I'm slightly behind schedule on my NaNoWriMo project.
As in ~3k words.
Still think I'll make the deadline (especially since I've come up with a different segment; it'll probably end up being the last 20-30% of the whole project), but sometimes my brain is not helping. In particular:
As if to celebrate my conclusion (and pending French essay on the topic) that non-fiction is inherently dishonest, I come up with...an idea for a non-fiction book.
It'll be called Managing the Assholes. Secretly, it will be an explication of "Paris School" critical theory (especially as it relates to politics) for general audiences, but it'll be wrapped-up and packaged as amusingly snarkalicious and deliberately provocative (starting with the title) easy reading. The basic concept: some of us are just assholes (and yes, I'm definitely including myself), which is a fact that most social and political theories either overlook (socialism, communism, social democracy, theocracy) or deal with in exactly the wrong way (capitalism, Objectivism, Libertarian Party garbage). The question (OK, OK, a question) for any model of society, then, is this: How do we deal with the assholes?
Of course, this will have to depend on what type of asshole is being considered. This will let me structure the book around chapters based on the various types of assholes and proper societal ways of dealing with them productively: type-A personality and/or Machiavellian assholes (give them their own little sandbox to play dominance games in where they can't bother anyone else), sociopathic assholes (provide a space...maybe the same as the type-A capitalists [/snark] [yeah, right, like this book could ever have a [/snark] before the end]), ordinary no-social-skills assholes (available and needs-sensitive social-skills training with the option of a nice little place and role far away from everyone else), and garden-variety, raging-egotist assholes (the best option being, as far as I can tell, to make us commentators and writers and just make sure we never get our hands on any real power over anyone, ever). The latter case will have two chapters at the very least, partially because I am one and partially because it will give me an excuse to devote time to writing about Saint Oscar Wilde, Supreme Deity of All Things Snarky and Self-Centered as a perfect example of how to make an asshole productive in a way that is ultimately of major social benefit.
White people, heterosexuals and men will each have [our/their/somewhere-in-between] own chapter, of course. |
