Welcome back from Dragon Con, everyone! I hope you had a great time.
This Get Rich Slowly article looks like a good starting point for discussion. I know some people would make the argument that collecting fannish collectibles is an investments. In most cases, I don’t agree as I think only a very few of them retain or increase in value. But investment aspect aside, I’m not opposed to collecting for myself, as long as I am actually using the collected things in some way – either as something to read or as decoration or DVDs I watch again. I basically follow the Clean Sweep philosophy: If you’re going to keep it, don’t stick it in a box at the bottom of a closet and never look at it. Only keep the things you care enough about to honor by at least occasionally looking at them. That said, I really need to clean out my closets. ;)
There was a Season 3 Top Chef marathon on Bravo yesterday, so now I am completely caught up with that show. I’ll go back to watching Heroes tonight (unless I watch a movie).
Because I was watching Heroes and Top Chef I didn’t watch any movies. I now have 4 of them to watch this week. I guess I’ll be fairly busy!
Dad and his wife are back from Egypt. Dad took 146 pictures with the digital camera he bought for the trip. I don’t think he’s ever taken even half that many pictures on a trip before.

Egypt is apparently picturesque.
As I've told Littlebitca (who's also a big fan), the real tragedy of cooking reality shows on TV is we can't judge for ourselves. Dancing, modeling, singing, trivia -- we can at least decide how good a person is. Unfortunately I don't watch any of those, just the occasional cooking show. Someday the scientists will wake up and realize the enormous demand for a TV with Taste-o-vision. :)
Egypt is either picturesque or full of parking lots. While scanning my dad's slides from the last 50 years or so, I discovered he has a penchant for photographing parking lots and runways. I've thought about collaberating with him on a photographic retrospective of the American and Mexican parking lot.
You are absolutely correct about the cooking shows! Taste-o-vision would be wonderful, and probably much less fattening than the real thing. I'll try to pimp this concept out to the scientists on my flist and see if we get any bites.
I'm waiting to see when Howie gets sent packing.
And, heh, wait until your dad truly realizes you can take pretty much as many pictures as you want with a digital camera because you aren't wasting any film. Of course, it can take a while to sort through a thousand, but hey!
Hopefully Howie gets sent packing soon. He's not the most obnoxious reality show contestant I've ever seen, but he's definitely obnoxious enough that he needs to go soon. I'm really sad Tre got booted. The restaurant he works in, Abacus, is just a couple of blocks from where I work.
Apparently the camera dad got holds 450 pictures, so I kind of admire his restraint. There had to have been at least that many parking lots for him to photograph in Egypt! | |
