10:50 am - Doctors, painters and a stealth birthday
|
If I'd known what a headache the past couple of months were going to be, I'd wish for August back, except that I wouldn't have missed the elections for anything. It would've been a perfect evening but for the passage of Prop 8.
I spent September and October dealing with painters and taking my mom to see a specialist--her blood test showed a scarily high liver count. When her primary doctor told me that, my mind jumped to the worse case scenario, that her liver was failing or something. But Mr. Nite reassured me that if that were the case, she would've been hospitalized immediately. The 7AM MRI wasn't fun (I'm so not an early morning person), but luckily, she began to get better afterward. The doctors though, aren't quite sure what made her spike so high. And just as I thought things were calming down, my father-in-law fell. At the ER, we found out the poor man cracked two ribs. He's been in a lot of pain ever since. Fortunately, he made arrangements with Meals-on-Wheels, so we don't have to worry about him trying to feed himself.
So, with everything going on, I didn't feel like making a big deal about my birthday in September. Just getting through that month was enough. And still, some of you wonderful f-listers remembered. I received a lovely e-card from chaeysa and a phone call from garryowen.
But I want you all (if you haven't already) to check out lapetite_kiki's birthday manip of Jim and Blair, lazing together in a hammock! It's just what I needed. Oh how I miss summer...

11:00 am - I went to Wincon...
|
...and received a swag bag, complete with a little black flashlight, a black Wincon pen and a raffle ticket. Now, I never ever win anything at raffles, so I figure my luck must've come from sitting next to itsuki9 and snarkyducky at Friday's video/karaoke night where I won a couple of season one 8 x 10 color photos from Faith (one of my all-time favorite eps) and one of John and Sam facing off in Dead Man's Blood. \o/
While waiting for my shift at the registration table with annakiri, I got the chance to catch up with dolomir_k, whom I've known since my TS days. And she also introduced me to a fellow local, nebt_het.
Speaking of locals, I have to say naotalba did an awesome rendition of Ice Ice Baby on Friday night. *g* And on Saturday, I got to chat with two local writers I admire, esorlehcar and stele_3. Very cool ladies.
There were others I would've liked to approach, had I been braver, but maybe next time.
All in all, not a bad weekend.

1:37 pm - Operation Mop-Up
|
You know it's going to be a bad morning when the first thing you discover, after walking into the kitchen barefoot, are large puddles of water on the floor. My first thought was, oh no, the water heater's leaking. So, I followed the puddles to the back, looked up and immediately got a face full of spray...
...from a pin hole leak in one of the pipes that goes into the top of said water heater. It was merrily spraying water all over the entire back porch.
Since the shutoff valve refused to budge, I ran to the garage to get the biggest crescent wrench I could find, in the hopes that if I waved it at the valve, it'd be intimidated into loosening up. Yeah right. I finally gave up on the wrench because the more I tugged, the more I feared I'd break off the stupid valve. So I wound packing tape around the pipe, which kept the spray from hitting the walls (and my face), but didn't stop the water from dripping down.
Hubby manned the bucket and mop as I dragged all the waterlogged stuff out of the porch, fed the very disgruntled cat and called two plumbers.
As hubby disappeared off to work, I stood next to the water heater, sopping up all the dripping water with a hand towel, wringing it into a bucket every three minutes until the plumber finally arrived.
I've got the fan going and things are drying out. Unfortunately, the paint's already peeling off one of the inside window frames, which got soaked by the spray. But, as hubby pointed out, it could've been much, much worse. Luckily, I keep the birdseed in a covered metal can and our earthquake supplies in a plastic tub. The only other thing that got ruined is a cardboard box, which we don't really need. But, I'll have to get an estimate on replacing the old galvanized steel pipes with copper. AND a new shut-off valve. One that works the next time around.
Think I'll go out and get a Pinkberry frozen yogurt now. With blueberries on top.

3:25 pm - Going live...
|
Hello...
Thanks to luigi_suzuki (aka mos_self), I now have a journalfen account! And one without that pesky "x" in front of my name. LiveJournal will continue to be my main base of operations, but it never hurts to have a fallback position, just in case.
Feel free to friend me if you happen to see this. I'm still xnitelite over at LJ. Thanks!
