My first banning! ::hugs it, pets it and calls it george::
I guess disagreeing with <lj user="pyratejenni"> over the WisCon situation was not allowed? (gee, maybe she should put "do not disagree with the community BNF or you will be banned" in the user info...) |

| On the subject of oppression... |
[Oct. 11th, 2007|04:56 pm] |
|
I've been rereading the F_W post about mamadeb and OMG I'M SO OPPRESSED THAT I HAD TO SIGN UP FOR YULETIDE A DAY LATER...
and I apologize for getting wanky myself. But when someone shrugs off Christmas - or anyone's High Holy Days - with a "eh. it's only dinner and a party" type of statements, I gets my wankiness engaged.
But - here's the question. There's a huge long-ass discussion about whether or not Yuletide is a Christian term and whether it's oppressive/cruel/ethno-centritist to be using that term for a holiday fic exchange. (Altho simply calling anything around the Christmas season a holiday is, in and of itself, religion-centrist, is it not?)
And there were comments that the mods of Yuletide have been approached and not-very-nicely rejected any suggestions of changing the name. But it read to *me* like it was a lot of "Operator", "well I <I>heard</I> they said no..." type of stuff.
Does anyone KNOW if the Yuletide mods have ever been approached? And if yes, what their response was?
Personally, I kinda figure that by calling it a Yuletide exchange, they've done the best they can to remove the Overt Religious References and tried to highlight only the gift-giving part of the season. But YMMV, and I certainly understand that others may interpret it differently. OTOH, I personally can't think of a title (short of This-Is-A-Strictly-NonReligious-Fic-Exchange-That-Occurs-At-The-End-Of-The-Year, which loses something...) that would make EVERYONE happy.

here's the thing with the svmaria wank (and other pseudocides and internet tragedies):
I had a massive personal crisis this summer. Most of you are probably going ????? (that is, assuming you care) - that's because I didn't run off to my LJ/JF/GJ and immediately start posting sobbing stories begging for money and/or gifts. I told the small group of close friends I have thru F_W and my close LJ friends.
And, yes, btw, I also posted links to newspapers supporting what I had posted about. Not to mention one could (if so inclined) check the various IP addys on my posts. I did that without anyone asking. Because this is the Internet, and as people have been desperate to say on the figgy wank, "everyone lies on the Internet".
No, they don't. However, enough do that a request for further information should not break the dam of "how could you?????"
I'm very very VERY cynical of the posts made to communities about "so-and-so just had this enormous/terrible thing happen and we all need to rally around". I suppose it *might* happen, but honestly? When I was in the midst of my crisis, the LAST thing I needed was an "outpouring of support", especially from a large community of people that I may or may not know (thinking of F_W here). From long experience, I've observed the majority (if not all, have never kept track) of public woe-is-me or woe-is-my-friend posts are fraudulent.
So, yes, svmadelyn and seperis and everyone involved with that wank did exactly the right thing. And I'm constantly astonished by the naivete of people.... |

There's a reason I detest Tilly, folks; have detested her for a very long time since I used to play at GAFF (and that was before GAFF moved to EZBoard, so you'll know how long ago that was).
Her most recent post to fandom_debate is Exhibit A, yes?
YAY For Mod!Snacky!
You! New wanky ones! Get the hell off my lawn! :shakes cane: It's enough for me to trot out my 'oldtime wanka' status (even if I don't have Official Old Time Wanka status because I didn't catch the transition from Blurty fast enough) |

FWIW, this is what I posted to funkyhelix's JF:
Let's try this one more time: you didn't just 'report' a flocked post to System - you posted the goddamn thing to your entire friendslist. Whatever your problem is with Fandom_Wank, HnK, the Cabal, I don't know, I don't care.
YOU WERE WRONG.
You don't have the right to post someone else's flocked post to your friends list. If you can't see that, if you can't acknowlege what you did was wrong...
I have nothing more to say. I'm done and I'm gone. |

at the anonymouse whining on DL_A.
We're all fans here, hopefully open minded ones. We are not talking about anything really important in the whole scheme of things.
Um...... respectfully disagree.
There was - is - nothing "open-minded" about MsA's boards and her opinions. Y'all may not have appreciated being considered "crazy", but look at what name calling has come from your side of the fence.
We're homophobic. We're all teenage virgins afraid of teh_cock. We'd all turn our back on Dom and Elijah and their careers would suffer if it were publically known they're gay. We're closeminded. We're all mean skinny bitches; or conversely, we're all mean, fat bitches and they wouldn't fuck us anyway. We're all closeted wanna-be lesbians; we're all teenage Briannas.
I don't see a lot of "open-mindedness" there, anon, sorry.
"Really important in the scheme of things"? Well, you may not think so. If the tinhat behavior was truly just chatter in a tiny private corner of the fandom, I'd close my eyes and pretend it doesn't exist. But it's not. Why is MsA so well-known? How about the FACT that she's posted her theories about Dom and Elijah's sexuality (and their sexual preferences and practices) on nearly every LOTR board out there? How about public stalking of the actors? Exactly *how* many events has MsA and KC been to? How many times have they approached the actors? MsA's letter to Sean? KC/Kit's near-daily calls to Dom's publicist? Their pathetic attempts to be seen as "legitimate media" as opposed to the crazed fans they truly are?
For all her (and many of the participants') claims that they're 'just a small quiet gossip board', they're/you're NOT. MsA has been on a very public campaign to promote her version of reality. IF Dom and/or Elijah are gay, they're closeted FOR A REASON. If they're not, they're NOT. Either way, they're entitled to their privacy. But that seems to be a concept completely foreign to the tinhats, unless it's YOUR privacy that's supposedly violated.
As to that, go thank someone at your own freaking board. |

I posted a response to Lexin, as I was one of those that called her on the "F-W was equally wanky" comment:
Oh,I won't disagree with you that Heidi was entitled to say no. It's her LJ, her right to agree or not.
However, because of previous actions, Heidi has set herself up as HP Charity Central. And to refuse - on very weird reasons, as even I, who am NOT a lawyer, nor do I portray one on TV, understood that Christina was asking for a link, not a fundraiser - left her looking at the very least wanky and at the most hypocritcal.
Now, is that fair to Heidi? Probably not. But you're not going to tell me that Fandom *never* remembered a fan's previous behavior before Fandom_Wank? 'Cos, gee, I've got a couple of people in my home fandom that *still* won't let me forget something I said _once_, in a private setting. Every six months or so, they throw it back in my face. I'd hardly blame that on Fandom_Wank.
So I still don't see where Fandom_Wank, in general, behaved in a wanky fashion. I do see where Heidi would feel hurt and picked on - but, as I said, fans have long memories and she's certainly used her BNF status when it benefitted her friends. That *doesn't* mean she has to 'support' or post about each and every charity case that lands on her doorstep; only that when she refuses, people are going to look at her askance.
What got wanky - and was not either Heidi's fault or in her control - was the 'pile-on' that occured both on Christina's journal (so I'm told; honestly? I have a few personal issues going on and didn't need to upset myself further so I haven't gone to look) and at Fandom_Wank, both by friends of Heidi and various anons. It was an anon that claimed to have called the Mayo Clinic, and an anon that claimed to have called the Illinois Attorney General. Certainly not in Heidi's control.
BUT - it would have been helpful had Heidi posted a "trolling is NOT nice and pls. stop making me look bad by your so-called support" post. She chose not to - again, her choice. As far as I know, she got a couple of very nice and polite comments on her LJ, asking for her help to control the trolling. No one trolled HER. That doesn't mean she's exempt from others - outsiders, such as me - thinking she's not a very nice person.
And I see Heidi's decided to a. find her JF code and b. put her baby's health at risk (she's SUCH a saint!!!!!) to chime in. |

but GAH! I am so sick of Phoenix and assorted-Phoenix wank.

Oh. my. god.
It's an older thread (I was bored, what can I say?) but don't miss the HUGE long-ass lecture on "Why I hate Yaoi". Better yet is the someone-I-don't-recognize threatening to DELETE people who don't respond with proper "respectful" responses!
Who let these idiots come play? Wait - I take that back - they're funny as hell. She thinks Fandom_Wank is the place to be respectful???? |

So... anyone care to explain to me how having keyboard problems means one can't spell, use apostrophes or capitalize? (OK, I'll accept the capitalization - and as is blindingly obvious, I'm rather laxidasical about capitalizations too)
