24, 11:00 p.m. to midnight

Nice opening -- they picked up exactly where they left off last hour (well, yeah, they usually do, of course, but this time it was a bit more evident than usual)with everyone watching the bomb explode and reacting to the explosion. Then Tony's speech followed. And it was a nice speech. I think he has some good leadership skills.

I really can't decide if Yusef Auda is a plant or just a schmuck from some other government agency trying to do his job. He has no facial hair, but I have nver seen him with a computer, so I don't know if he uses a Mac or PC. Even considering later developments in the episode, I'm not sure. Anyone else have any ideas?

My first thought when I saw "Berlin": Germany - Nina!

There is so much subtext going on during the Michelle/Carrie catfight, with Tony in the middle. So eventually he sided with Carrie, or rather, against Michelle, and Carrie's taking advantage of that. Or? The only thing I'm certain of is that one of those two girls is covering something up.

Back to Palmer HQs - What was that going on between Mike and Lynne? Those were some very interesting looks. Mike is pretty obviously much more hawkish than the President. Should we read anything into that?

Is anyone else really excited to see Mr. Sutherland playing a bad guy in Phone Booth? I think Basic looks pretty good, too.

I wish I knew what Sayed Ali was yelling at Jack in the corridor. Even though I think he probably was telling the truth (but I'm not 100% sure about that, because after all, this is 24), I bet whatever he was yelling could have shed some light on some things.

Those of you who have more insight into secured facilities: are the bathrooms not usually wired? I mean, I would hate to have to listen to surveillance tapes of the CTU bathroom (doesn't that sound like something Kersh would assign to Mulder on a bad day), but if they don't do that, the bathrooms would quickly turn in to a hotbed of interdepartment intrigue, right? The ones in our law firm do and we don't even handle government secrets.

I kept thinking something has to happen during this hour to keep Jack involved with CTU. Something has to happen to keep Kate involved in the story. And something has to happen to put Kim in a precarious situation. Then in the second half of the show, Wham! Sayed Ali's been shot and Jack's sneaking back in to investigate! Wham! Kim managed to get herself into a hostage situation! Wham! Kate has to be the person the baddies are demanding to see for Jack to get the info about the tape. The Jack thing is par for the course considering what a renegade he was last season, though I don't understand how he got back in without clearance (oh yeah, these are they same people who let Terri wander around last season) but the Kate thing seemed contrived to me. I hope they find a way to work that in without it continuing to seem that way.

As for Kim, well, the less said the better, I guess. Suffice it to say that I was not only yelling at my TV, I was jumping up and down and yelling, and my language got pretty bad. I'm even embarrased to look at my notes.

That was the colonel talking to Jack on the phone, right?

And I yelled again when OMG Tony pulled a gun on Jack and OMG Jack hit Tony! OMG

Previews:

Hmmmm ... I didn't see much there. Of course, someone is following Jack but what the heck does he expect? Did I miss anything else that looked interesting?

And yes, I appreciate the irony in the fact that I watch 24 and then turn off the news.

About Mike and Lynne -- I'm not sure. Mike's been with him forever, and was one of the few he could really trust in the first season. But he really appears to have some sort of hidden agenda. I want to believe in Lynne.

I'm really tired of Kim's never-ending peril. It's just one damned thing after another, and I'm afraid I no longer care.

They're teasing a possible romance between Jack and Kate, which I'm not sure I'd buy, especially after he drags her into the thick of what promises to be a dangerous situation. What was he thinking???

And that whole soap opera back at CTU -- I thought Tony and Michelle had admitted they had 'feelings' for each other back when it was all, 'So this is it, we're all going to die'... He's certainly not acting like it now. Carrie is looking decidedly un-trustworthy.

I assume what Sayed Ali was shouting at Jack was more-or-less 'Murdering SOB, Allah curse you!' At that point he still thought Jack had had his baby killed. I agree that he was probably telling the truth about the tape being faked -- he didn't strike me as a contract terrorist for any government, he was definitely a zealot with a mission.

I'm afraid I suspect that there's something of a Shadow Government lurking in the White House, with the agenda of starting a war in the Arab world. I don't think Mike was with them all along, but I suspect they managed to recruit him by appealing to his 'patriotism'. We shall see.

In spite of the fact that this show is incredibly misogynistic, I'm still watching and still way too eager to talk over the possible ramifications of each new twist!
