Harry Potter not-wank

On NPR yesterday, there were a bunch of young kids-- probably 12 at most, though I didn't catch the introduction-- talking about the next Potter book and their theories. It was just like reading Potterwank, only in a crazy catch, the kids who disagreed didn't pull out their intellectual credentials or get violently angry. Huh.

(Someone still wanted Ron to die, though, which I found amusing.)

Fanfiction: Fun hobby or Twilight of the Gods?

Applegal posts a question about fanfiction at the Nanowrimo boards.

People reply, the thread is happy, and then...

Grammar con Queso and Holbrook tell everyone how much fanfiction sucks, at great length, and also how illegal it is because they've talked to lawyers.

Grammar started it off with this:

Detest isn't quite strong enough. There are myriad reasons I loathe fanfic.

1) It's theft of intellectual property. The characters are not yours whether you want to write about them or not. They do not belong to you.

2) It's copyright infringement. Like it or not, it is.

3) It's in extremely bad taste. The original author crafted characters and should have the right to do with those characters what he or she wants. The author should not have to put up with a bunch of wannabees co-opting those characters for their own purposes. The author should have the right, even beyond copyright and intellectual property, to decide how his characters behave. As much as you may love them, you don't know them better than the author.

4) It's lazy. You want to write? Create your own damn characters. Can't do that? Watch TV.

5) It's hypocritical. It absolutely boils my blood to see people who have stolen characters from an author whine about other people stealing their ideas. That, dear reader, is known as a karmic smackdown. It's equally hypocritical to see someone put a copyright symbol on something containing characters and ideas from someone else's work. If you don't respect copyright, why should anyone respect yours?

6) It's lousy, or at least the grand majority of it is. Why wade through that much chaff?

I have, to date, never seen a single legitimate reason for fanfic. It is, on a moral level, equivalent to film, software, and music piracy. "But I wanna..." or "That's not the story I really want to read..." are crappy reasons.

Good enough? Please, let the flaming commence.

And oh, it does.

And then there's this little gem if you keep going on:

On the other side are, well, I'm not about to start slinging mud, because we all have our little twists, but on the other side are ... the others. Slash. *shudder* And if you think I'm anti-slash because I'm anti-gay, you're wrong. I would shudder just as much if someone wrote (and come to think of it, they probably have) some kind of reverse slash where they turn gay characters straight.

And finally, don't get me started on Japan. Japanese sex culture is f'd up. And if that makes me a racist or something, then I guess I'm a racist. But you look at some of the popular hentai stuff on J-List and tell me pre-pubescent rape scenes aren't f'd up. Seriously, dude.

Ah, November. You're gonna be a fun month.
