Friday Five, Project Runway, Top Design [Sep. 12th, 2008|10:40 pm]
[Tags|, , ]

[info]thefridayfive:
1. If you were to die today, what would your last words be?
Good bye. Remember I love you all even if I’m not physically here with you. And please vote for Obama.

2. What would you want your epitaph to say?
Liz:
born - 1960; moved on to the next great adventure - 2008.

3. What song would you want played at your funeral?
I would rather my friends have a party and do something fun and adventurous in my honor than have a funeral. However, I understand that funerals are more about the survivors than the deceased, so maybe they could do something funeralish while they are doing something fun and adventurous. I would like the songs to be more comforting to them than anything to do with me. After my grandmother died, I listed to Escape Club’s I’ll be There a lot and it provided me a lot of comfort, so that would probably be my first suggestion.

4. In lieu of flowers, what should loved ones do in your honor?
I wouldn’t object to donations to groups that legitimately promote literacy, especially for minorities or to groups that support equal rights for women. However, I would also be happy if people used the money they’d spend on flowers to do something they haven’t done because they were afraid of trying it.

5. What unfinished business would you wrap up?

If I only have the one day, there’s not a lot I could do. I’d call family members and friends and tell them I love them and pay bills. I’d clean up my home. I’d find a new home for D Kitty. I suspect that would take most of the day. If I had a couple of days, at least, I’d probably either take my dad and go visit my sister or maybe try to get all of us someplace crazy and adventurous in addition to taking care of bills and D Kitty.

Nightmares, Project Runway, Top Design [Sep. 4th, 2008|11:29 am]

I don’t know what happened to NPR, but they’ve gone all Mr. Hyde on me. This morning I had to turn my clock radio off because they kept repeating the most offensive parts of the Palin speech on a continuous loop. Or maybe NPR hasn’t gone as Mr. Hyde as I thought and they’re subversively repeating the worst of it in order to get the sane people who want to help get this country back on its feet all riled up. I know they got me riled up.

After I turned the radio off, I went back to sleep briefly and had a horrible nightmare. In it, there were white fuzzy caterpillars all over my condo ceilings. And one of my bathrooms was completely inoperable. I wanted to spray the caterpillars to kill them, but 1) the bathtub and sink in the inoperable bathroom were overflowing and the shower curtain had fallen down and 2) I was afraid the caterpillars would fall on me and sting me. Then a sudden mutant ladybug infestation started and I woke up abruptly as I was trying to get out of there without touching a caterpillar or ladybug.

Cornwall Cam, Margarita Ranch, Workout, HGTV Design Star, SYTYTCD, ABDC, From Gs to Gents, PR [Aug. 4th, 2008|11:25 am]
[Tags|, , , , , , ]

Charles Winpenny is back from his holiday in France and has some great pictures up on the Cornwall Cam, including some from his holiday.

Dad, his wife and I went to Margarita Ranch on Sunday and it was very good – nice atmosphere and excellent food and service.

I pulled a muscle while working out on Saturday and it still hurts a lot, especially when I laugh, or breathe, or the cat lies on my stomach and digs his little paw in right where the sore muscle is... Poor D Kitty didn’t get much cuddle time this weekend.

No movies. I think I have all comedies and laughing hurts. Plus I just was not in the mood for them.

The only TV I watched was HGTV Design Star )

I’m a little behind, so I’ll use this post to comment briefly on the other shows I watched this week.

1. If you could change one life-changing event in the life of someone important to you, would you?
No. Unless I am the person in question, because then the consequences belong to the person who’s doing the changing. But otherwise, absolutely not. I cannot know every way in which the event affected this person. There may have been positive consequences that outweigh the negatives and I’d be taking those away from them. (Exception: If I knew a kid who made an outcry statement to me that they were being abused, I’d do everything in my power to get them out of that situation, including reporting to CPS, even if the person the kid accused of abusing them was a good friend.)

2. Which do you think is easier to do, being friends for many years, or being life partners for many years?
Your life partner should first and foremost be your best friend, so I don’t see any difference.

3. Have you ever walked away from someone you considered a friend?
Yes.

4. If you had to choose between telling the truth and hurting a friend or lying and making them happy, which would you choose?
That depends. If it’s a little white lie I might go with it. If it’s about seeing their husband kissing another woman, I’m going to tell the truth.

5. Which would you rather hear--the truth which will hurt, or the comforting lie?
Again, it depends. If it’s a situation I can change (including removing myself from the situation), I need to hear the truth. If it’s that you hate the type of toy I put in your goodie bag, I’d prefer you not tell me.

Name five fandoms that you're not (yet) in, but which seem intriguing.

You’d think I’d be all over Supernatural, since it’s horror-genre, but I’ve watched it a few times and it doesn’t work for me. Can’t get into Who or its derivative, either. I tried to watch old Who a few times and the way it’s staged irritates the heck out of me. I don’t really know what else is out there. I’m not really watching scripted TV anymore, at least until Dirty Sexy Money comes back. I could use a book fandom to get into, though. I could use some suggestions. Any ideas, anyone?

My horoscope for today ended ominously:

“...[Today, e]veryone returns to his or her usual wonderful self - though there are no guarantees about the cat.

Food/Diet/Exercise, American Idol, Project Runway [Feb. 28th, 2008|02:09 pm]
[Tags|, , , , ]

I found out this morning that the firm will pay $50 a month towards a fitness club membership. So Monday I’m going with a co-worker to the club that’s closest to Mockingbird Station. I think that if I start using a recumbent bike again, it will not only help me with the weight loss, but will help get my knees back to not hurting so much. I’m really excited about it.

I am also considering weighing myself. Last time I did this (about 12 years ago), I went 3 months without dropping a pound, but went down 3 dress sizes at the same time. It was weird, even though I know it was because I was putting on muscle, and discouraging. Then when I finally did start dropping weight, I got obsessive about weighing. I don’t want that to happen again. I’m already starting to notice a little obsessiveness with regard to tracking what I eat.

Miscellaneous Stuff, with Brief Mentions of American Idol and Project Runway [Feb. 21st, 2008|09:49 am]

Things and People I love extra special much today:

My bus driver

The Daily Plate, a free nutrition and exercise tracking website. (Seriously, it gives you most of what ediets, etc charge you for for free if you put up with a few minor ads.) They even have support groups (and you can form your own - I think a fangirls and fanboys support group there would be awesome) and meals and recipes and active forums.

Simon Cowell

RAMIELE MULABAY!!!

Thing I do not love quite so much:

Today’s rainy, cold weather.

I only watched a few minutes of the Project Runway Reunion Show )

American Idol, Project Runway, Quizzes, Anthony Bourdain, Tarot [Jan. 16th, 2008|10:51 am]
[Tags|, , , , ]

This is probably going to be a pretty short entry. I watched some of the American Idol premiere, but I never have much to say about the auditions. D hates them and refuses to watch with me. He did come in during the second hour and I fell asleep around 8:15 and missed most of it. It seems I missed a Princess Leia cos-player (actually two of them and one was male???). I did not miss the silly girl with the rehearsed anti-Simon meltdown. One of these days one of the auditioners with that agenda is going to get effusive praise from Simon and be rejected by Paula and Randy and still storm off screeching invectives at Simon. I’m looking forward to that day, at least in part because it might mean an end to that nonsense. Tonight’s episode is here in my hometown of Dallas. I remember hearing on the radio about the traffic jams the auditions caused. Whee! I am much more excited about Project Runway. The previews look fierce!

Miscellaneous Fun Links:

Here’s a fun little quiz on how good your powers of observation are. Apparently, the average person gets 7 out of 25. I got 15 out of 25 and I can't believe some of the ones I missed!

Long, but very good interview with Anthony Bourdain.

The Gummy Bear Tarot. It’s almost more adorable than I can bear. (Sorry!)

Cat, 60 Minutes, Weekend Movies & Reality TV Roundup [Jan. 7th, 2008|11:44 am]
[Tags|, , , , , , , , , ]

I have a pair of jeans with a drawstring that I’ve worn many times. Guess cat didn’t notice them until this morning when I was getting dressed. He took one look, thought TOY!!! and was on his hind legs batting at my drawstrings in the blink of an eye. I couldn’t tell him to get down. All I could do was laugh. It was a fun start to Monday morning.

Okay, reality check here - was it just me, or did Andy Rooney come off sounding like he was trying to get away with being a racist prick by tossing out a bunch of names, including his own (and note to Mr. Rooney -- I think both our Presidents named Andrew sometimes went by “Andy”), to obscure the fact that he can’t envision a person with a (non white anglo-saxon protestant) name such as Barack Obama as President? If it’s not just me and that’s really what he was doing, I hope someone calls him out on it.

Is it wrong that I kind of wanted to punch Mr. Rooney in the face last night?

Movies, Medical stuff - ick! KidNation, Kitchen Nightmares, Project Runway [Nov. 29th, 2007|11:28 am]
[Tags|, , , ]

I can’t see Awake, ever. I can’t even watch the commercials for it. I have to change the channel when they come on because even just that freaks me out horrifically. I have had a lot of surgery and unfortunately, I have experienced a mild form of anesthesia awareness, and the mere idea that anyone could possibly experience a more severe form of it just makes me kind of !@#$#$@%$. I bring it up because I just read this Slate article, which discusses the phenomenon. And I am now sufficiently creeped out and distressed to last me the whole day, thank you very much.

Last night’s TV would be a better thing to discuss, yeah?

I skipped ANTM and watched KidNation instead, because the ads had been promising Taylor’s comeuppance. and that was something I had to see, if it actually happened )
