales out there, and while I hammered the company a couple years ago, I have to admit, the books have steadily improved at KM. Series are published from the beginning, rather than starting in the middle, and the translations and paper quality seem to have improved. The books themselves are still among the smallest in size, but good paper goes a long way toward readability.

Yaoi Generation is a new publisher, dating back to last year.

So far, YG has put out 4 volumes of a 5-book series over the past year and a half. It finally announced its next two titles around the time the 4th book came out. Honestly, I don't see this glacial pace as a bad plan. Sure, I'd love to have lots of new titles to pick and choose from, but I'd much rather the publisher take it slow and steady than to see it put out a bunch of work all at once and then fold from too much overhead. I was surprised when YG announced itself just as the economic crisis started, and even more surprised when the first book actually came out. YG seems to have a plan, and I think as long as the people behind YG stick to the plan, YG can become an exciting new company - one I'll still be talking about in two more years. ~_^

BloMo26: T-Day.... [Nov. 26th, 2009|05:09 am]
[mood |hungry]
[music |dogs snoring]

I wonder how many National Blog Posting Month entries today will be quickie "Happy Thanksgiving" notes, or will make Thanksgiving the topic or will just have Thanksgiving in it?

Because hey, no one loves to reduce a holiday down to math more than me.

Have a good one, loves. May Morimoto himself guide your hands if you're cooking. *gobble gobble*

BloMo25: Song of the Moment and some doubts.... [Nov. 25th, 2009|11:59 pm]
[mood |listless]
[music |Matthew Good - Avalanche]

This will be hard, but I thought I'd talk about a song I've been pondering a while:

Meet Me on the Equinox lyrics and video link )

Ok, I can see Severus starting the song and Remus finishing it, but I don't necessarily like the "Everything ends" chorus. It's certainly a good canon song for them, and I can see around "everything ends" by it meaning something more elusive in the future or as Severus' doubts. But what do you all think? Add it to my mental Snape/Lupin soundtrack or not?

And we'll just forget what really inspired this song, natch. ~_^

In other news, We've come up with a contest for [info] snupin_santa readers this year called Stuff the Stockings. Interested? Check it out!

BloMo24: OMG HOW DID IT GET THIS LATE?.... [Nov. 24th, 2009|11:56 pm]
[mood |silly]
[music |dogs farting]

I have on "Glove You So Much" OPI nail polish. It's a lovely, wine colour with more brown than purple in the red, and it shimmers just a bit. Only I put it on too thick and have bubbles, which mar the effect.

Is there any way to put on more than one coat of nail polish without bubbling? Man!
