So, I'm faffing about avoiding doing a proper transcription of this article because I need my paper holder, otherwise I get backache and headaches from trying to read the freaking article. But, having just read my JF, so much concentrated insanity made my head explode anyway, so I dug out the article and found one of my favourite sections.
And really, are these the words of a man under PR's thumb?
[talking about his removing of the page containing Leviticus, 18:11 from hotel bibles] and has he ever felt disapproved of there because of the openess of his hostility to homophobia? "Some people there are bewildered and don't know what I'm on about. There are many gay actors who will sidle away from me at a party. There's an actress, an English one oddly enough, who came up to me and said, 'Ian, you do know that I'm not gay in hollywood, only Europe.'"
So strategic self-repression is still the norm there? "Yes, but only among actors. And they are encouraged in this by their minders and advisers, who might themselves be gay. There is nothing wrong with being an openly gay writer, or director, or agent, high up in the studio system and donating to charitable gay causes. But if you are an actor, all the advice is that this is death to your career. There are actors of all ages who lie about their sexuality. They lie to the media, who connive with it and perpetuate it. It's disgusting and bewildering." - Saturday Times Magazine, 26/04/03 (Embolding is my own work.)
Yeah, he's so been bought out by PR... :rolls eyes so hard they rattle:
As soon as I find my paper holder, I'll transcribe the rest and scan the pictures in. I risk the headache of dooom if I try it without.
