de-friending explanation & amnesty [Aug. 27th, 2008|04:50 pm]
I am de-friending most of the Establishment journals, as I really can't participate any more (it's just not happening). Thanks to everyone for a great time! Feel free to defriend this journal as appropriate: I'm posting at http://msilverstar.insanejournal.com and http://msilverstar.livejournal.com, fandom stuff is all public.

Interesting survey on the economics of fandom.

Also, feelforfaith and I found 65 new stories and series chapters this last week, we listed them all in lotrips, as we do every week...

gacked from lineaelyn

far too much detail )

Question: what's the difference between Rock, Alternative, Alt-Rock, Alt-Punk and Classic Rock? Where do The Mountain Goats, Patti Smith, and The Decemberists go? For that matter, are the Beatles Pop or Classic Rock or something else? The Proclaimers? Elton John? If there are violins involved, does that make it Pop? Do drums and/or electric guitars signal Rock? I am so lost!

How about Electronica, Trance, Techno, House and Industrial?

What I'd like to do is use bigger categories here, as I don't really care about subtle distinctions, but I don't want to be so wrong as to make people go "huh?" (I do lots of subtle distinctions in Classical and World music categories).

mostly posting at IJ now [Sep. 2nd, 2007|05:27 pm]
I'm on a Mac and it's a bitch to cross-post, so I'm mostly posting just on my journal at InsaneJournal (and still LiveJournal). I'll be happy to friend people on either system. Recent entries: fandom/slashers moot, how to set feed (syndication) settings, Gogol Bordello concert reportlet, and one locked comprehensive whinge.

I'm a little nervous, but wearing my "Start Wearing Purple" t-shirt and we're off to SF to see Gogol Bordello at the Fillmore. We'd take teenboy but he's got school early tomorrow morning. So it's just us middle-aged types, and I hope it's more Gypsy and less Punk. I gotta find my earplugs.

[Current Mood |Dumped on]

perseph2hades has a post that nails the LJ debacle. Read that now, I'll wait.

more thinky thoughts (this is crossposted) )

Given that LJ has screwed this up, over and over, I wonder what else they're going to do? I'm slowly reducing my dependence on LJ, crossposting to IJ, GJ, and JF and reading in that order. I have a reading filter on LJ and will be commenting on other journal systems first. It's not much, but it's something I can and will do.

Happy Birthday [info]telesilla and azrhiaz ! (I know you didn't want wank for your birthday but you got it anyway.)
In happy fanfic news:

Establishment!Billy's story arc is finished: he started a vanilla straight bloke who had cheerful sex with any pretty woman he could pull, but was quite scandalized by Est!Dom/Elijah's kinky ways (but supportive!). Now he's married to Rachel Weisz (written by ripsgirl), who has broadened his horizons enough to have tried exhibitionism, erotic photography, bondage, fisting and anal sex. And now, they're going to experiment with something long-term and absorbing: parenthood. But we're not writing it -- domesticity is really hard -- so that's our ending to their story. Links are at the Billy/Rachel story list.

I love writing with ripsgirl and am glad we have push-pull-push to play in. We have a new story, in which Billy's tired but Dom's horny, and imaginative. Pretty much PWP with mild bondage, and an unusual configuration: Turnabout (NC-17)

my mind boggles [Aug. 6th, 2007|05:48 pm]
[Current Mood |GRRRRRR]
[Current Music |Twelve Gates to the City]

Brad Fitzpatrick (LJ's founder and original developer) is leaving LJ. Brad confirms this. Fans yearn for the good old days when he was in charge.

Then he posts that in 30 seconds, LJ management told Brad: it's all child porn and he believes them. (I have several screenshots of this).

I don't know whether to be relieved that they think they really are going after child porn (and are therefore sincere) or appalled that they can't tell the difference between child porn erotic art, (and are therefore stupid). Sincere but stupid is the kindest interpretation of all their actions.

meme: my crime is posting all that damn porn! )

ETA: LJ is sending out standardized email answers to people who sent them angry messages, saying there will be a post on the lj_biz community tonight.

LJ doesn't want us. Time to make other plans. [Aug. 3rd, 2007|09:05 pm]
[Current Mood |grumpy]
[Current Music |stuck outside of Lodi with those Memphis blues again]

I've come to believe that LJ doesn't want to deal with sexuality and those parts of fandom that are sexually explicit. They'd rather do sponsorship deals with Pepsi and Citibank. and sell the attention of their users. Anything that would scare off corporations is simply not worth it to them, despite all the financial support they've had from fandom over the years.

They don't want us any more. The only power we have is as consumers, the power to take our money elsewhere. It's time to start. I'm cross-posting everything from now on, and making new communities on other journals. I bought a permanent InsaneJournal account ($30, why not) and will be happy to make syndicated feeds from LJ journals and comms. I'm going to support fan efforts to make new systems of community and archives that we can never lose. This is why:
  • Despite all assurances that the Abuse Team would warn people of any problems with their content, and allow them to make changes, at least two fan artists have been summarily booted off of LJ. Their journals and scrapbooks are inaccessible, their posts everywhere are removed, not just for the offending journal, but for other journals with the same email contact address. This includes paid and permanent journals. And to add insult to injury, their names aren't even marked with a strike -- so [info]ponderosa121 and [info]elaboration just look... weird.

  • LJ user stormcloude got a response to her question about the rationale for deleting the journals. It comes down to a self-selected and anonymous group of LJ staffers and Abuse Team members making judgments about whether the artistic seriousness of the work outweighs the sexual nature. FOR THE LOSE.

  • As of now, I'm boycotting the term "suspended" -- if a journal is suddenly and permanently removed, that's "deleted by LJ". Suspended generally means a temporary thing.

  • Remember when I said they'd add a "report abuse" button to every post? They're doing it now. It's a link at the bottom next to "Be a Support Volunteer"

  • And while we're at it: paid users now get to see ads, if they're sponsored by corporations (Pepsi, wow) the form of moods or journal styles. And get this: they're animated, so if you're like me, you'll hate them intensely. Firefox tip: press the Escape key after the page loads and all animations will stop.

  • OMG, it goes on... LJ has warned a deleterious commentator (laughing at badfic, like Mystery Science Theater) that they must remove their post due to a copyright complaint. A HP fic author claimed copyright on her stuff was being violated (fair use, everyone!), and the only way the OP can deal with it is to file a counter-claim which will disclose their name and address.

  • mostly links )

One more reason not to depend on LJ [Jul. 24th, 2007|07:14 pm]
[Current Mood |annoyed]

Because it's sometimes not there.

SF has its power back, LJ is working on coming back up. I read somewhere they said that LiveJournal user emails are never shared, which is why Vox accounts got an email notification and LJ accounts didn't. Makes me wonder what they're doing with Vox accounts, and who they are selling my address to...

In any case, this is a good reason to migrate, at least partially. Which is why I'm crossposting!

eta: We should also be downloading Google Docs and other shared documents. And saving really vital emails on local disks, in case gmail or other web mail systems go down. Can't trust the Net further than you can throw it.

I'm not a huge fan of the series and I could see a lot of flaws, especially towards the end. But I like imperfection and there was a fair amount of that in the book, which was gratifying. Mainly, I'm just a fandom lemming and have much more fun when I know what you all are talking about!

It was a good vacation and I'm happy to be back, which is the best kind!

[info]billy_boyd was at the opening of the Edinburgh Festival, and is still doing some publicity for that. (ETA: I was wrong, he's not in New York, he's in Glasgow and London, pining for [info]rachelweisz.)

[info]miranda_o is still in London, working on a film about a thirties screen siren's adventures in WWII. She's missing [info]scott_speedman quite a lot.

[info]est_cumming is in London, starting rehersals for "Bent", but he'll be back in New York for some benefits later in the autumn.

Would love to write with new people, please let me know if you think we could get ours together.

fic links and fandom stuff [Jun. 10th, 2006|05:31 pm]
nienor__niniel and I wrote a three-part Christine Astin/Dom Monahghan piece of smut that makes me happy. It starts with UST but gets more explicit.

Fangirling is good for your health - [info]tvillingar's meditation on the sheer fun of fannish love, the pleasure we get in sharing it. She says:
Someone else's love for a character doesn't in any way diminish my love for the same character(s) but instead makes me want to hold hands with the said fellow fangirl and skip through a field of daisies... or something.
I found fandom at a time in my life when I needed things to squee about, and new people to squee with, and I'm very glad I did.

GIP o'David Tennant Lurve [Jan. 20th, 2006|12:07 am]
[info]jarofclay gave me the British "Casanova" for my birthday and I hacked my new DVD player so we could watch it -- fantastic! David is perfect: high energy, snarky, desperate, charming, sexy as hell and incredibly sweet. (A little embarrassing to watch with the teenboy but it makes me a cool mom so I'll live with it.)

This icon is from the Christmas Invasion episode of Dr. Who, where he's collapsed on the ground and trying not to laugh. *loffs*
