I'm not doing NaNoWrimo, but am doing WriSoMiFu (Write Something You Miserable Fuck). I've written <s>1663</s> 1403 words of what's going to be some very kinky character development for Billy in our Push-Pull-Push universe. Also going to be posting a new fic there tomorrow, finally

Charlize Theron went to the AFI tribute to Viggo this week. Shame her dress is so fugly. I thought the GoFug girls would hate it, and I was right. It's all pretty awful, but that hemline is all kinds of fail. via just_jared, I think.

There's a really good interview with Viggo on the CBC site for the show The Hour. He shows up about 28 minutes in, saying he drove from New York state and got stuck at the border: he's clearly a bit punchy and silly, makes Leafs jokes (Toronto hockey team) in the middle of describing The Road (very spoilery), and generally seems a bit sillier than normal.
Geocities sites will be gone soon

Geocities is closing down on the 26 October 2009, and they're going to just delete everything on it. So if anyone has a site there, be sure to save a copy on your local hard drive.

I think these parts of fandom history are worth saving! There are several ways to keep the content on the web:

Get an account on An Archive of our Own (where fandom owns the servers). It's the Geocities Rescue Project

Move to Yahoo Web Hosting ($5 per month for the first year). This at least gives some time.

Move to another free site

See if it's in the wayback machine in Internet Archive (they have lots of geocities saved)

Check with Archiveteam.org (a group of volunteers) which is saving all they can

Positive news, Tolkien estate settles 'Lord of the Rings' wrangle, so there's no legal shadow over The Hobbit film going ahead. It seemed like this was coming, but is good to see it happen.

Also, Guillermo Del Toro went onto the TORn forums, talking about the the episodic nature of the Hobbit as a story. He says,
Thorin & Co repeatedly go:

BANQUET-TRAPPED-FREED (Trolls, Goblins, Spider, Elves)
...
when studying for PANS LABYRINTH, I found out that the "predictable outcome" of these episodes is part of the charm of this particular form of tale. So, don’t be afraid, we are truly trying to preserve the charm of it- the whimsy of it
...
We need to make sure there are "long lines" emotionally (growth, friendship, etc) amongst Thorin & Co and dramatically (how episodes "build" upon each other ) that will make everything feel more fluid.

(there's more, all good.) This is very reassuring, and gives me hope that they'll get it right.

I have been making so many recs, I love reccing, I want all appropriate people to see the gorgeous fic! I also have about 800 recs at delicious.com/msilverstar, maybe you'll like some of those...

My main fandom is now and always will be Lotrips. But I've branched out a bit, and rec fic in lots of other fandoms (including ones like SGA that I don't even watch), because good stories are worth sharing.

So: my last 12 recs: lotrips, bandom, merlin, torchwood:

LOTR RPS: "Scrambled Eggs with a Side of Bacon" by lavitanuova (Billy/Dom)

http://lavitanuova.livejournal.com/71843.html

Set in 2009, a ficlet full of friendship that could be read as slash or gen. Full of telling phrases and snarky dialog, makes me happy. 752 words. "If you didn't want strange men to creep into your room and look at you, you wouldn't sleep naked."

Merlin in Firefly-verse: "Companion" AU by valderys (Arthur/Merlin) </p>

http://valderys.livejournal.com/51911.html

Arthur is a planetary governer's son and Merlin is a newly-graduated Companion (like Inara, only cheerfully awkward). Great Arthur stream-of-consciousness as he rises to the situation. Sweetly hot. 1,583 words

LOTR RPS: "The ABCs of Sean and Orlando" by giselleslash (Orlando/Sean Bean)

http://giselleslash.livejournal.com/tag/the+abcs+of+sean+and+orlando

Really good series, with Orlando and Sean's alternating thoughts on why they love each other, using the structure of the letters A to Z. The un-gooey kind of schmoop, really cheering to read.

Torchwood: "Performance Review" (Lisa/Ianto)

http://hope.dreamwidth.org/1537266.html?style=light

Backstory set at Torchwood One, just after Ianto has made it on to Lisa's team. She knows exactly how to keep his morale up, and he is very prepared to work under her leadership. Fantastic writing, lots of heat and intimacy, and a great Lisa inner voice. ~4,000 words.

Spoiler quote: (skip) "He sinks down immediately, looking surprised only for a very brief moment, as if he's not shocked at her command but the fact that he's automatically obeying it."

LOTR FPS: "Feasts, Feuds and Frolics" AU by alassenya (Merry/Pippin0

http://archiveofourown.org/works/5510?view_adult=true

Intimate and only slightly AU, young Pippin tries to lure Merry into bed, and when he finally does, the sex is explicit and almost too perfect. The language is hobbity enough, the various large parties and meals quite charming. Some nice female characters, especially in the beginning. Angsty secondary story about Frodo and cousin Berry. 74,048 words

LOTR RPS "Full Disclosure" by karri (Elijah/Dom)

http://community.livejournal.com/fellow_shippers/912055.html

Elijah inner-voice ficlet, written right after Collectormania 4 in 2003. It takes the discussions of tinhattery during the con to the logical extreme, with great dialog and lovely tension, though ending before anything beyond some snogging. 2,946 words.

Torchwood: "Shift" by iamshadow (gen)

http://shadowfiction.dreamwidth.org/45204.html?style=light

Post-COE somewhat of a fix-it fic. Author summary: "Exploring the ruins of the Hub after a Rift quake, Gwen finds something completely unexpected that could change everything."

Bandom RPS: "Just Maybe We Could Lose Ourselves This Time" by giddy_london (girl!Frank/Gerard)

http://giddy-london.livejournal.com/422541.html

AU in which Frankie has always been a girl, Mikey is her best friend, and Gerard Way is an art student living in his mom's basement. Frankie's voice is so tough and sympathetic at the same time, Gerard is tender and ardent, and the story is grittily realistically hot. ~4,600 words

LOTR RPS: (untitled mathom fic) by bagma (Sean Astin/Elijah)

http://bagma.livejournal.com/67744.html
Yum, good hot sex! I always like it when Elijah is as into Sean as vice-versa, and the sex toy was a great way to show it. The last line is a great twist on toppy!Sean</p>

LOTR RPS: "Equipoise" by blythely (Orlando/Billy)

http://byblythe.livejournal.com/15472.html

This. Wow. I missed it when it was first posted, but that means I get to rec it now. Orlando growing up and into control, not just sex, but power and bondage, and the promise of Billy challenging and luring at the same time, watching to see if Orlando can do it. QUOTE: "'If you were a girl, Billy, you'd be wet for me, wouldn't you?' and the lurching, dirty shock on Billy's face (tilt, thinks Orlando, tilt and tip) is just fucking exquisite." 5,780 words. AMAZING fic: if you like this kind of thing, I highly recommend.

Bandom Fic: "From Countess to Cabin Boy" AU by formerlydf (Brendon/Ryan/Spencer/Jon)

http://formerlydf.livejournal.com/156836.html

Fantastic fun Romance, as always-a-girl!Brendon runs away and finds a life of action and adventure on the high seas, as well as true love and really hot sex. Also includes the five Alexes, Gabe, Frank, Jamia, William, Greta, Butcher, and a zillion other band members. Funny as all hell, swordwaving lessons with gratuitous French, snarky byplay and Pirate Hijinkis!

Merlin BBC Fic: "Pastimes & Lifestyles" by netgirl_y2k (Gwen/Morgana)

http://netgirl-y2k.livejournal.com/323160.html?

A fabulous re-think of the BBC Merlin, wherein Morgana has the magic and saves everyone, instead of Merlin. She does it her own way, just perfectly, and gets together with Gwen along the way. How I wish they'd film it this way (it illustrates how easy it is to forget that nearly all shows are male-centric).

Alan Cumming, safer sex, pro-condom

Alan Cumming's made a wildly sex-positive anti-AIDS video Absent Abstinence

<site-embed>
<lj-embed id="1" />
</site-embed>

The Scotsman has a transcript and some more great quotes:

[Alan] introduces a former lover and states: "This is Matt. We had sex once and it was really great. Then Matt started going out with Heather and we all had sex together once which was really nice. We would have done it again but they split up."

He then recounts how Heather was linked to a number of other sexual partners including Jeremy.

Cumming states: "Jeremy went on a kind of binge, having sex with Tray, Kyle, Angela and me.

"I'd already had sex with Tray and we had a lovely threesome with Gail.

"Tray then had sex with Matt. Remember him?"

The video, entitled "Absent Abstinence", then grows more sombre and the 44-year-old states: "Why am I telling you all of this? Well, one of us is HIV positive. Aids will kill you, you have to wear a condom."

"Wearing a condom means that you are respecting yourself and your partner and making the world a better place."

The actor who made his US breakthrough playing Emcee in an award-winning revival of the musical Cabaret then takes a swipe at the former Bush administration's advice on how to cut down on STDs, saying: "Abstinence is a policy made up by the absent minded.

"Abstain? Make stains more like. Please wear a condom and shag away."

The Aberfeldy-born star said he was only too happy to support the campaign.

He said: "My friend Ned Stresen-Reuter and I were asked to make a film for the website Evolve One, Evolve All. We had a lot of fun putting it all together and what is better than to make something that is fun and puts a positive message out there into the world?"

Cumming, a guest star in the hit series Sex and the City, also revealed he was teaming up with an American chat show queen to create a follow-up video.

He said: "Ned and I are making a little film about a new condom called Testacy. The lovely Ricki Lake and I are going to be in a 1950s musical style eulogy to this marvellous new edition to the Trojan condom range."

Alan also wrote an article for Newsweek, What is a gay icon?, with some interesting thoughts on fabulous ladies and queer culture.

I'm looking for webcomic recommendations for my kidlet (she's now 9, she was 3 when I got sucked into fandom, wow). She has read and liked Get Medieval, Gunnerkrigg Court, and the Order of the Stick so far. She likes silliness, puns and adventures. Also, minimal angst and violence; and young sympathetic characters are always good. Thanks in advance from both of us!

PS I've been reccing a bit lately, Lotrips and otherwise, at delicious.com/msilverstar

The fail was back in November when a small majority of voters went against equal marriage rights.
I've been quiet about Mammothgate (Racefail 09 part deux), partly because it's so easy for me to understand the blindness going on there. I doubt I would have even noticed the assumptions, much less thought of speaking out against them. I just didn't see it either, completely missed the wrongness of handwavingly undoing the existence of all Native Americans for the sake of an interesting story.

Though I have learned that listening is a whole lot better than trying to justify oneself about things that matter like this. The author and defenders didn't think: would they have argued so much if it was a huge anachronism they missed, or a quote from someone 100 years later? Why not shut up and learn, and maybe say Oh shit, I screwed up.

Following a bunch of links I found a fabulous essay by a woman of color writing Science Fiction/Fantasy, Nalo Hopkinson: Looking for clues It's all good, articulate, emotional and inspiring. My favorite bit is this:

... by Samuel R. Delany, which comes from a speech he gave at the Studio Museum of Harlem: "We need visions of the future, and our people need them more than most."

Which is true and right and meaningful but she follows immediately with this:

And yet, that isn't really why I write science fiction and fantasy. It's more like the result, not the reason. Or like the air I'm breathing when I sit down to write.

I hope, very much, we can go on from there.

Dreamwidth invites - <s>I have a couple left</s> ETA none left evening of May 1st, but I should get more eventually. So, if you want them, please comment and I'll do what I can. There are already nifty new features (like comment preview, whee!) and bugs fixed daily: it's pretty exciting to be around.

The system got off to a good start in Open Beta yesterday, and it seems to be handling loads well, but it is still a beta, which means there will be bugs and we gotta report them.

A cleanup thing: If you've used an OpenID account at DWO, (example: msilverstar.livejournal.com) but don't want to any more, please don't delete it -- there's no way for anyone else to remove that ID from their circle. You can log in using your OpenId account, go to the Manage Circle page and unsubscribe & remove access from all other accounts, which solves most of the problems.

BTW, OpenID accounts can't create posts (which confused me at first), so there's no current reason for anyone to subscribe to those accounts. Feel free to subscribe to this account with OpenID accounts. All my fandom stuff is public, just my personal whining is locked.

And if you've changed names from other journals to DWO, please tell me! I was mystified by one until I saw that the location is Finland.

Happy May Day in any case!

(this is a repost of a cross-post because my first one failed. And yet I posted a story (or a link, or four extremely compelling pictures of my cat, including one where she almost had a ribbon on her head) and many of them have not commented! You may wonder why. You may even be downcast in your wonderment and confusion.

She has been doing some careful research on this very topic, and she has all the answers. WHAT a relief to have it put in perspective that way ;-) If you are a lurker, that's OK with me. But just so you know, even short comments on any of my posts are precious. I am always greedy for more.

Plus: GIP. That there my icon is me, in my Big Chair, all blurry but that disguises all my chins.
It's been really hot here. Way beyond my normal tolerance, as the temperatures are usually in the 70s F/ 20s C. Yesterday it was 91 F / 32.8 C! Today 89/ 31.6. I know that's normal summer for lots of people (even 10 miles inland or south), but we're wusses. Berkeley has eight to twelve really hot days a year, so we don't have air conditioning, even a swamp cooler, and our house just gets hot and stays hot. So please forgive me when I sound a bit addled and/or do not comment on something.

I'm checking out dreamwidth, and have msilverstar over (t)here. Not that I don't think about changing to a username that is slightly less hippy-fantasy and/or is easier to abbreviate (m? msil? just doesn't work), but, nahhh, I'll just keep it.

On DWO, you can subscribe to accounts via OpenID, and read, comment, see locked posts, etc. etc. But I won't sub back because those OpenID accounts can't post anything, so it bothers my sense of logic.

The thing I dislike most about the fracturing of journals is that comments are scattered and some conversations that might have happened just never connect. C'est la vie.

Also the Dreamwidth folks promise basic accounts with no ads, so I may well move some of my community accounts there. I hate knowing there are people coming to one of my journals and seeing banner ads, Not even google-type text ads, but big colorful flashing banners. This is is basic users, plus users, and anyone not logged in to LJ, -- paid logged-in users are supposed to never see the ads. So it's a shock to log out and see the junk everywhere.

I'll be cross-posting for the foreseeable future, I couldn't leave my peeps at LJ/JF/IJ! *clutches you all*

Amazon has just re-defined pretty much every book in their Gay and Lesbian section as "adult" and removed their "sales rank" and listings in the bestseller lists. As though their existence is too scary for children. I'm a mom, gay is just a word for some of our relatives: how dare Amazon try to make them disappear?

This is just wrong and stupid. One author of a non-explicit gay YA book, markprobst , got this explanation
In consideration of our entire customer base, we exclude "adult" material from appearing in some searches and best seller listas. Since these lists are generated using sales ranks, adult materials must also be excluded from that feature.
For more WTF? see the list of suppressed books, including Brokeback Mountain, Edmund White's A Boy's Own Story, Tipping the Velvet, Heather Has Two Mommies, and Challenging Homophoba: Teaching About Sexual Diversity.

Not affected: heterosexual novels including violent rape and/or explicit rape (Laurel Hamilton, etc.) And their featured blog of the day includes a trailer for the video game Terminator:Salvation (rated teen). So it's clearly not violence they're worried about.

What to do: use the word #amazonfail on Twitter and blogs, at the very least. Gosh, Amazon has some blogs with comments enabled. We could... comment.

(cross-posted, sorry)

For me, being Scottish and training at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama both define me and make me incredibly proud.

"I am honoured and delighted to be representing my country and spreading the message of the Academy at this year's Tartan Day Parade in New York City."

Culture Minister Mike Russell, who also took part in the parade, described Cumming as a "shining example of Scottish talent" and "a true success story of the RSAMD and a fitting president of their American Foundation".

He added: "The Tartan Day Parade is an impressive and touching sign of affinity from the City of New York for Scotland. I was honoured to be asked by the National New York Tartan Day Committee to represent the Scottish Government and lead the celebrations alongside the Presiding Officer and renowned actor and grand marshal Alan Cumming.

"The message today was one of Homecoming as we invited everyone here to visit Scotland and continue the celebrations through 2009. Working together through these difficult times is a real priority on both sides of the Atlantic."

As well as yesterday's parade in New York, events were held in a host of other cities, including Seattle, San Francisco, Houston, Chicago, Toronto and Vancouver.

Alan and Me photo exhibit at the Chashama gallery, my favorite one is the one involving a Alan in a swirling kilt!
