Some of my LJ friends and I have started a new community called hallowoodsquare to see who can do the best job predicting the events of DH. I've made an announcement about it in my individual journal here.
Check it out and if it looks like (or IS) fun, any help spreading the word would be terrific. :D

| that silly Scholastic shipping poll |
[28 Jun 2007|10:33am] |
|
I'm posting a comment here that I wrote in response to flyingphoenix at the Cornfield because it's pretty far removed from the point-and-laugh that is supposed to be the purpose of that community.
It seems that some shippers would like a place to interract with members of "the opposition", so I magnimously offer up space for it! :p
before it was linked on PK or HF H/Hr was already in the lead
Well, those aren't the only places that H/Hr shippers gather, are they?
all the H/G and R/Hr kids would and in fact did vote and manipulate the poll with a bot
I don't know about you, but with no personal knowledge of who may have used a bot or for what reason, I'm not prepared to say anything firm about the culprit(s) or the motivation. If I were to speculate, however, I'd guess -- based on the fact that the bot spamming wasn't the least bit subtle -- that whoever did it was more into the lulz than anything else. It might not have even been a person/group with a dog in the fight at all.
If we leave all HP sites out and their fanbase then people vote surprisingly enough still for H/Hr.
I'm sorry but I don't think this poll can be used as any sort of indicator of what the percentages in favor of any ship really are. If you look elsewhere on Scholastic's site you'll see where visitors can choose 7-word-reviews of the different books that they like. Look here and you'll find that two of top "vote getters" for HBP are OBHWF-appreciative. ;)
Anyway, it seems to me that it should be clear that some of your shipmates did an exceedingly silly thing by voting thousands of times to "prove" the primacy of H/Hr or something. They did it for fun and there really wasn't any "harm" in it, even the motivation to upset opposing shippers (although, take my word for it, most of us who were die-hards in the ship debates truly just found it funny). But, what's still hysterical is now getting ANGRY at Emerson or the bot spammers or whoever. Even IF they were doing it for the same silly reasons, how is that any different.
Just admit that some of your cohorts were being twits. I don't hesitate in the least to say that Emerson was being unnecessarily abrasive and a boatload of the comments at Mugglenet from "my side" make me *headdesk*. Hard. Repeatedly.
Ow!
[btw, am posting and deleting this quickly so you get it but am going to repost at my own journal because this sort of earnest discussion is wildly out of place in this community].

[08 Dec 2006|09:28am] |
Oh dear. Here I've been, not only mostly too busy to do much internet posting of any kind on top of not wanting to poke any Harmonians with wank bait (partly because of the couple I've become fairly fond of) but vanceone, in his infinite ability to make his shipmates and website partners look bad, just had to post this in the comments of the recent hp_cornfield entry.
*blinks* Say WHAT? You want me to debate you on canon of H/Hr? Fine, come to my site, then. It's not allowed here, as I recall. So I didn't. But if you want to debate, feel free to join up and chime in--your fellow shipmates are being slaughted, so they may need some help. :)
Vanceone
That is no way to treat members of your website. You don't like Corby? Kick him off! Otherwise, THE HELL? Do you think you're going to get MORE people willing to come engage in the debates this way? And have it NOT be somewhat trollish in intent?
Now go brush your teeth and don't forget to send thank you cards this Christmas.

| JKR in New York |
[04 Aug 2006|12:17pm] |
*Cross-posted from my LJ*
Here's a little lesson for people who want to know the difference between JKR's typical responses to questions.
1.) JKR just flat-out refusing to 'go there'.
On the second night in New York (the one I attended), somebody asked her to address (and this isn't verbatim) "one or two questions you've never been asked but should have been". She refused. After stating that there are a couple of things in the resolution to the series that she hopes to have made unguessable, and implying that she hasn't been asked about them specifically enough, she adopted a very rote style of speaking (the one I'm guessing she's always used when the answer is "I can't answer") and explained that she couldn't/wouldn't answer.
2.) JKR being cagey and directing attention away from the meat of a question.
She did this with both of the questions about whether Dumbledore is really dead. The first was when an 8 or 9-year-old boy also wanted to know if we'd see him 'in action' anymore and she spent very little time on that aspect (briefly saying, if I recall correctly, that book 7 would tell us). Instead she really focused on making sure it was clear that Dumbledore is Ever So Dead ("he is not doing a Gandalf")!
Later, when Salman Rushdie expressed his and his son's thoughts about the matter in relation to a 'staged the scene with Snape' theory, she wouldn't specifically address Snape even though he'd very emphatically asked "IS SNAPE GOOD OR BAD?" All she'd offered was "You're opinion is a good one" but we have no idea which opinion as he'd stated several in the course of outlining their ideas. But she seized on the opportunity to try to make us forget we'd been asked about Snape by a) teasing her fellow author about it not being fair for him to ask such a question since he'd be more skilled than many at unraveling complicated plots and b) instructing us that we really needed to get past our denial ... yadda yadda yadda.
3.) JKR acknowledging that a question is good and saying 'we'll see'.
There are smaller mysteries that will be solved in book 7. She didn't answer those questions now because, as she said at those book awards, just about everything is a spoiler now. Her answers to the Draco and Petunia questions were like this. She didn't make a production out of being secretive or try to redirect people's thoughts. In essence she said "you're on the right track and will get your answers."
4.) JKR having with fun with an element of the books that is supposed to be FUN.
Shipping. Guess what? SHE brought up Hermione's desire to be entwined with somebody. SHE brought up the "gang warfare" of the shipping debates. She teased because a) she is a tease and b) the love stuff (particularly the R/Hr stuff) is supposed to be amusing and c) the online obsessing over who ends up with whom is absurd (and something she apparently thinks involves mostly younger fans).
Now I don't know if JKR said "Get over it" (or "C'mon now", which ever it actually was) the first night to H/Hr shippers or to hecklers in the audience for being rude about them (although if we ever get good audio maybe it will be clear). But I do know that those people who don't want to believe it could have been the former and try to reject it because it would be 'rude' have not been paying attention. In the course of two nights she said basically the same exact thing to people clinging to hope that DD is alive and fangirls who romanticize Draco and Snape.

| When 'right' becomes 'easy' |
[29 May 2006|10:29pm] |
|
Even though I mostly compiled this set of links to prove the existence of them, I was accused of only caring because it was the character of Ginny Weasley that was being described in such terms. Even though I'm not sure that anybody needs proof that Cho, Lavender, and Hermione have also been called things like 'slut' (well, maybe not everybody knows about Hermione), I decided to seek it out anyway.
Here's what I did: I went back to all the same forums, and searched for the same epithets but in reference to those other three teenage females in the Harry Potter books. I spent approximately the same amout of time looking (an afternoon). I don't claim this to be anything remotely close to comprehensive.

In an effort to have links and quotes handy whenever a Ginny hater claims that nobody ever actually calls her a whore (or other unflattering synonym), I rounded up a few and included some visual aids. All images, quotes, and descriptions link to the source. This is by no means intended to be exhaustive, so feel free to submit any links you have in the comments. Also, at some boards I found some individuals who felt the need to use these monikers repeatedly; I've only quoted one comment from each in those cases.

Bold mine.
ETA: Made the first of what I fear may be several updates.
ETA2: Have said all I have to say, for now & of substance anyway, to estrella (not counting any rebuttals). Thank you for not debating her yourselves while I did my bit. Feel free to engage on your own now, if you wish.
ETA3: I have added the PORTKEY section and the last bullet to the HMSHF list. Since I have been accused of only caring about Ginny being called a slut, I have submitted a new sampling of quotes/links. Since I have been accused of just trying to make Harmonians look bad, I thought I'd point out a couple of admirable actions on the part of H/Hr shippers in regards to these quotes. Here is a comment discussing a Portkey link I contemplated putting in this section; I am quite pleased that modly action was taken in that instance. I was also happy to see this remark:
I am ill-at-ease with the "Ginny=slut so lets kill her" line of thinking as it is derogatory to women even if it is directed at a character I cannot stomach and the product of pure venting.

| Inaugural Post |
[11 May 2006|05:25pm] |
vanceone posts a lame, unfunny news parody/satire. It is served up at hp_cornfield on a shiny platter. estrella claims it's just trying to make a point about how the other side would have behaved (or will behave) just as badly if JKR wrote/writes H/Hr.
O'RLY*?
Then how come so many of us were willing to promise NOT TO DO SO and NONE of you were?
Can you find our versions of the many threads at Portkey dedicated to finding the most creative ways to be devasted if our ships don't sail?
Why did so many of us express confidence that if JKR decided to go with H/Hr we'd trust that she knew best what to do with her story and we'd do our best to like it?
I'm not saying we're perfect (far from it) or that there wouldn't be some emotional behavior (there certainly would be). But if you think I or most of my friends would do any of the things that have become HarmoAnian legend in the aftermath of HBP and the Interview then you are indeed even worse at making predictions than I ever thought!
ETA: And your belief that most F_Wers would be anything other than thrilled with a huge OBHWF splooge-a-thon just shows how much you do not understand what tickles their fancy.
*Do NOT take my link as an opportunity to rag on a friend of mine please :)
